One thing I love about Genichiro is that he's a symbol of how you improve throughout the game. Your first time it seems impossible, your second time it's a reasonable challenge, the third time he's a pushover. The best part is the cutscenes for each fight. In your first fight Sekiro has to feel for his sword in order to pull it out showing that he is unskilled and rusty at this point of the story. In the second fight he takes his time but doesn't struggle to pull out the sword. But in the third fight Sekiro just pulls out his sword quickly showing he's a true master at the end. Genichiro is such a quality boss for being able to mark your progression throughout the game through both gameplay and cutscenes

I definitely think the demon of hatred is harder than the sword saint. The first time I got to his third phase, I beat Isshin. Not remotely the case with the demon. I actually hadn’t learned to use dodge I-frames for the entire game until the demon of hatred forced me to. Additionally, deflecting Isshin’s attacks felt so badass that it never felt grueling or grindy to me, whereas I spent a long time dying to the demon without having a clue how to survive long enough to defeat it

Isshin embodied the “by hook or by crook” philosophy of winning. He was a samurai, but he would use every possible way to win and survive he could regardless of if it would traditionally be considered “honorable.” I like how he says after giving you the Ashina text that the primary tenet of the Ashina style is just to win, by any means necessary, and he embodies that so well by throwing everything but the kitchen sink at you in that final fight. I still think it's ridiculous to say that Way of Tomoe is a seperate boss. Just because it's a different character doesn't mean he's his own boss fight, he's meant to be Phase 1 of Isshin's. He isn't designed to be a full boss, that's why he's only got the 1 health bar. As a Souls example, we don't count King of the Storm as a separate boss from Nameless King, he's just Nameless King's phase 1.

Hardest boss: FromSoft camera angle
@Amonimus5 жыл бұрын
I think at some bosses I've died in 10% of times because the camera unlocks and I can't dodge out of an attack, 20% because the locked camera rotates and I dodge into an attack and 40% because the camera sinks into a wall and gets stuck.
@FreekinEkin25 жыл бұрын
Agreed. More than half of my deaths can be attributed to random unlocking. It's normally due to FromSoft's shitty camera not being able to handle vertical angles, and sometimes because of small rooms. One time, when I was about to defeat Divine Dragon on my first ever try, the camera inexplicably unlocked and I was one-shotted. I have no idea why. There is literally no excuse. In a game that produces so much adrenaline, and hence so much salt, the sense of having been cheated is brutal. FromSoft really should have worked on this. Extra note: The Isshin boss fight became pretty unenjoyable because I could not see what unblockables he was doing, since he'd crouch into the grass for both the thrust and sweep. Punishing me for not being able to see something under the grass is pretty outrageous. This is somewhat avoidable if you coax him towards the busted bridge area. Gehrman had no such issue. This and Cuphead need to learn that obscuring the fight with a foreground/overlay is not a challenge. It is artificial difficulty and no fun.

@ukbleedbluex93403 жыл бұрын
Oh dude totally get what you mean. I just started playing about 2 months ago, the first time around I had to run around and bait him the whole time until the 3rd phase. The second time around I took the time to learn the patterns and it became smoothness. I find the first phase the most erratic oddly enough. Right after the you knock the first bar hit him with the mortal blade a few times to build up posture and then pressure him. Hit him twice and get ready to parry, when he does the crazy charged up slashes stand your ground and get ready to parry. If you pressure him enough he’ll always give you a mikiri counter. If lighting reversal isn’t your thing leave some emblems for mist raven feathers and the last phase is a cakewalk. @jacobnorris82562 жыл бұрын
The grab is pretty bullshit, specifically if you choose to dodge instead of jump it. The attack is designed to have you jump over it, but it's also often possible to dodge backwards against it. Problem is that jumping backwards only works if you already have some slight distance to him (IE: Too close and you're guaranteed to get hit, maybe unless your reaction speed is godly), making the attack seem inconsistently unavoidable. Sure, they could learn to jump the attack instead, but once you've implanted backwards dodging into your muscle memory, you're extremely unlikely to try anything else out, and even if you do learn you're supposed to jump it, it's MUUUCH harder to unlearn back-dodging and how to jump it than it is just learn to jump it. It is a pretty badly designed attack for how it encourages people to play incorrectly against it.

