I’ve been buying and selling for 40+ years and even owned an Antique Mall for several years and I am still learning about a lot of stuff! I am also a CPA. The definition of fair market value (FMV) is as follows: FMV is the price at which a willing seller and a willing buyer, neither of which is under duress, agree to in a transaction. Therefore. Virtually every buy you make and every sale you make are at FMV. Whether the buyer or the seller has any comparative level of knowledge has no bearing on whether or not a transaction occurs at FMV.

One thing to consider is that it costs about $1 per mile to drive somewhere (vehicle, maintenance, gas, insurance), and it adds up. I remember when my family went to garage sales, and we could go up to 100 miles. I had someone offer me $5 for an item on Poshmark, and the commission at the time was $2.95 so I would make $2 while driving 12 miles to the post office. Then there’s the packing materials. Yes, it adds up, and I’m just trying to clear out an estate and pay my bills.

In this day and age we have the ability to look items up….seller and buyer. Don’t chastise someone for finding an item at a good price when the seller could have done their do diligence to find the value also. I’m with you 100%!

Been reselling forever, bought a 23 inch slag glass vase for 10 bucks and thought I got a deal based on my former experiences. Found out the market was not there and I would be lucky to get 20. So now I just have a lovely vase. You are an honest moral man, doubt these critics could say the same.

I could NEVER do videos like you do!! My skin is way thinner than yours. I could not handle the keyboard warriors that you have to deal with.. We did a garage sale recently and after someone paid 5 dollars for an old sewing machine.. he goes this is worth xxx money I don't remember what he said.. but it was a lot. I was like GOOD.. I'm glad you found a GEM. I wanted stuff gone and it was just one more thing gone.. I'm a reseller.. but I don't have the time to deal with things I don't want to deal with... if that makes sense. I made the price and that is on ME... not on the BUYER!! PLEASE don't let these people that probably don't even resell make you feel any type of way, your a good person and STAND FIRM in that knowledge!

Just a thought: aren’t Walmart, Costco, Target, etc. all resellers? The difference between them and folks like Kevin is that they are at the top of the food chain! I appreciate the online resellers like Kevin and the opportunity to purchase affordable items along with the thrill of the hunt for them! You keep doing you, Kevin!

Yes they are but they are called "Authorized Resellers" and that makes a BIG DIFFERENCE as they're margins of profit are nothing like what cottage sellers get, not even close. They also consign goods under NET Terms which again is a completely different ballgame. When you know the larger picture of hard goods manufacture, distribution and consumer commerce the two pretty much cannot be compared. There is far more dissimilar than similar and it's one of the reasons why "Retail Arbitrage," sellers who source at retailers is under assault. Walmart for example is not in the business of making independent or other sellers money. In fact, if Walmart sent employee's to Target Stores to buy with intent to resell for profit like cottage sellers do its against the law, its construed as a predatory business conduct and then some. Those cottage sellers activities have resulted in two matters pending: 1. The big players in retailers as well as well as distributorships, manufacturers AND even many Authorized Small Business sellers are seeking in the USA to have retail brick and mortar law applied to all US Internet Hard Goods Sales, new or used, doesnt matter. Those entities are also using the fact that they online have blurred internet and retail to the point of retail law being needed in Internet Sales. If retail law is applied to all Internet hard goods sales most sellers are out of business... They simply cant meet those standards more or less want expend the time to learn them. 2. The Shop Safe Act is looming sitting stalled in Congressional review. Whilst it aims to impact counterfeit goods the reality is it will impact just heaps of sellers whether they've counterfeit items or not be they new or used. Lawfirms representing the brands will make claims as is their right to do so and its completely up to the seller to prove legitimacy of any item made claim upon. How is a seller to do that? The manufacturers have no onus to provide a mechanism of proof authenticity and if purchased say at a retailer like Target that can open the seller up to a Predatory Business Conduct legal action via a State Attorney General, its up to a judge to determine legitimacy as those retailers consider the "Retail Arbitrage Seller" a competitor no matter where the resell said merchandise. Its up to the seller to try defend that against a State Attorney General and best of luck on that to be sure.

Spending way to much time worried about what some random person over the internet thinks. If you went to Walmart and bought something on clearance for $1.00 and were able to sell it for $100.00 would it make this any different? Do what you know is right and keep your head high. In the end there is only one judgement that matters.

