Love from Scotland🏴🇬🇧
@Geralt_harvey3784 Жыл бұрын
To quickly explain a few things. for 2:20, the cape worn by the Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland are called feathered bonnets. They look like hair because they are actually made out of Ostrich feathers. They are mainly worn by drummers and pipers. For 4:44, the skirts are called kilts, and yes they are wearing stuff underneath (but in ancient times they wore nothing underneath 😉). The Kilt is a symbol of honor and pride in Scotland and it was used to identify which clan you belonged to (similar to a knights crest adorned on his shield). In Scotland, Kilts were favored over trousers because Scotland is known for its rainy weather and muddy terrain. Ancient forms of trousers would have been useless and did little to protect wearers from the cold and rain. Kilts allowed better freedom of movement and since they were made of wool, they acted as a good barrier against rain and mud. Additionally, during night time, the kilt could be unwrapped to be used as a blanket. Today, the tradition of wearing kilts has become a national symbol of Scotland. Note: Never call it a skirt, or else a Scottish man or woman will get angry at you or even strike you with their fist. For 9:56, The caps worn by the Queens Royal Guard (the soldiers in red) are made from black bear belts, specifically Canadian black bears. The caps can weigh between 4-8 pounds or 2-4 kilograms, which puts a lot of stress on the guards shoulders (This is why you never mess with the Queens guard since they literally have to carry around a 4-8 pound weight on their head). The caps are a symbol of the British victory over Napoleon during the battle of Waterloo in 1815. The French military under Napoleon wore these bearskin caps as a badge of status and to look more intimidating in battle. After the battle, the British captured these hats and adopted them to show that they had beaten the French. Today, the Queens Guard continue to wear bearskin caps in remembrance of that victory. To any Scotsman, Scotswoman, or Brit in the comments, I apologize if I got anything wrong and please feel free to comment on anything.

Kilts didn't appear until the end of the 16th Century, they would have worn trousers before that, hence the Scottish word trews.
@HarryFlashmanVC Жыл бұрын
@@RushfanUK yes.. and no. The modern Kilt, know as the philabeg or 'Small Kilt' was developed in the 17th C. This replaced the Great Kilt which is essentially a 25 yard wool cloth that is wound around the body and over the shoulder ( not unlike a toga) and secured with a belt and pin. As you say, developed in the 16th C as the Clan system became more formalised. However, the wearing of naturally waterproof woolen cloaks in this way goes back as far as you like. There's a bit of a debate about the etymology of the word, some claim it is derived from the Norse, others that it is a brittonic word and appears in both branches of that language, I.e. in both Welsh and Scots Gaelic. Who knows... given the cross culture between the peoples of Britain the norse who settled in the islands and North East, the word may have originated with any one of these people.
@HarryFlashmanVC Жыл бұрын
Guards: they are not known as the 'Royal Queen's (now King's) Guard in Britain. They may be named as such when carrying out a detail duty.. like Guarding the Queen. The Foot Guards comprise five Regiments in order of precedence: The Grenadier Guards, The Scots Guards, The Welsh Guards, The Irish Guards, The Coldstream Guards. In addition there are the two mounted Household Guards Regiments: The Life Guards and the Blues and Royals. And the Dragoon Guards (Toyal Armoured Corps) Of the The King's Dragoon Guards; The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Carabiners & Greys (you'll recall the Scots Greys from their charge at Waterloo)) and the Royal Dragoon Guards. These are the successor Regiments of the Household and Heavy Cavalry and in the 19th C formed the Union Brigade (Union meaning the Union of the nations of Britain and Ireland) Pipe bands; the Scots Guards, Irish Guards, and Royal Scots Dragoon Guards all have Pipe Bands. Now, as to the Guards marching here, I couldn't identify the regiment (its the spacing of the buttons and the colour of their cockade that shows this) but it's probably the Scots Guards, but sometimes Foot Guards are paraded by the Royal Scots Fragoon Guards Pipes and Drums. It's definitely a Guards Pipe Band because of the Red Doublets and the Tudor yellow dress uniform of the Drum Major. Contrary to some misconceptions, these are not ceremonial soldiers. They are all, including the bandsmen, front line soldiers who have ceremonial duties. Bandsmen usually double up as medics but Scots and Irish Infantry Regiments will frequently be led into battle, even these days, by the pipes.

Look up Fandabidozi's KZbin channel. He has several videos showing traditional Highland fighting skills using a staff or a sword. However, up until the the 1700s, when the Scots Highlanders went into battle, they actually shed their belted plaids (the "great kilt") and fought in a battle shirt called a lèine. It was a kind of padded tunic that came down to the knee. They also had leather jerkins. Reenactments won't give you a real sense of what these battles were like. Also, back in the Middle Ages, the Scots who defended their lands were dressed more like troops all over Europe. They were armed with a short Scottish bow, a targe (round shield), a sword and a knife. From the 17th century onwards they would also have had firearms.

The force of air in bagpipes is unique. They simply blow air into a bag that is under their arm. And they press the bag with their elbow causing air to be forced through a reed. So it doesn't take as much force with the mouth as it seems. That's why it's called a bagpipe. The Irish use a similar one in their traditional music called uilleann pipes. Literally meaning elbow pipe in Irish.

