When the US says "we can't let that be sustained," they don't mean we need to improve our research and development, it means we need to subvert the competitor's. If China can develop their own ASML-like EUV technology, everybody wins. The world sees progress. The crooks who control our government only want to hinder humanity's development. Without these creatures crippling the world and waging war on humanity for the last several generations, we could literally be living in a utopia.

China is also not one of those jungle countries that recently stepped foot into the modern world. China led the world in wealth and tech in various periods throughout the past thousands of years and overcame hardships worse than twenty-first century people can imagine. This is a threat because it means that the biggest market for American and allied advanced chips will potentially no longer buy them. Combine this with RISC-V and it gets worse. Right now the US needs China to keep making things. They need China to buy lots and lots of low end chips. But later it may be possible to cut them off. And if they can't get chips they are out of the game. SMIC 7nm is a high end process now, but someday it will not be. This represents China securing a future that the US cannot easily interfere with. You wanna see America lose its shit, wait for China to build its low end semiconductor capacity, to really take some chunks out of those imports.

That is what the US has done in the past half century, invests in wars. The politicians took huge chunks of tax money, and dumped trillions into wars around the world. The rich people profit by pocketing that tax money thrown into the war machine. Meanwhile, US infrastructure, like in NYC, are 100 years old and rarely updated. The gov are cutting social programs left and right, and education takes a backseat with underpaid teachers due to a "lack of money". Resulting in a new generation of dumb people that can't compete on the world stage and blames other countries for their misfortune, because it's what the gov told them. And it's easy for dumb people to say "bomb them to hell" of other countries. So the war cycle continues.

Anyone who has followed SMIC and the industry knew they could make a chip like this, with DUV, not EUV. They could probably have done it a year ago. But are they making a profit on it? I guess we will know if this keeps happening. As for R&D, well we got government weak enough if not small enough to drown it in a bathtub. Corporations do not do basic research, as a general rule (IBM, NEC, Xerox, and Bell Labs have dabbled). And corporations do not do research likely to be unprofitable, like China's chipmaking in the medium term. Corporations only engage in research which that particular corporation is likely to profit from. So for the stuff so broad that there is no telling who will win (like the discovery of new drugs for instance) they rely on government. And bone crushingly expensive development like China's semiconductor catch up cannot be accomplished with the waste that doing it competitively would entail. Coordination and investment are required, and only governments really ever do this. This is (one of) China's Apollo program(s). I wonder if the US still has the actual material wealth and cachet to accomplish anything on this level nowadays.

China don't want to be like USA, fair play for all foreign investors, if they don't break the law, didn't harbor ill motives like micron, China prefers win-win partnership

Keeping Apple as a competitor makes the Chinese companies competitively innovative, effectively efficient, more reliable and more superb performance. Do you want to compete with the top best or among the mediocre?😂

As a white South African i want my country's relationship to improve not only with China but other countries that have been a victim of sanctions and other false accusations of human rights, it's not human rights, never has been. The United Nations is used as a Greenlight for emperialism of all sorts, disband it to bring peace, prosperity and co-operation.

Acording to chinese news insiders, Huawei will offer Mate 60 pro+ , Mate 60 Ultra with much advanced chips. More to this reality, 3nm is costly to sell , let ask the untouchable cost with qualcom. 5-7 nm are sweet spot for 1000usd phone. Do you want to pay 2000usd phone for 1% better speed.
