2:10 - What a thing, eh? to be so used to a certain language, be it our mother tongue or a foreign one we're very comfortable in, that we can barely conceive that some of its words could be so daunting to pronounce to those not (so) familiar with them. As a Spanish native speaker, I would hardly count _berenjena_ as a tough one to correctly pronounce, but then I guess a Pole might say just that about, say, _szczęście_ (= "luck" in Polish) and yet here I am, feeling I'm still somehow butchering that poor word's pronunciation for what must be the 400th time. 😁

I suppose I should explain myself - I am not really familiar with Spanish. Introductions sure but not much more than that. When I looked at the notes my first thought when seeing berenjena, was to say something like: bɛrɛnʒɛnɑ. But, if I recall correctly, the 'j' in a Spanish word is pronounced like an 'h' - like high in english. I got stuck there, couldn't figure out how to say it quick enough; so I backed out of saying it and went onto the next point!

@ChezStorytime Heh, heh, that's ok, sometimes it _is_ better to be safe than sorry. 😉 As for the pronunciation of 'j' in Spanish, it depends, of course, on the variety we're talking about, but what we might call the "standard" one would rather be [beɾenˈxena]. But I can see how [berenˈʒena] would seem much more logical to a native English speaker.
