Communication Etiquette: How to Handle Phone Calls, Instagram & Emails | Jamila Musayeva | In this video, I will share with you the most important etiquette rules for proper communication over the phone, via email and direct messages on Instagram. Given that in today's world, most of our communication happens online, it is important to understand the ground rules when it comes to communication via online mediums of communication. This is especially important for people and businesses that deal with clients online rather than in person. When you know the etiquette of communication, you are already one step ahead of others in your business.

Have you ever found yourself in an uncomfortable situation when it comes to communication etiquette? And if so, what types of it do you notice most frequently?

I feel very uncomfortable when I'm on call with someone and they turn on speaker without asking for permission

I feel uncomfortable when the person I’m on a phone call with is speaking outrageously loud and I feel rude to tell them to turn it down a bit. Also, when the other person does not get the hint that the phone call has been dragged out too long and it’s time to hang up 😂

I feel uncomfortable when people send me voice notes when I'm not home. They know I'm probably in class, or in a public place that time, but they still do it. I listen and answer these messages later, on my own comfort. Some people get angry at me for this, which I can't understand. Most of these voice messages are basic greetings, which can be messaged as text

Once, I spelled someone's name incorrectly because it was an unusual spelling/pronunciation for my country, like "Jemylla" and not "Jamila." It was my fault. She didn't correct me but instead spelled my name incorrectly in return, like "Daychember Klouds." I apologized several times and I copied her name to make sure I spelled it correctly, but she continued to address me again and again incorrectly. I felt so bad. I really wish she would have said something like "I'm Jemylla, not Jamila."

I just really admire the whole point of your channel. As we are developing , technologically and materilistically , instead of valuing good manners and polite behaviour peole are becoming vindictive on social media . I feel particularly bad about celebrities in this regard. In all this chaos your voice is a soothing breeze , reassuring that there are people who value good manners.

Give people a week to respond. Sent on a Tuesday then follow up on the following Tuesday. People are busy. If there is a deadline, always add that “please let me know by Friday, June 4th.” If they don’t meet the deadline follow up with the same email thanking them for allowing you to contact them and polite message. Never burn bridges.

Very informative video. I live in the Middle East, and most of my family and friends live in the US. When it's morning for me and evening for them, they often want to talk over the phone without realizing it's early morning for me and I have my own routine and things to do, just like they do. I don't know how to nicely tell them to be mindful of the time difference, but most of the time they already know. It can be frustrating.

Dear Jamila Musayeva, I hope you are doing well. I love your videos and your approach to etiquette is beautiful. I am truly grateful for everything I have learned from your platforms. I have a video request - How to deal with someone breaching your boundaries on social media or other forms of communication. How to politely decline unwanted voice messages, people sharing your number or email without permission, unscheduled calls, posts on social media that you are tagged in that you never approved, etc. When is it okay to block, ignore, or politely address the situation? I wish you loads of love and blessings. Thank you.

Scammers do that kinds of things (background noise voicemails) specially! They use it to produce the sensation of "look, we are a busy beehive of a company!". Beware of them. Overall useful advices! Thank you very much! On "you vs thou" issue - some companies in the exUSSR space sadly picked up the "youthful You" style which isn't much used in Russian business language and now I see very disrespectful job offers. In addition those companies often have red flags of black companies (haha) and almost never specify the salary.

Hi Jamila, thank you for this video. I have a video request related to this topic: "how to set healthy boundaries while keeping our elegance and not appearing rude" Of course it might not please everyone when you remind them your boundaries and choices, but sometimes I don't know how to tell people who have been in my life for long, that I don't appreciate something they say or do

Jamila , I really enjoy your content. I was wondering if you might take a request for a topic. How does one handle turning down things or people politely. How to refuse? How to perhaps reject business offers without burning bridges? How to turn down social events etc? Or how to reject something we are offered like a drink. In my culture even if you intend to accept something you must refuse twice before you accept it. And so saying no takes time and has to be done carefully and it can also result in the host asking constantly through the evening if you want the offer as they feel you are being polite, if you have ideas it would be great. And how to politely reject dates with gentlemen and romantic proposals for want of a better phrase. How do we reject things while being firm and yet not burning a bridge or disrespecting the other person? Thank you. ❤

Dear Jamila, Thank you for putting together a great content. I have two questions regarding this topic: 1. What are the etiquettes with regards to tagging a person on social media? I do get into difficult situations when I meet a large no. of people in conferences and other formal meetings where people are taking a lot of pictures/group pictures to be posted online. 2. What are the etiquettes with regards to using social media in informal gathering such as large dinner parties? I see that some people get bored in informal gatherings or get cornered out, resorting to casual social media browsing while the event hasn't quite ended yet. Thanks, Chethan

Im not Jamila however 1. If you are tagging a person on social media you should always ask them before hand. 2. You should make sure you greet everyone first especially saying hello to the host of the party and the people you might sit with at the table. Once you have greeted everyone I believe you can go on your phone.

Your videos are great, thank you. I have a question about communication étiquette: when you receave a vocal note, a message, an e-mail, a text message and you would like to respond to it, what would be the correct time ? Do you apply the rule of 48 hours or a different rule ?

Never send voice msg without their permission with new person When msging someone girst, introduce yourself first. Don't send voice msg with distracting aound in background. Not call someone without taking permission before. Let person know how much your call will take Email in case of some professional collaboration Inatagram dms are not for business communications. Create your email well. Make your msg clear, brief, comprehended. Knowing how much and how often to follow up (after next 24hrs and then few days after usually)

About this voice notes it doesn’t make any sense people call you without even knowing you or giving heads up and that’s even more intimate than sending a voice note so I don’t think you need a permission. It’s building a distance between people where we should be getting closer to each other since social media Are keeping people not as connected, even though it might seem like it
