As I have learned from my classes for my Marketing Degree, one of the biggest reasons Krispy Kreme's started to fail was they forgot who they were. Not only the huge expansion across the country in a short time, but the in store boxed up donuts. As you stated in your video, their key seller is the hot and fresh donuts in the store. By making their products appear in grocery stores, gas stations and mini marts, they lost the sense of wonder and a lot of their taste. The recipe was made to be hot and fresh from their stores, not from the grocery store
@jamesdeppeler7934 жыл бұрын
That and just expanding too fast leads to poor QC and management problems. All those stores they opened in a hurry might have seemed profitable for a minute, but I guarantee they had issues from opening day. Bad locations, bad management, poor oversight, quality control issues. Day one, but they didn't see it initially because just bu virtue of their brand power and the novelty aspect they had customers coming in at first. And after the locals had all cycled through a few times, they stopped coming because of the issues I mentioned, and perhaps others as well. Rapid expansion like that is treacherous and generally difficult to manage, but companies don't often realize how badly they are managing it because the new expansions seem to do well initially because of novelty and brand power, and by the time reality has set in they have hurt their brand, overextended, have problems managing all these stores, etc., etc. They expanded too quickly and managed it poorly, I can say that much for sure. The details would require a more in-depth analysis.

I used to work at Krispy kreme and when you can get a Krispy kreme glazed donut right next door at the gas station then there's a problem. I don't feel their the problem allowing donuts to be sold in grocery stores but what you need to do is to make deals with certain grocery stores like maybe they can only be sold at Costco for maybe they could be sold at a Walmart or target. But if you allow them to be sold at Walmart and target and Costco and Safeway and food Max you're just asking for problems because those businesses are taken away profit that you can make by having people go into the store. I remember during the decline they actually stopped letting people know that we were making hots glaze don't donuts. If people asked for a hot glaze will give it to on but we don't offer them.
@kolive814 жыл бұрын
I agree that selling them at the store devalued them, I also think they doubled-down on the devaluation by selling them through charitable organizations. not that I think working with a charity is bad per se, but the quality of the donut from a charity buy vs. the hot in store had to have an impact. I'd also venture to state that putting a hamburger patty on top of a Krispy Kreme is not going to sell donuts. But what do I know of weird Dixie Classic Fair cuisine.
@Katsudon3054 жыл бұрын
I agree. Sometimes over expansion starts making a company less special. There has been an increase in demographics of people who like to support the locals rather than chain. There's nothing wrong with chain, but I think there is a stigma in people's mind. This is personal speculation.

All chain donuts have a half-life. If they sit around for too long, they’re AWFUL. Krispy Kreme’s half-life is even shorter than others. Hours, really. If you fresh buy a box in the morning, by lunch time it’s closing in on inedible, and definitely needs a quick zap in the microwave to bring it back. By mid-afternoon, just toss whatever’s left. When they’re fresh and hot, they are the food of the gods. Later that morning, they’re still amazing. That afternoon, don’t bother. Grocery store Krispy Kreme’s have sat around for God-knows-how-long, and is why they’re so inedible.

I’ve had both Krispy Kreme and Dunkin’ Donuts. You go to Dunkin’ Donuts to have a quick, okay breakfast, but you go to Krispy Kreme to have some damn good donuts. The donuts at DD are not as good. They may have more variety for what they offer. But something about KK, the experience, the donuts being glazed, the friendly workers(at least at mine), the 50s aesthetic, the memories I’ve had there with my family. All that combined makes me like KK more, and yes I may be biased, but they offer a unique experience, with a unique product, no other place makes donuts like that. Now I was excited when we got a DD, but it’s honestly not as good as everyone said it was, at least in my opinion, I was disappointed. Any store or shop can make donuts, but most taste the same, if you want a unique experience with great donuts, I’d recommend KK, hands down.
@ericbarlow67725 жыл бұрын
Zach T. Corp I also think it has to do with taste. Dunkin uses a style that is more akin to cake. KK uses a French recipe that is meant to be light more akin to a croissant (a real one and not the huge ones I see here in Yankeeland). Now I'm from NC and grew up eating them with a Cheerwine. That's a good combo.

They're fantastic when you get them at a location. If you buy them from a store in a box the flavor isn't the same. What happens when you buy them in boxes is the lack of oxygen inside the box. This prevents the glaze from drying and making the product soggy. At a store location the glaze dries over the donut which creates a barrier to prevent air from drying the dough. Keeping it from getting soggy and preserving that nice fluffy dough texture. If you're going to try a Krispy Kreme donut for the first time do not get it from a box. Go to a location.

