The moment they started restricting what you could buy with the 20% coupon, the end was guaranteed. They unwittingly trained their customers to only shop there with those coupons, and then once they started to take that away, customers didn't feel like they needed BB&B anymore.

They also used to accept coupons from other companies. Never made much financial sense to me, but it was legitimately a big driver for most of the people I know who used to shop there

Couldn't be more correct. While working there, we tried to start enforcing the expiration dates on the coupons. Holy shit. I thought it was gonna kick off WWIII. The dumbest thing they ever did was start fucking with the coupons. Guaranteed the end, indeed.

Those 20% off coupons were so ubiquitous that if I didn't have one in hand, I never even bothered going in there at all, since I knew I'd essentially be overpaying by 25%. I have a feeling a lot of other people felt the same way.

I go there, with the 20% coupon of course, for one item and one item only, that being Zero Water filters. It is actually much cheaper to get them there with the coupon than anywhere else. Everything else there is a ripoff, save for end of season clearance patio furniture, which I have run across a few times while there getting my filters.

Probably the last thing I bought from them a few years ago was a beard trimming kit as it seems to be one of the few brands of things I could actually use the 20% off coupon for. A few days later I was shopping at a Wal-mart for some other things - found that same trimming kit for less than what I had paid using the coupon! On the other hand, back around 2005, for reasons I still don't understand, they had the hot new Power Wheels (I think it was that brand) Jeep Hurricane ride on toy. I was able to use a 20% off coupon for it and it was already $50 less than Toys'R'Us. Saved about $100 on that one and the kids had a pretty epic Christmas.

My mom stopped going to Bed Bath and Beyond in the past 6+ months or so when the store actually refused the 20% coupon if something was already "on sale". She also primarily went there for Brita water filters and they have stopped stocking them as well. So yeah... that didn't help things either.

BBB used to be special - like a “treasure hunt” place. You knew going in it would be a little more expensive but it was worth it to get the really good stuff. Now when I go to my local BBB it feels like a really sad version of Walmart. They tried to compete on cost with an emphasis on their lower quality store brands which destroyed their boutique business model. If I want cheap stuff, I go to WM or Target, not BBB.

My experience: it was good for a few things. As you said; if you wanted options for your bath towels or a particular pillow, they were good. But I swear, the whole store slowly filled up with "as seen on TV" gadgets. And then, the last time we went in to shop, they had a toiletries department and a World Market food section. All this stuff took up floor space that could have been given over to the selection that made them worth the trip. I see this in a lot of stores. Everyone wants to sell everything to every consumer and the result is every store is the same. Like how Best Buy is giving up computer and tv sales space to have an appliance department of three fridges and a coffee maker.

No, it's not made up. I worked there in stores for 11 years. Upper management was arrogant and rude. One of their main guys, the "President of Stores", who had started as a stock boy in the very early days and rose through the ranks, visited our store once. He was an intimidating guy, and our service trainer was a nervous wreck. He asked her some pointed questions and then spoke to her so rudely she cried. Then later in the visit he did the same thing to her again. They were a bunch of bullies. He and a lot of his ilk were all let go in the past couple of years because, while they were good at being creeps, they didn't have a clue of how to actually run the company in a changing environment. It seemed like the new people were at least nicer, but the damage was done.

We made a wedding registry there in '15, and my mother in law bought us two sets of dishes from the registry. When they arrived, fully half the dishes were cracked or chipped/broken. We went to the store to ask for an exchange and were basically told "Nope, can't do it, no proof you didn't break them. Sorrynotsorry." Wound up throwing away the broken ones and the worst of the cracked ones, and over the years even the ones that were good when we got them have started to break or crack with normal use. Meanwhile, the Corelle plates my parents gave us, that were from sets they'd bought when my now-22 year old brother was a baby, have shrugged off all manner of abuse with nary a chip. Forget BB&B, the products they sell are not quality enough to justify the prices. I've gotten better quality from Walmart's store brand stuff.
@momentumspace

That is wild. When I worked there as a hardline mgr, we would take back absolutely anything, and pay the customer back in cash. When I got married, I abused that return policy so much lol. I can't even imagine them not taking something back. We would return stuff obviously used by the customer. The policy was so wide open that abuse was rampant.

I always check everything I buy there - well, used to buy there I guess. I once bought a 10 quart soup pot, got it home and noticed the bottom was completely crushed in and concave. This was a thick pot, it would have taken a LOT of weight to bend it like that, like they parked a Nissan on top of it for the boat ride from China or wherever it came from. I went back to replace it but every single one they had on the shelf had been crushed and damaged in an identical way. Thankfully they were okay with refunding me for it.
@laurendisney
@laurendisney Жыл бұрын
@@momentumspace I'm not sure why my store refused an exchange or return, but honestly I was/am less irritated about than the fact that these dishes have barely survived 7 years, when those Corelle plates I mentioned have lasted nearly 30 years at this point. They've been dropped on tile so many times with no damage, it's wild. Yet bowls and plates from our wedding set, that have never been dropped, develop mysterious chips or cracks that go clean through the dish. That's honestly what upsets me the most, because their stuff is so expensive you'd expect it to last!

I worked there for 5 years. I really think getting rid of our original store brands like Wamsutta, and introducing all the new ones was a bad experience. There were so many new brands coming out all at once, it was hard to keep them straight and they had no reputability. My store also had a complete remodel and it just took away the uniqueness of BBB. Really sad to see it slowly spiral. Got everything for college there & my whole wedding registry was from there. Loved that place!

