@@WesternMDRailfan That might happen, but for the rather unfortunate reason that Amtrak is implying they may retire or downsize their ACS-64 fleet pretty soon as they're placing some heavy emphasis on the new Airo trainsets. However since those haven't even started testing yet it's unclear what the full plan is at the moment.

1:55 I went to Stony Brook, and I'd go home on the weekends. The LIRR only arrived every hour or so. I remember having to fucking SPRINT to a train this one time, when it came on the opposite platform from where I was. I ran at full speed, shouting for the conductors not to leave me, because I knew damn well that if I didn't get this train, I was going to have to waste another hour or two there doing nothing - and I wanted to start my damn weekend already. I managed to catch the train in question, but I was totally winded by the time I got on.

The reason the SSL won't transport passengers in Illinois is because in order to use the Metra owned tracks there they basically had to sign a non compete agreement.

Yeah if the argument was they wanted to simplify and run the same trains on the Penn Line as on the diesel lines, dual modes would have been a smarter answer than "lemme make my own electricity rather than use the electricity that's a couple feet over my head and I could just reach for it."
