It feels like this video was written by someone who just watched community for the first time cause they were instructed to make a video about community. In many ways community is more genius than Rick and Morty but this video seems like just a little superficial exploration of R&Ms less popular cousin. I think that exploring certain episodes in individual videos would be a much better approach. Also, as a little extra, I would like to point out how Community's cast is arguably the most talented sitcom cast ever, people like Donald Glover, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, John Oliver, Ken Jeong...

I give wisecrack credit for doing one on community but i see what you mean. I felt the same way when they did that video on Spongebob. They used examples from season 4, while explaining harmons philosophy. There is also a lot more to explore, as you said, they could do a whole video on each episode alone and the ideas explored in each episode, as they did with rick and morty.

I watched Community for the first time about a month ago and I have been obsessed with it ever since. What’s weird is that me watching Community in the first place was to get away from what was happening to me irl - exams and stress. Meanwhile the show I was watching was telling me to focus on real life because if you distract and think you’re real life is a tv show, then your missing out on making your life more like this show - unpredictable and enjoyable.

We did Brecht's "Caucasian Chalk Circle" in college. At one point we scripted an actor calling out "Line" right near the middle point of the show. It was by far my favorite device we used to remind the audience that they're watching a play; everything got really tense in the room because the audience never once realized it was scripted. We let it stew for a while, definitely getting people to think things like "well, it's a college production, but still."

"There is skill to it. More importantly, it has to be joyful, effortless, fun. TV defeats its own purpose when it’s pushing an agenda, or trying to defeat other TV or being proud or ashamed of itself for existing. It’s TV. It’s comfort. It’s a friend you’ve known so well, and for so long you just let it be with you, and it needs to be okay for it to have a bad day or phone in a day, and it needs to be okay for it to get on a boat with Levar Burton and never come back. I just finished the series last week. I was avoiding season six, since half the cast had left the show for different reasons, but then I realized the rest of the the show was just as good as the other seasons. The new characters made for good additions, the writing was excellent and I laughed just as much as I did with the other seasons (except season 4. Something was off with it. People could smell it...). So I moved on from the fact that Pierce, Troy and Shirley wouldn't be there anymore and went on with it. The end was heartwarming, a little bittersweet, but that's life. I feel like an orphan of the show. Now I can only hope for the movie. Fingers crossed 😁

I don't think I really agree. Community uses the language of TV genres and tropes to weave far more complicated stories and present something new, but it's never really criticizing them. It is a jubilation of this particular language. It assumes you already speak this language and then proceeds to use wordplay with it. Oh and Don Quijote is a much better parallel, in my opinion, Brecht was a bit of a bad choice.
@styx9193
@styx9193 4 жыл бұрын
I, too, thought that the Brecht reference was somewhat forced. Brecht's epic theater was developed after the great catastrophies of the 20th century and during an era of global ideological polarization. In his view, theater was meant to transform individuals and thus society and not merely to question established tropes and genre conventions.
@nickzardiashvili624
@nickzardiashvili624 4 жыл бұрын
@@styx9193 I think Wisecrack has really been half-assing it for a very long time now. They have a simple formula which they follow: take a product of pop culture, take a work of high art or a philosopher and jampack as many comparisons as possible whether they fit or not. But hey, people seem to enjoy it, so my complaints are probably exaggerated.
@sethboyd4450
@sethboyd4450 4 жыл бұрын
I think Community does have some criticisms. The expectation of Britta and Jeff being endgame or Annie vs Britta making some love triangle are things other sitcoms would pounce on, but Community stands out in its unique way of dealing with romantic relationships between characters. But the criticisms are subtle, and much like Abed, Community is also a celebration of media to a new level. It critcises recycling tropes at face value and instead twists tropes to make a newer level of humour and storytelling. It's a criticism of not using the medium to its fullest, and a celebration of what television and storytelling can be.

My thoughts, exactly. Yet again, they did a real sloppy job here. Like they have a schedule for the uploads, but not much else. And dark souls - I can understand, they were desperate to get into a hype train, but community? Half a decade old show that's kinda popular on Netflix? I don't see anything justifying this. And the whole episode feels like it was made out of really stretched out thoughts they just had to fill with references from the show.
@panaproanio

@@MrFiremagnet Totally. Even the basic premise of Community as Brecht's Epic Theatre is pretty weak. Community is absolutely fueled by emotionality; I've rewatched it plenty of times just to feel close to the characters again, as if they were friends. And it's not just a personal thing, I've talked to other people about this. That's a radically different experience than Brecht's distancing effect. Which is a bit of a shame, because there's tons of things to say about Community. But whatevs, let's hope the next one's better.

I was totally noticing that too. Far too many S4 clips when discussing Harmon. I did wonder if it's because Harmon's writing tends to have longer set ups and is therefore harder to use as bite size clips, where as s4's writing is basically made for canned laugher. Quick note, the Jeff/Annie thing was mainly fueled by online fandom reactions to the couple. It wasn't necessarily as deep as subverting expectations vis-a-vis Jeff/Britta but still meaningful since it involved a kind of collaboration with the viewer. The point of a clip show has always been for the cast and crew to pretty much have a week off, by using clips of old shows instead of filming a whole new episode. Community not only subverted the clip show trope by "remembering" things that hadn't happened on the show, but they used their clip show to run around the studio lot filming ENTIRELY NEW 20 second scenes, changing sets and costumes to reflect all the old episodes. The Community clip show is the hardest they worked in the entire run, and the joy they express when talking about that episode is everything you need to know about why I love this show so damned much.

I just finished watching community for the first time a couple of weeks ago so I happy you made this video now. The show was awesome, totally different for other sitcoms making it a great change of pace. Liked you analysis of Abed, him and Troy were what made the show great. I really missed their silly ending when Troy left.

This show was so good it makes other shows less funny. When you see what's possible, everything else starts to look lazy. The fake clip show is my shining example. A traditionally cheap and easy episode to produce becomes one of the hardest most expensive. It's genius.

I mean if it helps, that’s not really a writer-intended plot point that’s being foretold, it was just the actress exiting. The only thing that’s being “spoiled” is the disappointment you may feel when her character doesn’t come back. if you know about community then you won’t get far without hearing about all the struggles it had as it replaced its cast, been almost cancelled, and had transformed by the end

That's literally how all language works. Words, and their meanings, don't exist "in nature". Certain sounds or squiggly lines become words when they are given a meaning by reference, or in relation, to an existing word or concept. Even the original words, in the oldest languages, were just abstract references to things that did exist "in nature" (i.e. trees, animals, water, a day, coldness, pain, etc.) References on references on references isn't a digression; it's what's been growing and evolving human communication since the dawn of civilisation.

I remember as child that many of the other children would _coincidentally_ also sometimes act like people on TV: E.g. Girls and boys sought partners, everyone was spreading rumours about who was together (or more like who they *thought* were together), and the people who were the best at using violence were seen as cool and got respect for it. I must have assumed all along that this tendency just dissappeared as people grew older but now I see that some people continue to do it even though they are _ADULTS_ even though others depend on them being in touch with reality.