The most genuinely, straightforwardly difficult feeling fight for me was probably Owl (Father). I was stuck longer on Sword Saint, but Sword Saint is kind of an endurance fight and a good chunk of its difficulty just comes from how fucking LONG it takes. Owl is more straightforward and just HARD with no caveats or increased added element of repetition.

Me too! Yeah Isshin is not easy and it's a long fight, but at least his posture bar builds up faster and you can kinda be more aggressive with him. It took me almost triple the time it took me to defeat Isshin Sword Saint.

My hardest boss was Demon of Hatred, then the regular Owl Father, then Sword Saint. I never even fought Inner Owl, who would realistically be my hardest boss. I did the dragon’s return 3 years ago in my first playthrough, slogged and died so much from genichiro, father, guardian ape, both monks, and isshin with the strap. Bought the game back 2 months ago in my bday and i realized it now that the game’s not hard it’s just me. Did purification ending yesterday and surprisingly did super well despite suffering so much with the gauntlets: Inner genichiro & isshin. By the difficulty of the bosses i top isshin as top 1 for most challenging and demon of hatred as the hardest if you can’t doge and time ur strikes, genichiro’s a boss that u can’t run away because u will get punished but a fun boss the more you learn ( died by the bow more than the lightning at fp & gauntlet). Monke’s only hard if you panic, same with true monk they scary first glance. Great shinobi/owl father r just favorites of mine in the 2nd run, died so much in the first playthrough, only best solution for them both is to fight them in the middle and back off when necessary and never thrust for obv reasons. Hate duo apes, end of story. Why do people think Midir is so hard? You can get him into a loop of breath fire for a while and run away when he buffs or charges. (I'm sorry if i sound a bit stuck up, I'm genuinely curious)
@darkdragonite77705 жыл бұрын
midir isn't the hardest at all lmao. Orphan of kos and probably laurence deserve that spot.
@gerritdeman64105 жыл бұрын
I actually think if we had a community ranking for all bosses in all games again that these would be quite a bit different, since people have gotten a lot better at the games. I used to think of Ornstein and Smough as absolute gods of difficulty, but now they feel like two angry toddlers compared to bosses like Orphan of Kos and Isshin, the Sword Saint. Some bosses can also have a large drop in difficulty once people figure out how to beat them, for which I think Midir is a good example.

So funny story about the Corrupted Monk illusion. I had just shelled out everything I had fighting O’Rin, so I was clean out of Spirit emblems going into the fight. At this point, I wasn’t aware that Divine Confetti would do more damage, nor did I know that snap seeds worked on this boss. As such, it took me a long time to beat her. I’m talking weeks. It’s certainly harder than people give it credit for.

Honestly I use Genichro's arrow attacks to break my guard when I'm away from him so I can easily deflect his next attacks when I next move in. During the first Guardian Ape fight I just run behind him the whole time, stabbing and jabbing until he's dead. During his second phase, I just ran away until he did the belly slide move, moving in and hitting once before running away and repeating the process

Great vid dmod! I voted Demon of Hatred as the hardest boss and I regret that. After defeating him I noticed I was doing my good old DS play style - waiting for an opportunity and testing my patience. The true hardest boss for me after the second and third play through with the hardship plus the demon bell is Iishin Ashina (shura ending). The fire iishin hits like a truck and hes so fast that if you deflect or jump one second later you're already dead. The second phase is more ridiculous when you flee away to heal and he set the whole stage on fire like Ragnaros. Plus the follow up attack after the fire is another ridiculous attack given by iishin. I actually shouted with joy when I finally defeated him. What a great boss he is.

I just beat Sword Saint isshin for the first time yesterday. Ironically, I think I found the demon of hatred 100x more difficult. Gave up after 10 tries. Isshin feels more like a steady stream of progress as it really tests your mastery over what you’ve learned in sekiro. Once you take a seat back and see that, you see his patterns are pretty consistent.
@charlieblott43645 жыл бұрын
Genichiro is definitely my favourite boss, The design of the fight is so great as it teaches the player to use timely deflects over dodges and forces you to be reactionary in phase 2 as he mixes up some of his attacks. @carljohan92652 жыл бұрын
The thing about both ape and hate demon is that you need to focus on vitality damage rather than posture damage. Avoid their attacks rather than parry because it's usually not worth it. It also helps to use fire on ape since he is very weak to it, and the phoenix umbrella for demon since it can block his fire attacks and prevent the burn buildup.
