I stayed at an "illegal" airbnb in DC, they had a lot of rules about "not talking to anyone, and if approached, you are a friend of the homeowner" etc. Honestly I didn't care too much, but ultimately reported them for the place being disgusting and insecure. But they just removed the listing and relisted it under a new name within a week lol.

The ugly side of tourism is that these companies ruin entire neighborhoods and cities. For example, lots of generational folks in the French Quarter of New Orleans and nearby neighborhoods were pushed out to make room for daily renters. There are entire neighborhoods where no one lives there because it's more profitable to have it all be airbnbs. Kinda like South Beach and the boutique hotels. All the local culture gets killed. You are missing a key criticism of Airbnb that was well documented. Hosts who create false listings and con users into a new listing at the last minute. As an example that I remember a young couple rented an Airbnb in Chicago months before arriving. When they did arrive, the host said something along the lines of a water leak was going on to make it to where they couldn't rent that particular place they originally had seen on the app, but for a lesser or same price, they could rent out another apartment. The host would then show them all the photos either inside or outside of the app. Being that it was a last-minute change and as a guest, you couldn't switch out without paying extremely high prices, they reluctantly would agree. As you can guess, the house was not what was described in the photos and would be a horrible experience for the guest. On top of that, Airbnb would deny them their money back, saying that they rented outside of the application and that the refund policy doesn't apply.

@SnoopyDoo I think the criticism in the fact that since it's such a decentralized and "personal" service it facilitates and breeds predatory behavior that other services does not have a problem with. For example if Airbnb went for a more quality over quantity approach and more carefully vetted their hosts issues like these would be far less prevalent. If a service makes it easy for scammers and predators to thrive, it's a shoddy service.

But Airbnb has almost no competition, people already like them better than hotels so why do they keep losing money?
@SaruParadise3 жыл бұрын
Customer acquisition has to be a huge cost. So much of startup profitability is growing the user base to grow revenue and raise valuation (or stock price) to get more capital to expand to get more capital to expand… their second biggest cost is probably legal and lobbying as they, like Uber, benefit hugely from being able to skirt regulations that apply to their competitor (hotels) which aren’t hugely profitable (compare Marriott or Hilton valuations to Airbnb). But fundamentally it may not be a profitable venture. Hotels are regulated for a reason. Airbnb is forced to self-regulate as they grow, and as some places start regulating then. The sharing economy is more a product of venture capital than good ideas, and lobbying to skirt regulations that would benefit the customers who don’t realize the lack of protection until it all hits the fan.

Hotels offer services such as concierge and 24 hour guest assistance that I am happy to pay extra for. They also have well marked exits for fires and often have restaurants. I don't travel enough to want to pinch pennies on this. If I want to stay somewhere interesting and not located in the middle of a tourist area, I've discovered larger bed and breakfasts (at least 8 rooms) with years of reviews to be a lovely choice. They often have an on-staff person all night as well. I wouldn't touch an Airbnb. I have used Uber and the other one, but not during the pandemic.
@sor39995 ай бұрын
Don't need to pay extra. You can find hotel rates cheaper than AirBnB. A lot of listings are desperately trying to get their mortgage paid off. Hotels don't have this problem and they of course scale better because they have 500+ unit buildings so when things are slow they can offer rock bottom rates. I have a lot of younger friends that can't seem to do anything without an "app". AirBnB is what they're used to and they don't know how to book a hotel to compare rates. Hotels during non-busy times can be incredibly cheap and going for the cheapest accommodations is usually better than the best AirBnBs.

I've been looking at prices of a hotel for a Tokyo trip and then I check Airbnb, and Airbnb isn't even that much cheeper as well as the price not feeling justified for what you get. With a hotel you get amenities, room service, pro-consumer laws and regulations hotels have to follow. Airbnb's are just a one bedroom apartment with questionable quality, and no consumer protection other than a bad review that can be ignored. And even if an Airbnb place is slightly bigger, you're going to be spending your time exploring the city and not stuck in your room anyway.
In a hotel I don't have to worry about throwing the damp towel into the corner but if Airbnbing I have to worry about messing up the place. Maybe it's just me that's paranoid.

I don't travel all that much, but when I do, AirBNB has been on my regular rotation of services I search when shopping for lodging and comparing prices and all that. The three times I've used them have all been when traveling to attend motorsports events, which are usually in smaller markets with less lodging options nearby, and have found them to be cost effective in those situations while providing a generally better experience than a hotel. Of course, that's as a result of doing my research on where we end up staying, and I've seen plenty of listings that likely wouldn't have resulted in as good of an experience, and at times have decided on more traditional options. I think it's smart to add them and similar sites to the places you look for lodging when traveling, but treat them as another potential option, not as your only or primary choice.

Many cities have effectively “banned” AirBNB to 1. Only allow primary residences to be listed. 2. Only a small percentage of the year can be hosted. And it has had ZERO effect on rent prices going up. They keep rising. It has nothing to do with Short Term Rentals. Reason #3 is not really as big a problem as others say. This company is the perfect argument for the existence of regulation and standards, and the perfect example of why a lack of regulation is bad for humanity. If you want to complain about your rent, or even hear anyone else talk about it--first talk about AirBnB. In fact, the lack of affordable housing directly causes homelessness. Thanks AirBnb. Sure you could have it in the terms and conditions "don't be racist or trash people's houses", but you'd assume that'd be a given. I guess a fix to the last issue could be making it so that you can't put whole houses on there, but just individual rooms or something, then people might stop buying up houses just to use as airbnbs. I've only used airbnb once as a guest while visiting a city for a convention and it was fine.