True, but you can also follow the instructions on the box that say to zap it in the microwave for 8 seconds and it warms the dough and glaze.

Watch this video, Jacob. It was recorded before the crash itself happened, but it explains a lot about the US economy, and why crashes such as '08 occur. I remember around 2006-08 the supermarket chain I worked for in the Boston area had Krispy Kreme donuts delivered fresh every day and had a dedicated display in the bakery. A guy in a Krispy Kreme truck came in every day and delivered them and took the old ones. The last year or so before they stopped the case was litterally still full every time the guy delivered fresh donuts. One other point that I don't see mentioned: Krispy Kreme was also seen as a "Southern" brand (as in Southern U.S.). When they expanded into places like the Northeast there was initially a novelty effect (where lines were out the door) but within a few years people went back to going to Dunkin Donuts. Most of the places that I know of that were opened in that timeframe have since closed.

Tbh until I saw this video I've always perceived Krispy Kreme as a donut shop by our definition, which is really a coffee shop. When competing with dunkin they are likely facing the same competition as they would with tims. Not the competition for the best donuts, but the competition for fast cheap coffee. Though its called dunkin donuts its a coffee place first, donut shop second. After all what are you dunkin the donut in? So if they opened with their same tactics they fail. they arent going to attract people on the basis of donuts, they need to do it on hot coffee. And if thats not really there they don't attract the buyers. Like when I look at myself, I have never in my life driven past a place that sells donuts and impulse bought a donut because i want a donut. I used this reply in another thread, but since your reply was copypasted there I'll copy past my response here. That means the Iphone was influential, not that it was innovative. Tech companies knew at the time that a phone where the almost sole mode of input was touch was a dumb idea. It's hellaciously inaccurate, slow to use, prone to breaking, and at the time it was too expensive to justify. The only reason all phones look like that today is because the general public doesn't know shit about technology, and the smartphone fad only seems to have made it worse.
@elijahfordsidioticvarietys87706 жыл бұрын
you are an idiot and YOU don't know anything about technology. it sounds like you think touch screens are bad for phones, get with the times gramps. also influential and innovative pretty much mean the same thing. apple changed the landscape of the entire industry with the iPhone, therefor it was innovative.

I think you're vastly underestimating the effects of the low-carb diet revolution. 2003-2004 sounds about right for the Atkins-style diet craze. While a lot of the "science" behind Atkins has since been partially debunked, it really took the diet-conscience population by storm. Where I live, we even had brick-and-mortar stores specifically stocked to cater to low-carb consumers (they're long gone now). I'm pretty sure Dunkin Donuts was also hit hard. While I'm sure this isn't the only reason, I'll bet it's a big one.
@harrybarker43706 жыл бұрын
Fred Leggett surely the diet conscious demographic doesn't overlap with the donut eating market much? Even in America 😂
@fredleggett9236 жыл бұрын
You'd be surprised. Remember that, before, dieting mostly consisted of avoiding fats. In fact, I believe it was the FDA who encouraged food suppliers substitute sugar in lieu of fat, as it was thought sugar wasn't so readily stored in the body. Also, when dieting, you're not supposed to completely deprive yourself of unhealthy desired foods...rather, you're supposed to go ahead and splurge once in awhile. Otherwise, you run the risk of engorging yourself during particularly weak-willed times and reverting to old eating habits. Atkins, though, essentially slapped a zero-tolerance policy on almost all carbohydrates (save fiber) in order to get the body into a state of ketosis. When I was on Atkins (many years ago), my daily carb intake was in the single digits. I even had to closely monitor what condiments I consumed. You can't imagine how hard this was for someone addicted to bread. And it was working. People were losing a LOT of weight on the high-fat, high-protein diet Atkins encouraged. I experienced these results myself. Problem is, the body isn't supposed to stay in ketosis for long periods. And it made it terribly difficult to exercise. Carbs have their role, just like fats and protein, so remaining on such a diet caused other serious health issues. Getting back to Krispy Kreme, Atkins and other low-carb diets drove a stake into their carb-laden hearts. Even carb-shaming became a thing at the time. KK never stood a chance against the paradigm shift that Atkins revealed. It's somewhat of a miracle they didn't go completely bankrupt.
@pr0ntab6 жыл бұрын
Dunkin did the smart thing and invested in some TurboChefs so they could warm up hi-protein frozen breakfast sandwiches; that coupled with the coffee selection allowed them to down play their donuts and now the "America runs on Dunkin'" campaign barely references them. Krispy Kreme is too tied to being about 🍩 to pivot like that, they don't wanna be in the same market as Starbucks since Dunkin already grabbed the low-cost tier nationally. But it restricts their growth and diet fads definitely do not help.
@cubfanbudman68556 жыл бұрын
I think the low carb craze also was around the time that Supersize Me documentary came out. It couldn’t have been good for fast food joints or places like Krispy Kreme either.