Kevin, you are an honest, caring, and wonderful person and you work so hard just to make a living for your family. Do not take what those people said to heart. It was very nice of you to give $5 each for the vases when you did not have to. I agree with the FMV idea. If the buyer and seller agree on a price, then that is what the item is worth. I have an accounting degree, so I know what it costs to do business. As far as Goodwill is concerned, I would also like to add that they are hurting the people who are poor and the elderly who are on fixed incomes by charging so much now. It used to be they could rely on Goodwill to clothe their families, but not so much now. For the poor who live in states with colder weather, it is even worse because there are no garage sales for many months of the year, so they cannot even do that, unless they buy all summer to cover winter, and who knows if the clothes will fit their children all winter? How can one guess what exact size your child will wear several months ahead or whether they will experience a growth spurt or not? I know this because I was once a single mother of 5 for many years. Anyhow, shake it off! Those people are mistaken.

I remember the comment the seller made about the vases, She said they are all Avon. She truly wanted them gone and didn’t care… She was happy to get the money you gave her. I also have no doubt she would’ve been happy to get the 1 dollar too. I’m honestly not sure I would’ve offered her more. The best part about hunting for treasures is getting a deal. I’m not a reseller, I’m a glass collector, I’ve honestly never paid market value for glass. I was excited and happy for you, when you got those pieces. I still don’t know all the different glass makers or what they are worth. I recently bought an LE Smith bittersweet fat bottom vase for $10 Canadian at an estate sale. I had no clue of the true value, until I got home and did the research. We can’t all know everything. I don’t think you did anything wrong, if anything it was nice of you to give her more. I think 90% of people wouldn’t have offered her more. 🤷‍♀️

I wish I had the energy and commitment of resellers. I know that the expense of gas, cleaning, pricing materials, storage etc. cuts into all profits. I also am not organized enough to keep up with the price paid, price sold inventory which is so necessary for successful shipping of sold items. People just do not factor all of this in. Think of how much profit a store like Belk must make on items when they are able to offer 75% or 90% off and still profit! Keep learning and reselling. Forget about those who are not willing to put the work in and yet will criticize those who are.

The driving and time are definitely huge costs that people don't consider when sourcing. Yes, sourcing is fun and it barely feels like a job most of the time, but at the end of the day you are tired and have to drive home (or even pay for a hotel if you are far away from home). This weekend I drove over 140 miles in one day, stopping many times along the way and that took 8 hours. I barely bought anything because the sales were picked over. But for $20 in gas and 8 hours of my time, the $200 of profit (before expenses) I expect is almost not worth it. And I skipped lunch to save money.

Kevin, I'm glad you called out these 'keyboard commando' reselling experts. It's easy to critisize watching and seeing you buy things. Even people who know a lot don't know everything. You can know a little about a lot or a lot about a little. Half the fun of this is learning new things. This debate for second hand items sales has been around forever. I'm proud to be a reseller, recycling what was old to be reused again!

People are so concerned with other’s actions that they forgot to look in their own boat. We all fall short whether justified or not. There is no need to get on a high horse and pretend like we can do no wrong. People are clueless. I just tune them out. Especially the ones who say that we're ripping people off who don't know the value of their items. If someone is asking a specific price for something and I pay them the asking price, how am I doing wrong? Am I responsible to inform every person of the value of their items? Absolutely not. Most people don't care anyway, they just want stuff gone. Furthermore, the point of reselling is to buy low and sell high. Anyone who owns any type of store understands this. It's called business as usual. Get over yourselves people.

I ran a small catalog for 7 years, the reason these people are so vile is they’re miserable.. they had a bad day, a bad month, a bad life.. and they can hide faceless behind the screen. It was the same when it was a voice on the phone they could abuse. Our little company didn’t follow “the customer is always right” and my operators didn’t have to put up with it. If they were suddenly talking to me they were no longer a customer. Block these negative people. The best way to stop them is to let them dangle without recognition, it’s what they crave.. let them twist.

hi kevin - love your videos while I'm packing my ebay items! You don't need to justify yourself to anyone!! I always say the value I bring to buying your items is cash now, so you don;t have to list, ship, deal with ebay, deal with non payments, sunk cost etc. The one piece of advice I would give you would be when you make a big profit on an item maybe don't say what you paid. I'm sure resellers get a kick out of it but viewers who don't know what resellers go through may be turned off. Also you will never make everyone happy, someone will always complain about something. take care! Bruce

I've been working for 4-5 months on my eBay business, just recently started to make money. Had a few weeks of 700-800 take home and my friends all think that its easy money. They think they can do it by going to the flea market once or twice. I have 70+ receipts from thift stores and about 60 face book market place deals in that time, probably 20 trips to flea markets. People do not, and will never understand. Time to let it go.

