Being atheist doesn't mean not knowing about religion, it is more about deciding that one doesn't believe in what that religion dictates as truth. Also one can ethnically be from a certain religious group and still be atheist.

@@tubularap I agree. After this video, they really do need to see a thoughtful one from atheists. I was raised Catholic, briefly went to Catholic school, did CCD, and all that. In my early 20’s, I went to numerous churches of different denominations trying to find one that made sense to me. I ultimately decided to acknowledge what I think I was afraid to, and that was that I simply didn’t and couldn’t believe, and that was okay. It’s not that we don’t know about religion. Many of us know it intimately, and that’s precisely why we came to be where we are today. I practice TM twice a day, and those 20 minutes of quiet give me the inner-peace I think many look to religion to feel. I don’t begrudge anyone their own beliefs, so long as they don’t use it as a weapon, which sadly, it often is.

I won't deny the possibility of some higher being (or beings) existing, but if they do, they don't care about us and don't intefere. If most people don't believe in religions anymore, maybe that says something ABOUT religions. Most countries with a high percentage of religious people are places where education and knowledge is very low and poverty is high. Do these "religious" people have a choice if the religion they "believe in" is the only thing they have been exposed to as far as spirituality options go? What would they choose if they were better informed ?

Honestly for me, it is not a big deal. I believe that as long as people are respectful towards each other and treat each other with kindness, anyone can believe in anything they want. Alcohol tends to diminish that, also a lot of mind-numbing stuff these days. So yeah, taking care of yourself and others, nurturing yourself and seeking discomfort is taking care of yourself, aka being spiritual. Serotonin also plays a huge role in eating healthy, but alcohol stops the enzyme which produces serotonin in the gut via vegetables, so many people don't even know there are more heightened state. There's a hierarchy to everything, first it's you and your family, then your inner circle of friends, then the local community and your country, etc. You can't value all life equally, you can't be equally concerned about everyone, you only have so much time and energy. I don't value muslims as much as I value christians, because in Europe, I am free to be an atheist and not be bothered, in muslim world I wouldn't be free. So nobody can tell me I should value all human life equally, when much of that human life would gladly rid you of yours. Foolish woke people annoy me to no end. Not all beliefs deserve equal respect.

Old video, but I felt the need to comment still. I'm Norwegian, and old enough that we still got a somewhat religious school education, where they basically demanded to sing before eating etc, it was weird when thinking back on it... Our country however was converted to Christianity by force, vikings turned christian went to war to force religion on others, and basically started gathering Norway in under one kingdom, and it's why our holidays are somewhat weird, as they basically tried to shoehorn Jesus into Norse celebrations, like Christmas, celebrated on the 24th of December with a big feast, then exchanging gifts after dinner, the feast is remnants of old, as a celebration of the sun turning and the days starting to grow longer again, was celebrated by feasting with stored foods and beer. There's also Santa, in Norwegian called Nissen, a Nisse is an old Norse creature , a spirit of sorts that would guard a farmstead... IF you put out food for them around Jul celebrations (the Norwegian name for Christmas) and if you didn't they'd cause mischief and trouble for you, some think this is part of the inspiration for putting out food for Santa. (Also, their appearance is said to be one of several inspirations for the little garden gnome statues, along with various Celtic creatures as well.)

Just because one doesn't believe in a god, doesn't mean they don't believe in anything. To connect with the society around you, you need a compatible system of values. A religion, however, is not necessarily needed for that. It can help, though. Makes things easier. The video mentioned older religions several times, the Norse in particular. Would be interesting to see them learn about some of these "ancients religions" (also maybe ancient Greek or Egyptian) - and possibly something about the people who still follow them!

I was raised Catholic, so anything with a bureaucracy is out. My only practice is occasional prayer, and I don't make a big ritual out of it; I just have a little talk with Goddess or God, whomever seems right. Other than that I try to be good to others. Long ago I came up with the line, "I don't care if you believe the moon is made from green cheese and is god. Just don't try to make *me* believe it. You leave me alone, I'll leave you alone." Side note, one thing I've never understood that seems big in many religions are the questions, what is the meaning of life? Why am I here? For one thing, who cares? Why care? You're alive. Be thankful and live. Or not. Your choice.

Just because I consider myself an agnostic and don't believe in any of the various human created religions, doesn't mean I look down on people who believe in them. Education, becoming wealthy or communism are the main reasons for a high percentage of atheist. One major exception to this rule is the USA. The country with by far the highest GDP in the world, and yet a low(er) number of atheist than even other Anglo Saxon countries like Canada, UK and Ireland. One of the reasons I feel is the amount of immigrants in the USA that have fled religious persecution recently or even centuries ago. Immigrants tend to hold on to their religions more strongly and also remain more orthodox than the country they came from. An example I can give is our Turkish immigrants here in the Netherlands who are (in general) far more religious and especially orthodox than there family members in Turkey itself.

