Thanks for giving Poncho's his due props. I know he originally didn't get a lot of love from the Salsa community, being a Chicano from the Southwest. I admire him because he was never trying to be something he wasn't. He just played the music he loved. He admired and paid his respects to its origins and did the work. In doing so, he earned the respect of his peers and the space to express his voice and that's what came out. After all, isn't it all about the music? In addition, he was a pioneer who introduced our community to this wonderful music and now hundreds of young Chicanito hipsters are diving in.

Robert, I am what can be considered an old school salsero and I got to know about Poncho one I started into jazz and latin jazz back in the 80's. That's when I first heard Poncho and I never thought he was somebody lesser (musically speaking, of course) than the conga players we all got to know (Barreto, Papo Pepin, Papo Clemente, Potato, Mongo, Changuito..). You could tell Poncho had his own style and flow. Yes, I like Poncho a lot and best of all, he seems to be a cool down to earth guy.

Gracias por estos videos! Just discovered them when I started practicing congas after a lot of years of having them stored. I just play for fun at home whenever time permits. Can I suggest preparing a video playing and breaking down bomba and also plena from Puerto Rico? Thanks again and stay safe. Saludos!

Eric, appreciate your love of the players that have paved the way for others and your ability to study their unique styles and en turn expand your playing chops which you so generously share with all of us. I have a very simple question. when playing three drums in latin Jazz as a Right handed player, is there a strick way your drums should be set up when sitting in the center should it be from the left to right( Quinto,Conga, Tumba) or ( Tumba, Quinto, Conga) ? Thanks in advance for your answer..
@APercussionLife4 жыл бұрын
It’s all preference... what you as a player feel comfortable with.... the Late Great Armando Peraza had the most unique set ups I’ve ever seen and yet he was still great... as long as you’re feeling comfortable and it’s making sense to you... use whatever set up you want... as long as its not risking any injury or going to cause you to get tired faster... it’s all preference my friend.

SE PUEDE DECIR QUE EL TUMBAO NO TIENE UN PATRÓN A SEGUIR , PORQUE CADA CONGUERO TOCA DE UNA MANERA PERSONAL SEGÚN A COMO CADA UNO SIENTE Y A LA VEZ RESPETANDO LA CLAVE. HE NOTADO ESO, NADIE TOCA IGUAL A NADIE Y NADIE SIENTE IGUAL A NADIE. GRACIAS POR EL VIDEO, CADA DÍA ALGO NUEVO SE APRENDE SALUDOS ERIK !