If you have a KZbin channel you are fair game for criticism. Criticism can help you improve. It’s not a feelings game, it’s about business. As a customer, I don’t like seeing how much someone made off of me. I understand the game, but hate seeing someone gloat about selling me an item for $88 and only spending $1. If I didn’t know the profit margin it would make it more palatable. As for KZbin resellers, some are for entertainment and some are educational. They also don't understand that a good percentage of items we buy thinking we can turn a profit will either never sell or sell at a loss/break even. It would be awesome if 100% of the items we pick sold for a profit, but that simply isn't the case. Every seller I know have a death pile or have to do a purge of dead stock just to clear up space.

My question to these Wendy Whiners is.. who call you out…“ what do you think Kevin should’ve paid for the vases since you’re so easy with HIS MONEY???” Smh The entire reason, picking is so fun is to get those great deals for low prices that sell high. I mean, what are these people think you just go out and are doing people a favor by picking up things for the price they could pick them up somewhere else??? 🤯 We love what you do, Kevin and learn a lot from watching your videos. Good educational video for non-resellers. eBay prices are not profit and selling in a short term local garage sale will always be less than selling on a global market when you can sit and wait for the right buyer. (Which requires the cost of storage even if that is your home.) time vs money. Keep doing your honest work to support your family!

This is why I love Mike, Death Pile Picker. When some are worried about their online image and how their audience percieves them, he doubles down on being a cheap skate, tight wad, low balling reseller 😂 I'm sure some of these commenters are squirming and fuming watching him and I'm here for it 😂. At the end of the day, the seller has every right to sell or not sell their item for a given price, end of story.

Why should buyers pay more than asking price Sellers should do their homework. Most people just want to get rid of things quick at garage sales I source online. It would be hilarious if every time I saw a deal, I would send the seller an offer higher than their posted online asking price No one does that

Why is it up to you to do your research and make sure that you aren’t paying “enough” for an item? If the seller prices the item to sell doesn’t it make sense that they paid for the item initially so they have some idea what it is worth? Let the buyer beware as well as the seller! I have my niches as well. I don't claim to be an expert in anything other than sneakers and hats. Out of that I do struggle a bit and do my research. I also learn from watching videos. I am a full time reseller and have been since Ebay's existence. I like to dabble in other things to fill my store up. I have gone to yard sales and know the value and have given people more money for items depending on the item. Even when I garbage pick I have gone up to the door and given them money since I know that the item was going to fetch me a few hundred. It's my conscious, but all in all if it is in walmart for a $1 I'm not going haggle and pay the dollar. It's the same thing! If they want to get rid of it, then that is what they want.

Now that I'm listing more, I'm living it. I think Goodwill is just making a huge mistake pricing things at eBay and even higher than Walmart prices sometimes. I'd love to see what has happened to their revenues since they started doing that. They just are not going to sell as much by taking the THRIFT out of THRIFT SHOP. I know I certainly don't buy as much at Goodwill as I would because there just isn't any meat left on the bone at their price. I often only buy once it goes to half or 75% off. Finally one more thing that I'm wondering about--whether there could be a way to set up something for e-recycling things like those VCRs you dispose of that don't work. I have several electronic items that I'm thinking of selling for parts, but I'm also a scrapper. Many items have good copper, aluminum and/or brass in them AS WELL AS circuit boards, chips and gold plated connector pins that are worth really good money to scrappers. It might be worth paying shipping cost for a pallet of this kind of thing, but it would not be worth the shipping cost for onesy-twosies.

@@barbarabeard6017yeah, I had to charge $150 for shipping on a commodore bundle that included the keyboard, vintage Apple monitor and disk drive unit. It was a massive box that was around $45-$50 lbs. My comment about that sale was on Kevin’s video a couple weeks back about the high shipping costs causing complaints from customers, and I get it! He didn’t read the full comment and just replied, “$150 to ship a commodore?” Which makes me look bad and unethical as a reseller on his large platform. I called him out and he didn’t respond or apologize for not reading and judging. So tbh, I’ve see Kev do the same exact thing he’s complaining about in this video.

@@barbarabeard6017 but, I will say. The guy running the usps was appointed in 2016 I believe. He was asked to step down in 2020 and refused. I’m sure you’ll be able to find his interview with Brian Tyler Cohen. He specifically mentions how one candidate completely forgets about the resellers on eBay, the Etsy sellers and how the other candidate has a plan to boost them.