The shawl is part of the kilt (the skirt). It is all one large piece of cloth. It had many functions in the distant past when the Scottish people worked and travelled outside their homes. You can make a large bag hung across the body to carry essential things in (food, blanket, firewood, ropes etc). It can also be used to wrap around the body to keep you warm at night, or hung over a frame from tree branches to make a shelter. The big hats are made from the skin of a black bear with the fur on the outside and are a traditional style of hat for Scottish regiments.

Your looking at the best troops in the world, very brave soldiers who have gained the respect from every foe they've faced over hundreds of years of active military campaigns all over the world. Napoleon feared them as did the Germans in the first world war. I'm actually English and most of my family have served in the British armed forces, all great troops from across the UK but the Scots are for me anyway the most impressive. Big respect to all the lads up at blackwatch and every other serviceman in our armed forces who fight to keep this great nation and it's people safe 🇬🇧

This means nothing without context!!! They are wearing Kilts not skirts and NO UNDERWEAR!!!!! It's not a part of the uniform and they can be disciplined if caught wearing any!! It's to help toughen you up!! They are called Bagpipes and the men and women who play are Bagpipers and they do many different songs. Bagpipers were considered SACRED at one time from the OLD KEPPERS of Clan and out of Clan Knowledge they eventually became part of the military regiments. The different coloured Kilts were used to identify the different regiments on the field of battle.

It's great that the guys are enjoying the music. Bagpipes in England have a bad reputation going back centuries, most people here will say they don't like them at all. It's a cultural thing; we fought a lot of wars with Scotland down the ages. At one time, bagpipes were not considered a musical instrument, but a weapon of war.

Let your villagers know, (if its not been mentioned by now here), the acrual tradidion is that anyone, (espically a Scotsman), do not owear underwear under their kilts, (skirts). They are butt naked and open to the breeze as it were. lol Love the sound of the bagpipes which are not as easy to learn as other instraments. I am not sure about the bagpipe players headress but, Those kinds of head dress are made from animal skin and hair. Most often bear fur. I watched how the English Queen's ,(now King), guards bear skin hats were made. They are expensive and last for years and years.

@@alicemilne1444 well, I truly did not claim to know what their pipers hats were made of. I just knew what the English guards/horsemen etc. wore. I would bet those ostrich feathers were expensive to turn those bonnets into headwear. Regardless, they are attractive and it's nice to see the tradition carries on.

Who is this English Queen ( now King) ? 🤔 History and Geography teachers could make fortunes in USA by learning them the correct names of everything .

This must be so alien to them and it’s so funny seeing their opinion and the innocence. It’s very impressive to watch when you’re accustomed to the Scottish culture but it must be a real eye opener to these fellows😀

The 'device' (musical instrument) is the bagpipes and not the 'bagpiper'. The person who PLAYS the bagpipes can be called a 'bagpiper' or 'piper'.

I'm a German and absolutely love the sound of bagpipes and the drums. I've never been privileged enough to hear a bagpipe with my own ears though. I hope to hear them live before I die

I like the checks on the garrison caps, too. Pipers often play in the funeral processions of firefighters and police officers in the US. A lamentable, beautiful cry in a bid to say farewell to the loved. Take care, gentlemen, Best.

If you want to show them a different type of marching band, I suggest the Fightin Texas Aggie Band, specifically the four way cross formation. They are a precision military style drum and bugle corps. 400+ performers on the field, many more when they make the final T with the entire Corps of Cadets.

You might be interested in bushcraft videos. One man does it in the style of the Scot Highlander. The shawl is really a blanket, even a lean-to covering.

And even if there was a sound made behind the pipers and the drums, little chance of hearing it: bagpipes are really REALLY loud. And without proper microphones they easily overwhelm any recording device. If I am not mistaking, there are many different versions of bagpipes, among some that are more common in countries like Pakistan and India. Their sound is distinctly different from these types of bagpipes (hence the name "Scottish bagpipes"). They tend to also work different, the Uilean pipes (I am probably misspelling the name right now) for instance, are an Irish style of bagpipes that require so much air pressure that you can't get that from just lung-pressure alone: you blow air into the bag and compress it with your arm to push it through the fiddle-like part. There can also be bagpipes that do not have what are called drones (the low humming ground-tones of a Scottish bagpipe). A regular Scottish bagpipe already takes tremendous good lung health to play, let alone play it while walking for such extended periods of time (My dad played one for quite some time, and had to practice on holidays because of otherwise losing his lung-strength).

Cracks me up when he says they are wearing a frock.The Germans in WW1 were terrified of the Scots and Canadians wearing "dresses".They called them "devil ladies", when they heard the pipes their butt tightiened.😂

It would help them to understand what they watching if you explained about the history of these groups, Scottish clans, kilts, the bagpipes, roles played in the military, etc. IIRC, this march comes prior to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo (an amazing experience to behold live), which I'm sure they would also love to see. IIRC, there's a version of the bagpipe which is native to India, s perhaps that could be a cultural link for them, especially as they didn't realize that sound is produced both by the chanters and pressure on the bag. They might also like to see a KZbin video of three female pipers, one Indian, one American, and one Scottish playing the "Don't Stop Believing", but taped from their homelands. it's beautiful both musically and visually. I think the channel was the Snake Charmer.