They say to learn about one religion is to be indoctrinated, to learn about many, inoculated. That's how I believe many atheists, like myself, have the lack of religion that we do. I think of each religion as a bubble which people are generally born and/or raised inside of. They talk about "God" rather than "a God", assuming everyone knows which God they are referring to, and they accept the claims of their particular religion as fact. When you are in a bubble like this, where your religion is the only religion, your God is only God, you essentially live day to day without your world view ever being challenged. Now think of every religion as a bubble like that, and everyone within these bubbles living in perfect, unchallenged assurance that their religion is the correct one and 100% true. They can't all be right of course. Now think of atheists as people living lives outside of these bubbles. We can see all of them, understand them, know what they claim about reality, familiarise ourselves with their mythology and customs... and as such, from the outside, we see each bubble as what they are; religions; organised sets of beliefs based on the folklore, oral and written traditions, and mythology of a particular region or people. So it's not that we don't know enough about religion; in most cases, it's that we know too much. What's more, we notice once free from it that we don't change as people. Moral people don't become immoral, reverent people don't become irreverent, nor do we lose any sense of wonder at the universe, in fact, many people say they have only gained such things. Since we do not believe a higher power is watching, we notice that the morally good actions we perform, or the bad ones we avoid, were not to win favour, or avoid punishment, but for the benefit of others' wellbeing. You might say, this is as such an innate morality, or in my submission, a truer, purer morality, untainted by personal interest. I could write about this all day, but what matters is that we all understand that there have been thousands of gods worshipped by humanity, hundreds that still are. A religious person, at least, a monotheistic one, discounts the existence of all of them but one. An atheist just goes one further. We are not so different really. And whatever you believe, if it makes you happy, keeps you humble, and doesn't intrude on anyone else's freedom, it's all good. ☺️

A God is not a necessary hypothesis. The theory of evolution shows that great complexity can arise from simple chemistry over billions of years. It would be interesting if those concepts were explained to them.

@@Seek1878 yes but it is quite another thing to understand that atoms were synthesized in old stars. Those atoms eventually formed the Earth bringing forth single cells through chemical processes. Those single cells regrouped to form multicellular beings that gradually evolved to become humans. In contrast, the step from common ancestor to human seems pretty obvious... The idea is that complexity does not require a deity.

The best way to understand the West and why it is the most atheist, and the West was not always atheist, but the best way to thin of it, Western society is an intellectual and scientific one, they would rather read of book of science than a book of signs. And they tend to be philosophical, most of the worlds ideologies and scientific achievements come from the West. It is of no disrespect to those who are religious, but more, a different way of thinking about things. EDIT: The reason for atheism in a alot of Eastern European countries, and Eastern Asian countries is because of communism, it was illegal to be religious then, communism replaced religion, communism was the religion, and when communism disappeared, the damage was done, it made most people atheist, and then upon gaining freedom they stayed atheist. As for China and Vietnam, they remained communist in name, however they have opened up much more and gave more freedom to their people, but the damage was done again. Love you guys! ❤

People can mock Christians all they want, but when a 2000 year old book predicts everything that is happening down to the exact thing, it says something. God's word does not lie. It's not about religion, it's about accepting Jesus' gift upon humanity for salvation.

No, the Bible doesn't predict anything. The people who wrote the Bible didn't know anything about our time. It only describes a very small part of the world, the one they knew about. It only "predicts" it if you have very biased glasses on and decides to _interpret_ things in the Bible to be about the things you want it to predict.
@Alifesalife

Lmao the bible doesnt “predict” anything it makes vague statements about the future that Christian’s then desperately try to fit on to current events just like they have been doing for the last 2000 years

That book you describe does not exist. If (and i assume you are) you are referring to the bible, any someone claims to have found an accurate prediction, it is with a very generous interpretation and rationalizations. Honestly, that works with most any old text.

Secular people are not ignorant of religion they're just not ignorant of realty. If you believe in your religion you essentially say that you don't believe in the other 500 religions in the world, secular people are just adding one more to that list. Also the most violent countries tend to the be the most religious and more people have been killed in the name of religion than any other cause, i dont think its really 'bringing people together' as much as its a region based tool to control the behaviour of populations and further divide.

Religion can help individuals cope with the unknown, but on a large scale it always results in problems. Just look at how many problems India and Pakistan are facing due to religious sectarianism. Or Israel and Palestine. Violence between those of different religions, and especially between different versions of the same religion! When two groups of people both believe that the "one true God" has promised them something, only suffering can result. Everyone around the world should put more emphasis on verifiable evidence, and science, because it forces us to rethink our deeply held beliefs, not defend them to the death.

Awesome ... so glad to see so many people becoming atheists. Most atheists would rather say they believe in humanity or nature or something like that. Many will even define themselves as "spiritual" (as in ... a quest for a peaceful spirit). All traditional religions are a construct of mankind and even if they have an important place for humans, they must at the very least be re-examined, modified and evolved.

They must be isolated not to know atheists, country names, and countries surrounded by water. I've lived in four countries, U.S., Germany, Philippines, and Turkey. The man on the left wants to fix it. I got a real kick from their reactions as the percentages rose. The middle guy blew me away with the notion that without religion countries would make war, when Muslims make ware between Muslims, Christians, and Jews. The young man on the right is most ignorant, he wished to remain ignorant of this knowledge outside his own country. Please tell them, the atheists don't hate them.

I am an atheist from Sweden. Many people are atheists here but there are also those who believe in "something" without being part of a religion. Also, I have met a lot of people who identify as Christian but only go to church once or twice a year. Sweden has a big Muslim population due to immigration but native Swedes are either atheists or Christians. When the narrator said "For a long time this whole part of the world was all into the Norse gods and all that stuff and then really didn't get into anything too big after that." I was like "WHAT??!!" Sweden was a very Christian country for hundreds of years so what on earth did he mean by that?...
