Addendum: It has come to my attention that in this video I have mislabeled Autism as a mental disability when that is not the case. I did not mean any offense or insult in doing so, I was simply ignorant of something I should have done more research on before talking about it in that way. Not to mention that I certainly didn't think about the implications of what I was labeling it as when I should have. I am deeply sorry to anyone who may have been offended or insulted by this in any way and thank you to commenter "pure laziness" for making me aware of my mistake.
Community is one of my absolute favorite shows of all time. It's funny, unique, poignant, and oddly beautiful. But how does it do all those things? Why does it do all those things? Whether you've loved Community since it first began or have never heard of it in your entire life, this is what makes Community great.
Please make sure to share, like, comment, and subscribe if you want to see me ramble about other things.

I mean, it really is homage, not parody. The way they present these episodes you don't have to take them seriously and yet they still create the intended emotion of the genre they are emulating. Sometimes I feel like Shirley's character is kinda underappreciated. She was actually a character that differentiates the group from other school groups films. Without her the group is just s bunch of young college students (or no commitments adult), but Shirley had a family and her purse, she reminded you about that weird old woman who's trying to fit in. (And Pierce too I suppose, but he already had enough attention) I'm glad the writer still gave a thought for Shirley's story, about her religion obsession, her divorced, ambiguous mistery pregnancy, her control freak rivalry with Jeff, her fixed marriage. When Troy leaves to sail, she said "Thank you for having a lame house wife mom in your group." is when I realized she too feel insecure feeling so different and less fun and young from the rest of the group. Kinda sad when Yvette Nicole Brown is stopped appearing at the opening sequence on Season 6.

While obviously it's the case that Community doesn't really have the "straight man" character, I think I'd argue that the closest to that is Abed much more so than Jeff. Jeff Winger I'd say is probably the most normal LOOKING character (and relax I do NOT mean because he's white), but so much of what his makeup is about, especially earlier on, is manipulating others for his own ends. Yes, you get a lot out of Abed as a character and there's plenty of fantastic weirdness to him, but at the same time a lot of what he's about is reacting to and processing everything external of him. In a broad way that's a fairly key element to the straight man concept. Plus, recall that at the end of the Halloween episode centering around Britta's clandestine psychological tests on the rest of the group, Abed's revealed by the test's metrics to be the only "normal" one.
@nikomiller
@nikomiller 4 жыл бұрын
The closest Community got to a "straight man" was Frankie, (who was a queer woman, intentional?) that was introduced in the very last season in order to bring closer the stabilization and slow "going back to realism of early season 1" of season 6. Her character and her growth proved that Greendale doesn't need to be kept in check, but that going on for too long and becoming too crazy isn't healthy either (as well as the whole concept of familiarity and staleness the entire season was about). But that was the point, the closest we got to a straight man character, didn't appear until the very last season, and even then she got a bit zany and grew as a person.

They established the "silly but meaningful", "absurd but heartbreaking" tone really, really early. S1E3 Introduction to Film, where Britta pays for Abed to take a filmmaking class, and he makes a movie that communicates to his father how he feels about his mother leaving. You actually get that a.) his father cares deeply for him but might feel like he's a burden, b.) Abed understands people and how they work, but doesn't know how to relate to them. He manipulates Jeff and Britta really easily to get them to fill roles in his movie, and it was all to express something to his father that he's never been able to before, that he feels like his father blames him for his mother leaving. It's early in the series, so the characters aren't fully fleshed out yet and the relationships are still forming, but it's so prescient for the stories that follow it.

I remember not really paying much attention to that episode, so his film just came off as random, and with the dads reaction I was like oh, they're just doing the cliche, "solve the family problem thing but dont bother with the details", we're just told it's emotional. And no.. his video is not random, and you can totally see exactly what he's saying to him. I recently watched that episode again and paid closer attention and was surprised how, idk.. not funny it was being. He's conveying a very serious thing to his father, and he's someone who doesn't communicate well, and they dont play it for laughs, they just let it be what it is. There's a genuinely sweet moment between a father and son that can be completely overlooked.

