What I also love about that moment is that Annie's story actually felt plausible given it was based on true history between them. The fact Jeff and her used it in a plot to prank the dean means they had both somehow reconciled about it to the point they could knowingly use it as a joke. In the continuum of the unresolved romance subplot between them it's actually quite a cute moment.
