The tank is probably the easiest part of the job and gives you the most space. If I was to do it again I would still do it the same way I did in this video. Take your time and it’s really not that bad.

So after ruling out the starter relay it appears my 09 R1 needs a new starter. I read a comment here that the tank/throttle bodies don't need to be removed and the starter can be removed completely out the left side through where the coolant reservoir normally sits. Do you have an opinion on this? I don't want to give myself more work by trying to do it an easier way lol. I've been wrenching on this R1 for 6 months straight and I'm getting tired of it lol I do love this bike though
@JT2JZ

I know the feeling very well. I had a good year where I spent more time working on the bike than actually riding it. It makes no sense why this bike is still my favourite lol! It may be possible doing it that way but honestly the tank comes off relatively easy / quick and gives you more visibility / light and room to work with. If I were to do the job again I would likely still take the tank off. You could start with the coolant reservoir and take a quick look in at how tight it may be but I personally wouldn’t waist to much time fighting.

@@JT2JZ I agree man. Thank you for the reply. You've helped me in the past on here as well and I appreciate it. I'm mostly a ZX10R guy but I adopted this R1 into my family and I've got a soft spot for it. It's nice having two types of bikes one with a cross plane and one with a flat plane two different animals. These bikes have a sensor to kill the engine if the bike is dropped so that they do not keep running with no oil pressure. I would check that sensor and make sure the small component inside the sensor is not stuck and moves free from side to side.

Yea it’s a 2009 I had a feeling it was the starter since it’s pretty common. Can it also be the crankshaft position sensor because I’m getting a code 12? Or will it still try to turn over with a bad crankshaft position sensor instead of just making a single click sound?
@JT2JZ

What does the code 12 description say? My thoughts if you hear a click that’s the bike sending power through the relay trying to start still. Most Japanese applications (Bike and Cars alike) recommend NGK plugs, and NGK plugs happen to be some of the best plugs you can get. Arguably the single best for Japanese engines. Some people swear by their AC Delco or whatever here in American because of their old car (and old wives tales) but many fail to realize those were American engines, and often AC Delco is recommended.... Pop some Delcos in a Honda civic and watch it miss and spit and sputter. Slap some NGK in and then she purrs like a kitten.

Is ricks Motorsports starter good? My bike is still struggling. ( I haven’t fixed it yet lol, had surgery plus winter so didn’t care) I did antigravity battery, ricks starter, used oem fuel pump, valve adjustment, timing chain adjusted, fork seals and throttlebodies were replaced too (oem) injectors were cleaned and it’s still being a bitch. Will an oem new starter help? Or just waste of money? Sounds like you covered almost everything. I wouldn’t replace the starter again, that would likely be a wast of money. Check the starter relay under the seat. @ExtraSync does your bike have a lot of kms? Maybe a compression check might be a good idea just to make sure the engine isn’t getting tired. While you have the tank off I would ohm out the starter circuit end to end just to make sure there is no high resistance or anything the might affect that circuit. Other than that make sure the battery cca is 280cca at the minimum. These bikes are known to be harder starting even when working correctly so it doesn’t take much for them not to start unfortunately. I wish I had more insight for you.

@@JT2JZ ah okay. I have another question for you, does your r1 make a couple of clank noises when you FIRST start the bike up and then it goes away as soon as it starts? Mine does it and it’s coming from the clutch and my clutch is working fine. I’ve even had a buddy say his r1 did the same on the cold start. Just wanted to know what you thought cause you’ve dove into your r1 a lot more than I have
@JT2JZ
@JT2JZ 2 жыл бұрын
I think I know the noise you are talking about. Almost like a slight rotational noise and usually goes away after cold starts or if you pump the clutch a few times? Ya mine has a bit of noise from the clutch side as well when cold. I’ve never had the cover off, clutch is still working perfect for me as well so haven’t worried about it to much. My only advice would be just make sure no rattle is coming from the timing chain tensioner on the right side of the bike. Apparently those tensioners are a common failure item as well and usually make noise on cold starts when they are on the way out.
@TheAssassinMT07
@TheAssassinMT07 2 жыл бұрын
@@JT2JZ glad to know you hear it too lol but nah I don’t think it’s the tension chain cause the engine is running fine I think. I’m kinda having the same problems you were having. It’s having a hard time to start and all of that. BUT I will say that at the moment it’ll pop really bad at like 5000-5500 when it’s hot and I’m cruising or just when I hold the throttle there. I keep getting told it’s my spark plugs going out so I’m hoping that’ll fix it for me. I have a video of it but I can’t send it on here so hopefully you get what I’m saying lol. But if the plugs don’t fix it then I don’t know what else I could do. Maybe tune it but that’s pretty pricey for me right now 💀
@JT2JZ
@JT2JZ 2 жыл бұрын
ya I try not to listen to close to the raw engine noise on cold starts. These engines are kind of clunky / rattly down low at the best of times. Just listen to the exhaust and nothing else lol If it’s only popping on deceleration at 5000rpm that’s normal on these bikes with the factory emissions air pump and aftermarket exhausts. Mine does it at that rpm as well even with a tuner ( power commander 5 ). If it’s popping or missfire when you are on the throttle that’s definitely not a good thing.

You burn up the starter by cranking cranking it when the relay was your problem lol am I right or na
@JT2JZ
@JT2JZ 2 жыл бұрын
Hard to say. I think the starter was weak the entire time causing my issue. My starter ended up failing shortly after putting a massive lithium ion battery in the bike. I think the extra starting power finally caused the starter to completely fail.

Very likely. Starters are probably the most common issue with these bikes unfortunately. My new starter is still working great to this day even though it was a cheap replacement. I’m Very happy with it.

@JT2JZ
@JT2JZ 3 жыл бұрын
I was having a hard time finding any starters in stock. I ended up just getting a cheap one off of Amazon for now. It works but not sure how it will hold up In the long run. I spent under $100 so I don’t have a lot of faith in it to be honest. Time will tell. Unfortunately my riding season is over so will have to wait until next season to put some more hours on the bike.

Starters and cam chain tensioners are the weak point for sure on this Gen of r1. At least you can bump start it unlike most of my cars lol
@JT2JZ
@JT2JZ 2 жыл бұрын
Right. I learnt that the hard way. When my starter failed I was 1200kms from home. Not the most enjoyable ride home bomb starting it at every gas station! Cold bomb starts are tough too. Took me probably 4 attempts running as fast as I could for a cold start at roughly 8c ambient temp.

you aint bump starting a R1…
@JT2JZ
@JT2JZ 2 жыл бұрын
You definitely can when you are forced and have no other options. It takes everything you have running as fast as you can though. Not enjoyable at all! Flatplane r1s start a lot easier bomb starting. My Crossplane was a bi”ch especially with a rear tire that was cold and worn out. It just wanted to skid instead of rotate.

Ya prices from the Yamaha dealerships are ridiculous. The only thing I buy from them are my oil filters. I bought my starter on Amazon for under $100. Probably not the same quality as a genuine Yamaha starter but it’s doing it’s job so far.

Yamaha make some shit engineering decisions sometimes, no need to bury a service part under shit loads of pipework, Fzs1000 starter is virtually identical in design to the R1, but a 15min job to replace.

Definitely a problem. The local dealer was able to get Yamaha to cover it under "recall", so not a single penny was spent by me for this repair. This was like 4 years ago with my 2009 R1. Super surprised they were able to get Yamaha to cover a 9 year old bike (at the time) lol.