That line - "At Greendale, you're already accepted" - is the perfect summation of what makes Community so great. It works as a joke about the Colllege's incredibly low standards and is fine and funny as just that; but then it also contains within it the shows deeper, more serious message about life and the people you meet in it. Community doesn't need to interpolate scenes of seriousness amongst the comedy - it manages to make so much work on multiple levels simultaneously. I'm quite certain we'll never see its like again.

abed is such a unique character he's the best example of an autistic character i can give. When non autistics think of writing an autistic character think they're writing the autism spokesperson they don't realize we're all different. When I as a an autistic look at Abed, I'm not him we act differently we show different symptoms but there's a few things he does that make me go "hey i do that" Dan Harmon perfectly captures how autistics interact, relating to the smallest things that seem so big to us like when Abed can't read the clock in the law & order episode or when he says he hates when they chew gum. Dan Harmon realizes he has written a character with autism and not the character with autism. This is very obvious in season 4 because the new guys don't know this.... and Abed feels off because this is like someone's who kinda heard of autism from a friend but doesn't have it so they're trying to convey an idea they don't know or understand

They also give really great examples of people who are friends with and love a neurodivergent/autistic person. They don't always get how he thinks or why he acts how he does, but they love him, so they just try their best to accommodate his needs. Just like they would for any of their friends. In contrast, Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory is the butt of so many jokes. He's a caricature of neurodivergence, he's inflexible, and everyone rolls their eyes at his need for structure. It's night and day.

The Ending is of coummity is one of my favourite endings to a show ever, Not everyone gets a perfect ending like jeff and they have to accept that, Most shows try to have a sad ending because a charecters leaving or quitting their job etc, Even though their married to their love interest and have a perfect job (Just a example) Jeff and britta to a extent dont get what they want and they both have to live with that which is ultimately the message the ending is trying to convey.

@marikmeier5605 4 жыл бұрын
While I agree with your points I'd also like to add that they didn't get 'their ending' yet. I think an additional part of the massage is that they are getting there at their own speed and even though the version of 'their ending' may change in the meantime it will always be possible to reach in some capacity. It's never too late or hopeless unless you create it that way.

The best part about the ending is that it _wasn't_ an ending. It didn't tie off the story with a neat little bow, it showed us that even for these characters, life goes on. They still have so much ahead of them, and sometimes they aren't where they want to be yet. Jeff's finally learning to live with still being at Greendale but pining for Annie, Britta's still bartending while she pursues her psych degree, Abed's leaving for LA but starting a whole new chapter of his life, Annie's furthering her goals in forensics with her FBI internship but still leaving the door open for a future with Jeff.

My favorite part of Geothermal Escapism is when Britta catches up to Troy and Abed in the basement, intent on forcing them to cope (her way). But when Troy tells her that the lava is real to Abed, she immediately backs off and is just concerned for her friend. It's like flicking a switch.

Yes. I watched the whole show in 14 days and my brother started watching it when I was getting close to season 5. Of course I decided to watch some of season 1 with him, and was surprised to see how much younger the entire cast looked, most notably , Alison Brie. It’s so weird how a full grown adult can age so much in just four years. It’s almost surreal to think that she was 27-32 throughout the course of the show because she seemed to age just like someone Annie’s age would have, looking like a mature 25 year old woman by the end of the series, rather than the innocent, naive teenaged girl Annie was in the first episode. And, yes... Alison Brie is really hot.

I really put community above office and parks&rec because you’ll find other shows like those two but you won’t easily find something like community... Troy and Abed reminded me of my best childhood friends who will do all kinds of stupid childish goofy shit together; and I don’t think I found another show resonated with me more than that.

Maybe, but I'm glad both exist. I can always go back and watch not one, but two amazing shows. I just discovered Community thanks to Netflix. I'm kicking myself for not discovering in the day. I watched the office concurrently and so it holds a very strong nostalgic factor for me that community never will. That said I think Community is better. But it's not as important as being happy to have both amazing shows to revisit when I need them both for different reasons.

