Exactly! Community is an ode to pop culture in the very best way, and there’s so many things that elevate it. For one thing, a meta autistic character with a special interest in tv? Taking a background pop that tons of successful movies and shows have been using for decades, and sponsoring it? Making adds for let’s potato chips was so genius, it’s not only a fake brand, it’s a tv prop, something that only exists on screen, I don’t need to explain the layers to this but it’s one of my favorite community facts.

At the end of Season 3, Chang says something like "fires cant go through doors, they're not ghosts" and then halfway through the next season when Pierce locked himself in his safe room he says to the group "ghosts can't go through doors, they're not fire." Bits like these are just next level for sitcoms. Community goated

the show is so well written that they could mention a small detail once in the first season and it would come back in the 5th or 6th. Like Pierce's hyper-virile sperm, he mentions that he has hyper-virile sperm in season 1 episode 2 and the only other time I think it is referenced again is when everyone is given his sperm again in the polygraph episode in season 5. or the 'return of the ass crack bandit' after he had already once terrorised the school in s2 (mentioned in s2 in one line).

i love that quote from dan. “they’re allowed to have seen the movies you’ve seen.” and now that i’ve heard that, he’s completely right - it does feel like shows often pick and choose what other media exists in their version of reality. shows often make their characters so blatantly unaware of something that is so famously similar in pop culture that it’s annoying, or the “joke” (if you can call it that) is the reference itself and everyone else not getting it. and that’s a big part of why community is so special - because abed exists, both as a character in himself and as a fellow audience member, and points out what any average person would say about their current situation if it even tangentially resembled a pop culture moment. all of the characters call out the references at points, because all human social behavior is heavily impacted by society’s collective knowledge and how we wield it; how we shape ourselves in its image, or in the contrary of its image, or slightly to the left of its image. how we move through life is all a reference to what we have learned and experienced, and media is a HUGE part of that. average creators think of their work as wholly unique, but the best creators recognize and credit their influences, using that reference as a jumping off point for something new. TLDR; great video, great editing. bless dan harmon and the fact that, as the dean would say, the shape of his brain is a little fucked up.

I just discovered a potential reference I believe. In "Ladders" from S601 when the Ladder professor falls on Annie and she comes out in stretcher and tells Jeff "It was worth it." It's extremely similar to a scene in "Cheaper by the Dozen" when the dad falls on the neighbors kid and causes a very similar injury and it also cuts away right after to the kid being transported in a stretcher and he said "It was my best birthday ever coach". Not the same line but the similarity is a lot.

I love the way this is edited- the way the music from one scene becomes the background music for the video, and the way the clips are grouped to fit the mood of the song. I especially love how, in the Tears in Rain clip, the music is cut-off in a sort of record-scratch gag when Garret says "...What?", and then it uses the break in the music to go straight to the Patton/Chang scene with the bugle and all.

Everytime I watch this video, it is an transcendental experience. It simultaneously highlights how awesomely referential Community was (we all knew it when we saw those scenes even if we didn't know the exact references), how it is realistic to real life as Dan says (we reference awesome movie and TV scenes in real life with our friends), and last but not least how fan involvement and efforts such as this highlights great scenes and easter eggs from movies and TV, improving the enjoyment for other fans.
