I may not speak spanish but I know the word for brother and when I heard her say hermano I realized right away that there was no little boy with them which means he was either in danger or missing. Just knowing a couple words in another language can make a huge difference and when you don't understand giving them reprimands might cost someone's life.

Sarah, you have a point. Most cities have people of diverse backgrounds and languages, learning a new language would benefit all first responders and the people they are serving in times of emergency. In this case, Joe Cruz was there to communicate with the mother and the Crew were able to find the boy, despite Gorsch's incompetence. No Joe Cruz or anyone to speak a second language, it's a very different and tragic outcome. Your department make not have a person who speaks Spanish, Italian, Arabic, or one of the many hundreds of dialects in the world. That lack of communication can mean the difference between life and death.

You are right. Because Cruz was fluent in both English and Spanish he was able to communicate with the family and was therefore able to tell his fellow firefighters about the missing child which helped them quickly get to the child and then get him out of the building both of which likely saved Mateos life. If it wasn’t for Cruz Mateo would have probably died.

Alarms sound differemt in fifferent country's, plus not all systems have a voice over of even a voice over in different languages. The kid likly didnt know it was the fore alarm and the system euther didnt have a voice over or not one on spanish to explain what wss happening. Thats part of the danger of going to anouther country on vacation.

It’s super important to know a language such as Spanish, especially if you’re surrounded or live in a Hispanic community. I remember at my old job there were a lot of people who are Hispanic( I think from El Salvador) and bc I’m Mexican and can speak some Spanish, I was called to help out multiple customers. Everything turned out good and they all got what they needed.

But what would've happened if the firefighters found someone who is deaf while getting people to evacuate a building on fire, such as a hotel? Unless one of them is good in sign language, t may be difficult to communicate with that person.

Maybe you can't learn multiple entire languages, but anyone on a search and rescue/emergency response team should know at least the "help me" and identification (age, appearance, etc) in a variety of languages. Especially in as culturally/linguistically diverse a country as the US.