@Kylie Byrnes they make billions because they created a product/service that a lot of people wanted to use, where else do you expect the money to go? I'll blame big businesses when they're actually at fault for something, but all the examples given in this video were the result of the shitty people using the service and not the company itself. Just blaming the company doesn't punish the people that caused the actual harm. Arguments like this just allows other people to get away with stuff and punishes the others using these services who do nothing wrong, because the blame just gets placed on the largest, easiest target. And they do do things, they change policies and update their terms or whatever to try and disuade things like this in the future, but you can't make something 100% invulnerable to stupid people. I even suggested a change they could make in my original comment by making it so people couldn't put whole houses up for rent on their service, which isn't "letting them get away with doing nothing". "you're all sheep" the only people I see use this phrase are all people who think exactly the same and just read it somewhere else or heard it in a movie and they think it sounds cool. Airbnb didn't tell me shit or to think a certain way, I'm just giving my own opinion based on what was said in the video, but all that seems to have gone over your head in favour of "big business = bad" instead of maybe "the individuals who caused this harm should be held accountable for their actions" .

I used Airbnb for many years, but their customer service has gone down to be the worst I’ve ever experienced. So bad to the point that I would rather just stay in a hotel than deal with Airbnb if something goes wrong. They literally couldn’t care less, and their whole customer service department seems to share one single brain cell.

Nonexistent customer service. We had a problem in a house we were renting that could have been solved in 5 minutes if there was any CS available. Instead we lost 2 days of our vacation so Airbnb could save money by not staffing a CS department.

I've used AirBNB as a guest twice, and am about to use it for a third time on a trip to Pittsburgh next week. My first time was a house, and it had a good amount of the people's personal belongings. Which was weird, but it was a nice place. Second time was duplex. This was bought to be an AirBNB. Wasn't as nice as the house, but it is also way cheaper. No frills, but it had beds and a hot shower. We're staying in the other half next week, it ended up being on par with the price of a hotel, but I enjoy having more room and only one connected neighbor.

I will NEVER stay with AirBnB again. In 2019 my husband and I flew to California for Camp Flog Gnaw which is a music festival/carnival. We had plans to stay in San Francisco for a few days and then drive to and LA for the festival (staying at AirBnB's in both cities). We get to San Francisco and the host for that one didn't even respond back to us when we had trouble finding the place; we called and messaged them numerous times, luckily there was a Best Western out in the middle of nowhere (right where we were) so we stayed there instead. Customer service said they would refund us for 50 PERCENT of the FIRST night of our hotel stay but that was it..... but it was a huge inconvenience and we almost didn't have a place to stay that night and I was really disappointed that 50% of the first night was all that they could do 😒 AND THEN, hold on it gets better!!! We drove to LA and once we got there we were about to head over to our AirBnB and they guy canceled on us last minute!! Which I know the hosts allowed to do but it doesn't make it any less shitty and I was super upset at how customer service handled it again, they said they would book us another AirBnB if it fit into THEIR price range, news flash, we couldn't find one close to Dodger Stadium that fit into their price range so we resorted to staying with Best western again, surprisingly they still had rooms available even tho there was a festival going on. I love Best Western, On that Trip my husband and I became rewards members and now we earn points every night you stay with them and you can use those points to get free nights. Him and I just got married in February and on our Honeymoon we drove cross country to Las Vegas and stayed at a Best Western right on the strip. They're literally everywhere too, we had to stop in the middle of the night in New Mexico in the mountains because it was snowing so bad we couldn't drive.....guess what we found a Best Western in the middle of no where; because its a Franchise you can literally find them everywhere because people will just open them up. Him and I are becoming truck drivers and we promised ourselves we would always stay with Best Western before anything else and we will never stay with AirBnB again.

This is one of the biggest reasons that rent in Orlando has risen 50% since Covid started. I've heard the government and businesses claim it's because there isn't enough housing available (as if there is just a lack of physical property), but the area is constantly building new developments at a staggering rate. Yet, rent never slows. It's because there is no available housing that's affordable because the supply is low. And if a person sells their home, it's either bought up by a company or a rich couple for usage as a rental or an airbnb until the market goes up further and they can sell it for huge margins. It's a scam against the poor. I avoid airbnb unless I'm renting a cabin in the countryside. I know that using an airbnb in a city is just encouraging owners to rent them out to people, continuing the problem.

Side note, at 8:05 the "Muslim ban" didn't include countries with the highest Muslim populations--only the countries on the terror watch list. Calling it the "Muslim ban," is a left wing talking point. Fine if you believe that was the actual intension, but again, that's from a left wing perspective, not a neutral one.

Listen. I used to work for the costumer service of Airbnb for a couple of years. The "violation of privacy" issues were INCREDIBLY COMMON. And the Airbnb internal policies were not made to protect the users but to kinda bribe them into not reporting the plataform to the authorities. Wanted a refund? You got it. Wanted a $1000 coupon to book a new place? you got it. Wanted Airbnb to book an 5 star hotel to compensate for whatever issue you had in your reservation? YOU GOT IT. It was crazy.