Okay, have to add my 2 cents worth. Living in LA, years ago, I knew someone working on the show Dawson’s Creek, and they did location filming in N. Carolina. He came back raving about a donut place called Krispy Kream. At one point a Krispy Kream location was opened in a city just north of LA in Ventura County. My wife & I would make the trip there to get lots of KK donuts. We felt it was worth the drive, they were as yummy as our friend said. A buzz began around about how irresistible the donuts were. After a while they opened several locations in LA County. Lines around the building no matter what time we went! It was nuts! “Best donuts EVER!” People said. But, then, over time, most of the locations shut down. Suddenly, people were saying, “Meh. I never thought they were that spectacular.” Daym, people are f’n fickle! (I still, always maintained in those conversations that I liked them best!!) Have since moved from California to S. Carolina, and we enjoy them here. I mean, a new location opened up the street a week ago. My wife & I drove there recently-drive thru was so long we said, “Not today.” I still looooove them, and I’m glad they’ve recovered! Oh, no interest in buying them at a grocery store. I like the whole experience you detailed in your video.

Not only does it enhance the taste but they have an absolutely different texture before cooling down. Pro Tip - If you ever get the glazed donuts cold you can put them in the microwave for about 10-13 seconds (11 seems best in my microwave) and they come pretty darn close again.

11 seconds on a 700 watt or 900 watt microwave. We needs specific data.
@80s_Gamr2 жыл бұрын
@@CONFUCIUS-f2x The time is so short it doesn't make much difference. The higher the wattage, the lower the time... but we're literally talking about the difference of a second or two, maybe three. It's also subjective - what I feel is the the best result may not feel the same for you. They're cheap - go buy a dozen and test it out for yourself until you get the result you like best. I implied all that (fairly obviously) in what I wrote. For what it's worth I have a 1000w microwave and previously an 1100w.

*Krispy Kreme Donuts are really good, but they are too small and over priced* 💰

Yulp, way too small to have such a big price

Not really...they aren’t that expensive for the taste

While they are a bit small (around a inch or two), still the price for them is standard for the market, my local donut shop sells you a doughnut for $1 and they are a inch or two bigger, but still thats how the market is.
@backwhenarmyoftwofirstcame28736 жыл бұрын
It's basically 100% sugar and yeah, extremely overpriced. What is it, like 17 dollars for a dozen? It's absurd. it must cost them 10 cents to make a donut. "the price for them is standard for the market" no, not really dude. I live in the obese Texas and there isn't a single donut shop that even comes close to how overpriced Krispy Kreme is. My local grocery store sells a dozen for 4$, Dunkin sells a dozen for 9 or 10 dollars, shipleys is about the same, local non-chain stores are even cheaper etc.

Growing up in the 1970s and 80s South Carolina, Krispy Kreme was an attraction. It was one of the places we visited when we went to Greenville. And yes, that sign was often the tipping point. Later, I went to college near a Krispy Kreme. They started the doughnut machine at that location in the wee hours of the morning. We'd all pile in someone's car in the middle of the night and head over there. Some people even pulled all-nighters in the Krispy Kreme studying for tests, drinking coffee, and eating doughnuts. For some reason, we thought that Greenville and Atlanta were the only Krispy Kreme restaurants. Although we were mistaken, I would say that the restaurants at both locations have a long and storied history with generations of college students and their families. I took my daughters there recently.

@Homer Simpson I wouldn't dare try. I'll let them figure it out for themselves. Personally, I just don't get it. I love 'hillbilly culture', but not that part of it. Being in the back of a Ford Bronco, off-roading, while carrying an LR-308 for no reason other than it's fun? That's awesome! Being 500lbs. Not awesome.

manictiger well, I was born and raised in Tennessee, and luckily I can eat just about anything, and not get fat. I actually have to make a gallon of sweet tea every day because of how quickly it gets drank lol.

manictiger I was going to say the same thing not Homer Simpson said. My brother can eat 8 full plates at an all you can eat buffet plus desert before being kicked out for eating all the expensive food (actually happened to us and we didn't tip our waitress), but I can't do that without checking the scale the next day just to find out that I put on 5 extra pounds.
