I have been looking for a new ride on mower as my old one i got with the new house purchased is terrible and the lawn is not level so my current mower is scalping the lawn so after watching this I going to go with the cobra great video explaining everything I needed to know 👍
@georgehubbert49607 ай бұрын
I think a a comparison between the Cobra and the Stiga Estate 384 would have been much better as it has a high backed seat, larger engine and larger grass collector with the telescopic lever.
@MachineryNation7 ай бұрын
Spec for spec yes I agree. But price comparable and the reason we done with video was that the Cobra looks so similar to the Mountfield. When they were released, we said “that’s just a Mountfield with a different badge” so when we found out how different they were we had to do a video.

One of the things I look at on mowers is the steering drive which is usually a pinion gear on the bottom of the steering shaft engaging with a quadrant with attached tie rods . Some mowers have a quadrant that is thin and/or the teeth are rather shallow leading to premature wear and a steering wheel with a lot of play . Another thing is plastic bonnets , that's a no from me on both these machines , a pressed steel bonnet will last the life of the machine whereas plastic often ends up cracked and broken.
@MachineryNation7 ай бұрын
Great point Gordon, I’ve always been a fan of metal bonnets, seldom seen these days.
@Chicken-x6q6d7 ай бұрын
I'd go for the Cobra simply because I've used petrol mowers made by them before, plus the reasons you stated which is that seat, the power, and the fact that you can mulch with it. Plus I think it is the better looking of the two. What sells me on it though is that you can get off it without it cutting out, that's really annoying when you're working big areas with longer grass where it is not practical to scout the area first and things can be difficult to spot until you are almost on top of them.

Would definitely go with the Cobra! Purely due to my personal experience in dealing with Mountfield in the past!!!

I have the Mountfield 1530H. Rigid grassbox with extending rod,otherwise almost identical to machine tested. I also have a deflector that replaces the grassbox, spreading the cutting. It seems a good machine,though used a good amount of petrol.
@MachineryNation7 ай бұрын
The 1530 was similar spec to what the cobra is now.
@blurredintooblivion6626 ай бұрын
Agree with that, the Mountfield machine has been under speced due to the Stiga range being more 'premium'

Really useful video. I was looking at Stiga mowers e.g. Estate 384 or 598 but I think the Cobra LT92HRL might be better value with the mulch plug and hitch included? We have about 2 acres of lawn and paddock and was tempted by a side discharge with mulching function but I think maybe a rear collector should be best if I just mulch or deflect in the paddock?

Hope it's ok to jump on this for advice - we have the Cobra and the only issue is the ultra sensitive seat safety cut out. My wife and son aren't heavy enough to be able to sit back in the seat to weigh it down, they have to balance on the front edge which is uncomfortable and tricky. Is there any way of adjustment of this? We have checked the manual but nothing is mentioned and I have read that it's the same on lots of other mower brands. I was worried about invalidating the warranty if we cut the wires. Our garden is flat so no risk of rolling over as far as I can see. Thanks
@MachineryNation6 ай бұрын
Thanks Steve. They both have the same issue to be fair. Some people obviously work around the safety switches, but I wouldn’t advise this for that reason. Might be worth checking with the dealer to see what can be done.

Thanks for this. I'm in the market for something like this. Just bought a house on 4 acres. Needs work and I'm happy to do it myself. I've been looking at buying a Solis Compact tractor, as I need a few of the attachments. I'd be using it for cutting the grass, but it doesn't come with a collector. Would one of these ride on mowers be a good second vehicle to use to collect the grass, or something bigger? This is a gteat review and love watching your videos. Cheers.
@MachineryNation7 ай бұрын
They wouldn’t be suitable for 4 acres of grass, 1.5 I would say would be the limit. A few reasons 1. It would take too long 2. The life span of the machine would significantly reduce 3. Collecting 4 acres would be a chore 4. 4 acres of mowing would be classed as prosumer rather than domestic, so high end domestic/low end commercial grade machine. I hope this helps.

I would go for the Cobra, funny question when you operated them James did you find any difference comfort in the operating the drive pedals 🤔
@MachineryNation7 ай бұрын
Being hydrostatic you don’t really use the brake during operation, only to park so not a massive difference. One thing we didn’t mention was that the linkage underneath them was a lot simpler due to being on different sides. So much easier when needing to be worked on in later years.

We’ll explain video cobra for me as I am tall
@michaelpatterson58115 ай бұрын
I bought this Mountfield in January [2024] - wish I'd seen this video first! I have a number of negative points. 1] Don't be fooled by the 'Mountfield' name. It's only a name. The machine and engine is now made under the Italian 'Stiga' company brand - but it's all manufactured in China. 2] Neither Stiga nor Cobra have designed and built anything new - 3] Why does it have headlights, please? (which cost you to buy, tho' you will never use them); - 4] that 'reversing button' is simply dangerous - to reverse, you only have one hand available for the steering wheel. Try doing that on a slope; - 5] Why are there no less than 5 forward gears? You can only use 2 for cutting speed purposes; an extra, lower gear for tight corners would actually be useful; - 6] the 'pull-button' cutter engager is dreadful, and brutal on such a small engine (it often just stalls it); - 7] the petrol tank is white plastic that you can't see through, so you have no idea how much fuel you have; - you need to take off the fillercap to look inside, but be careful! The sharp arrow-shaped hood catch is 1cm above the cap, and will take the skin off the back of your hand - and 8] you cannot get the nozzle of your fuel container into it - you need a funnel in one hand, and you probably can't hold a 5-litre can up with the other. Finally, 9] This machine is far too cumbersome and heavy for my wife - so I've got to do all of the grass cutting!! It's a Man's Mower.

That mulching option looks a bit rubbish, you shouldn't be getting heaps of grass left on the surface like you picked up.
@MachineryNation7 ай бұрын
If mulching you I wouldn’t have cut so low, I was taking off 50% of the material, whereas if I was mulching I would have only taken a third off.
@dab.7 ай бұрын
@@MachineryNation I'd like to have seen the mulching option demonstrated. If it does work as it should then it would be big advantage over the competition.