If they are TRUE resellers and they happen upon a deal don't even think they will do exactly as you did, and more than likely they would of only paid a buck! I paid 50 cents once for an item I made 250 dollars from. Do I feel guilty?? Heck to the no! I have sold on EBay, marketplace, in a booth, at the flea, and many yard sales of my own. I know what I have but at a yard sale it's about being rid of it!! Usually at the end of my yard sale..you see a free sign! It's about making a living, extra money, and making the business make sense. Stop giving him crap..I ain't going to Walmart and give them more then their asking price, are you? My husband and I watch your channel religiously. We are both past corporate executives, who left our big paying jobs and "semi-retired" in 2014. We started reselling. My husband started with storage auctions in Las Vegas, he even filmed with the show Storage Wars. We will still do storage auctions, however most of our merchandise comes from garage / yard sales, estate sales, private buys, etc. The point here is, while we know quite a bit about the cost of so many items, we equally do not know the cost of so many other items. I, like you, am not well versed with glass. There is so much glass out there. I do my best to scan the item(s), just like so many others do; when I do not know the value. But here is the thing, to your point Kevin, there is so much more involved in buying / reselling. The cost of gas, our time, wear and tear on our vehicles. Then there is the sourcing, cleaning, fixing a damaged item, photos, listing, possible returns, eBay fees, shipping fees, taxes. So for any so called "re-seller" to question your authenticity / honesty is absolutely out of line. And I will go as far to say, they are not seasoned re-sellers, and most likely are not making a living off of it. There is an art to reselling, and only a handful of people are successful at it. If a seller wants to sell an item for $5.00, which is potentially worth $1000, then great for me! The seller got what they wanted. It is not my job to educate these sellers. I work very hard sourcing and researching. If they want more money, they should do the work in researching prices, particularly at a garage / yard sale where most people are just looking to purge their "junk". Don't let the naysayers, and haters get to you, it's so not worth it! Keep on doing what you're doing. We enjoy your channel, as do so many others. God Bless You and Your Family.

Don't people out there, (commenters), know that no one knows everything and just looking at your shop, we know that glass is not your specialty, neither is pottery and fine china. We all have those things that we know just enough about to know that something might be good, and we learn every day. You are starting to learn a little more about glass. I applaud you for wanting to learn more about it. My mother used to say, "if you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all". Here is a hint when shipping glass. Try to stuff the insides...I use wadded up newspaper. My post office saves their unused advertising papers, or shoppers for me. I also turn over the ends of my tape when I tape bubble wrap onto a piece. That way, it removes easily without tearing the bubblewrap, and the buyer can reuse it.

Hey, those people who complain aren't handing out more money than asking price for anything. They don't go to the grocery store and pay full price for a sale item. They don't hand over an extra twenty at the gas station. The fact of the matter is that ANY of these people holding yardsales COULD have looked up the value of these items. They could have taken the time to research their belongings before marking it a dollar to get rid of it. It is NOT your fault that they don't educate themselves. Furthermore, I have often at yardsales told the sellers that their product had value and they could resell on Ebay for far more than they were asking. Not once has one of those people decided to keep the items. They have always said that they don't want to bother with Ebay. So Kathleen can shut it. Her opinion is based on envy and a lack of knowledge. You don't have to justify yourself to anyone. BTW--I'm an Ebay reseller (FootlooseFinds) and was out of power for 8 LOOOONG days but thankfully was barely inconvenienced unlike many who lost everything and those who lost their lives.