After watching your video on Brooklyn 99 and then this one, I was quite annoyed that KZbin wasn't suggesting your videos to watch next. I checked your channel and realized that you only had a handful of subscribers and just a few videos! Wow, the overall quality of everything in your videos gives off the impression that you've been doing this for a while already! I just wanted to let you know that you're doing everything right, and it's only a matter of time before your channel blows up. I'm definitely a fan and a new subscriber.

I just finish the show today, and I finished it in like a week. This show means so much to me now then any show could. Yeah I liked other shows, but this one feels diffrent. It's the writing, directing, the acting, but most importantly the characters that keeped me watching the show. This show is so amazing, the community for this show is amazing. I hope we get a movie cause I feel like the world at this point needs a movie. #6SeasonsAndAMovie

Ikr, despite anyone’s opinions on how Jeff and Annie should have ended up I think most people can tell how much they love each other and you start to fall in love with them yourself. It’s written in a way that you can empathize with every character including Pierce and you start understanding their emotions so well that you almost become them.

@@flarlix9347 For real. I've never been as invested in a relationship between characters as I was with Jeff and Annie. Their chemistry is what made me keep clicking "Next Episode" one after another until I had finished the entire series. Their goodbye kiss nearly makes me cry every single time.

See, the only times I didn't like the show was during Intro to Felt Surrogacy and during a good majority of season 6. I really hated the newer characters because they didn't have any of the charm of who they were trying to fill in. Duncan was awful, Hickey wasn't really that interesting until he and Abed shared the moment about Hickey's drawings, I never even remembered the black guy's name (though he had a few funny moments like during Garret's wedding), and I've never really liked Chang (he has his fans, but I don't like his humor or his personality). Frankie is about the only character I tolerated, but mostly because she was funny at times and actually interacted in positive ways with the rest of the cast. Her one on one talks with Abed, Britta, and Annie were very touching and made her very likeable. And Dean Pelton was fine as always, but a lack of Troy and Shirley severely brought the show down

@@dfgccgggff7963 I'll agree they did the best with what they had left, and Garrett's wedding and the VR menu episodes are hilarious, and the series finale is one of the best episodes of the series. But a good majority of the season is just insufferable. Especially that RV episode and the leaked email episode (which felt like they were trying to recreate Intro to Felt Surrogacy)

Now we just need the movie! Great essay though, I always have a hard time picking between Parks and Rec, and Community as my favorite comedy. Both get me for different things, but they both share one thing... super strong characters. I think both shows experienced the perfect casting for the characters, and took those characters to their limits.

I love both shows too, but I connect more with Community. Its just so wonderful to see the representation of a group of oddballs from a demographic/location/status to what we usually get. And the strength of the characters and actors allows for/grounds all the absurdity. I cried when Abed let go and fell in to the lava, it was beautiful and genuine. So many shows seem to be built around jokes, while P&R and Community are built around people. (sorry I feel like I'm kinda regurgitating the video now! 😳)

When I found Community in the early months of 2013 I was at my absolute lowest point I'd ever been - basically every single part of my life was in shambles, I had no idea how to get out and I didn't have any friends. Then I found the 3 seasons that existed then of this wonderful show and it really changed my life, as I think it has for many other people. It gave me a chance to, alone in my room spaced out on god knows what, open up emotionally and genuinely care about people, even if they were fictional, in a safe and rewarding setting, that gave as you put it so well, flawed and broken people like I was at the time the feeling that they were good as they were, that they were worth something and 'already accepted'. After binging the show and crying a ton during it I really felt like I could maybe try again, to do something, make something of my life and open up to other people. This is such a wonderful show in so many ways and I would've been a worse person without it.

So glad you said this. I thought I was crazy for getting so attached to a sitcom lol Their friendship is soo pure and they really accept each others faults and help each other grow. I think even after they go their separate ways in season 6, they still love and care ab each other. Thus why they have to reunite for a movie!!!! Lol