There's a big picture Kevin and this is what most a youTuber is never going to understand and most sellers dont. Nobody be they a teacher, mechanic or cottage seller want be accused of much anything more or less fabrications. I hear people these days constantly complain how Auto Shops are raping people with the high cost of skilled labor yet those folks have no clue as to whats happened, that being skilled labor is so unavailable that the costing has skyrocketed. One can make more as a Plumber than a software engineer, no problem. The average person has ALWAYS looked at Flea Market Vendors as sort of "Snake Oil Salesman" as they barter and put value on varied items that the consumer does not see as fair. Just playing Devil's advocate per se why should a consumer need know how a car dealership or Walmart operate from point of acquisition to end sale yet most certainly they complain about said entities. As Devil's advocate again how many sellers inform yard sale proprietors of they're intentions of buying with intent of resale for profit or even in retail arbitrage which is arguably a anti-competitive and predatory business conduct legally. The latter would be pursued if the retailers could legally pin down those sellers online, they are working to do just that now by placing devices within certain products so as if manufacturer support is warranted, the manufacturers can acquire data. As you know Kevin as a Teacher of History and a smart fella there are always many viewpoints on statements made and as we can see via our National political scene how very daft many or perhaps even most folks are towards history more or less how government works or doesn't. We've a nation whereby people think CEO's, CMO's, CFO's don't work hard yet couldn't fill their shoes if they tried for a single week, perhaps even a day. Thus I put forward to you Kevin that the problem is not necessarily your commenters psyche but that of much of the nation, Western world, more? We live in a land whereby every citizen seems want be judge, jury and executioner of anything they care purvey whether knowing anything in depth about a given subject matter or not and its becoming this nations clear undoing. The more immediate problem for cottage sellers is the regulatory measures that stand looming over this profession and its the attitudes and ACTIONS on all sides of the fence that are driving it. Bad sellers rip off good consumers, bad consumers rip off good sellers, meanwhile for years on end the FTC and FBI been fielding complaints measuring the billions atop billions of dollars consumers claim be taken for and reality is those numbers are likely far smaller than the true realities. Manufacturers, distributorships and retailers have very real grievances that are very very valid from supply chain, contracts, consumer gouging, product availability right down to the cashier Walmart pays, the card processing fee's to service consumers or water bill for the flush of the toilet. None of that is there towards me going in and buying things so I can resell them for money in my own pocket. It'd be interesting to see what say Target or Walmart endure in actual expense for the consignment, freighting, labor and fee's associated with all retail arbitrage across their entire network of stores. I bet it's a number we'd all go SERIOUSLY? Wow! That might be a drop in the bucket of a Walmart Corporations revenues but *IF* it were EBAY doing that to sellers well, it'd be fireworks and is! Me well I've done all of it... I claim no stance of "Holier than thou." I've bought at yard sales and never said a word about intent to resell for profit. I've shopped in retail arbitrage albeit not as a staple source of goods with resale for profit. Church sales I always give more than what is asked if I intend to resell what I might buy. But I've also done authorized chain, authorized reseller and I understand the very real impacts and grievances of those particular parties. You dont strike me as a fella with narrow vision Kevin yet most cottage sellers have VERY VERY VERY narrow tunnel vision.

Hey! This is a great video. I want to bring goodwill in to the conversation. Everyone is mad at goodwill for raising their prices, but these same points can be made for them. Such as rent and cost of everything to run that store. Their non profit mission is to employ people, not to sell cheap stuff. When you go to the racks, you're paying for organization, go to the bins if you want it cheaper. Kevin, love your videos. I do want to point out that Goodwill lobbied Congress to allow them to pay less than minimum wage to disabled people. Note that it includes ANY disability, so people who are good workers, but have a disability are paid a pittance, and yet Goodwill is building palatial buildings to sell the leftover junk that’s not good enough for their online store. I’m so proud of resellers who can stay one step ahead of Goodwill and still find awesome deals there, but it’s getting harder and harder.
@RenaissanceMary
@RenaissanceMary 2 сағат бұрын
@@rhoward295 That does suck that people with disabilities get paid less. But look at it like this. 501c3's have to follow IRS guidelines and are closely tied to the government through grants and collaborations. Goodwill already gets so much money from the government that they use to train people for employment. So many big companies do the same shit. I don't like it, but it's how it is. I worked in commercial cleaning for over a decade. Do you really think that commercial cleaning crews are legal citizens who earn a fair wage? No, they're mostly illegal, the few employees actually on staff make very little, and they bring their families to do the work because there is literally too much to do in the allotted time, and they are desperate to keep their jobs. Goodwill is in the commercial cleaning business as well, I used to bid against them for buildings all the time. Because they are such a large corporation, their janitorial staff is actually legal and they tend to bid higher because of this. So yeah I agree with you that it's a shitty situation for people with disabilities. But overall, goodwill is a giant 501c3, closely partnered with the government. If it looks like a pig, then it is a pig. Go dig through the bins if you want cheap stuff from goodwill. Anyone out there reading this who wants a job, and doesn't know where to start. Go to your goodwill corporate office, ask for job training and placement. It's free and accessible to anyone. It is NOT perfect. But I appreciate the safety net And DO NOT step into a commercially cleaned building if you are concerned with underpaid staff so much that you cannot support it.
@RenaissanceMary
@RenaissanceMary 2 сағат бұрын
Another thing about how goodwill gets their stuff for free. When I worked for an estate sale company, we had the most trouble clearing out the house after the sale. Goodwill was the most reliable. They come and get everything, it's great. So here's a pro tip to anyone who got this far in my comments. Start doing this at garage and estate sales, offer the clear out all of their unwanted stufff after the sale. Offering to take it ALL is important because the value you are offering is removing the large unwanted things. This is often a big job and will require 2 people with a truck, I've even rented a U-Haul. Donate what you don't want, goodwill or otherwise, keep what you do. Great way to get lots of free inventory.