There was a time I worked there, and the returns that they accepted is partially, probably why this happened. People with wedding registries got cash refunds, they would scan everything at the store and then come in and would return everything …..people would bring in their used kitchen tools , and swap them out for a brand new one. I don’t know if they ever changed the policy, but that was a wild

I was a pretty ideal customer. When they replaced the national brands with their store brands, it killed the experience for me. The variety was gone, replaced by unknown house brands. Good Day Mr. Man. I had 14 years with that Company. An absolute misery in just about every respect. One year they suddenly got really interested in sales and there was all this talk about how the Company was growing and what not. But of all the things I could tell you Mr. Man, the one thing about Bed Bath and Beyond was: Management was TOP HEAVY. I don't think I've ever dealt with such an impossible ratio of Management to Associate. And not even Management in the stores. Just these weird Corporate Managers that would show up. "Who IS that guy?" "I have no idea." "Why are they here?" "Couldn't tell you." Not that it matters. There were some of THE most incompetent, just plain bad and uncaring Management that I've ever had the displeasure to come across. I met people who were Store Managers, I wouldn't trust them with a paper route. I can tell you way more if you would want to hear it Mr. Man. But those are very likely the reasons that I knew that this place was turning into bad news. I only wish that I had left five years sooner than I did. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

It's corporate bureaucracy. When corporations rapidly grow, they overestimate how many corporate positions they'll need, and in turn wind up with redundant managers that wind up trying to justify their unnecessary salaries. These redundant managers wind up traveling around from store to store trying to find something to tinker with, so they can tell their boss, "Hey, I found something super critical that needs your attention! Aren't I important?" even if all they're doing is re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

@@gmanthewinner And there is nothing worse in any work environment than a bad Manager who thinks they are good. They are weak, incompetent, mean spirited, boot lickers, some of them are just plain liars. And yet, they either revel in the fact that they do not know their jobs, or they imagine a store in which everything would be great if only you listened to them. I mean, Associates can be bad too, to say nothing about some Customers. But when a Manager is bad, it just kills everything.

I live in a city of 100,000 people and BB&B was the only place to get the type of goods they sell. They closed here last year, as did Dillards Dept store, our only store with upscale clothing, shoes and home decor. The loss of these stores has really hurt our community. Yes, I could and do, shop online. But when it comes to clothing, it’s a pain in the butt to buy something only to find it doesn’t fit. Then you have to return, rebuy, etc etc. This is a real problem for cities of our size when the next town with good shopping is 2-2 1/2 hrs away.

I work at a company that did the distribution for over twenty stores in the south east and Puerto Rico and we dropped the contract around two years ago. At the time it wasn’t overly apparent the company was in steep decline from our end on a day to day basis because we only had one store closure in nearly 10 years of running the operation, but the contract was always an incredible headache that we were finally relieved to be rid of. I can attest to the supply chain issues during COVID because we operated almost entirely on temp labor for which all were layed off during peak lockdown leaving only us full time employees to run a skeleton crew to process the very limited inbound trucks. Those years working with BBB were some of the worst in my career and I often wonder what it’s like for the boots on the ground these days.

Two things that I think could have helped them are 1. getting in on the online shopping action and 2. making the in-store experience unique from other stores. People don't like to go into stores as much with the ease of online shopping, so you need something fun/unique to stand out. Having something like an in-store cafe or even just a couple of dining tables where you can lay out place settings to see what stuff looks like together. Whatever it is, it needs to be fun so people want to go there.

I love the idea of being able to set out items to see how they look. I will never understand online shopping, only in store will you be able to see, feel, and try out the product, and procure immediately. Due to laws of physics, even Amazon is unable, nor will ever be able, to match immediately.

Our local BBB closed this January. Like Toys-R-Us, years ago it used to be a wonder to go in and find quality merchandise that you just couldn't find elsewhere. After the pandemic though, the store stopped carrying things I was interested in, and when I would drop by, the parking lot was practically empty. Eventually, I stopped even going until mid-January when I saw the "Final Day - Store Closing", and that was that.

I used to work there. They had no shame in telling us that they don't make improvements for employees, only for customers if they complain enough. Daily inventory checks weren't done with handhelds, they were done by printing out piles and piles of paper every day. I hate to think about the amount of money and trees they could have saved by modernizing. Edit: let's make it time and money for the the "fuck a tree" people. 😁 Plus dealing with the papers while doing inventory is physically a pain in the ass. Amazon Prime happened. There were a lot of items I bought for my house at BB&B, but once I started shopping on Amazon Prime I never went back to BB&B. The other competitor stores in my area were either too expensive (Williams Sonoma, Macys or Bloombergs), or only sold cheap quality products (Walmart). Kohls does have have similar price/quality of products to BB&B but you never know what they will have in stock when it comes to home products (so I don't shop at Kohls nearly as much anymore either, almost all my clothes/shoes I used to buy at Kohls).

Something you missed, which could have been a #4 in the list of reasons for the decline, was supplier issues. Even before the turnaround plan of 2019 the company was already behind in its trade payments to suppliers. The addition of the private labels with the associated start up costs exacerbated this. And then they infuriated these suppliers to eliminating their products from future orders. Fast forward to the reversal and the company going back to these companies to again restock the shelves. Guess what the reactions were. So now they have half empty stores which of course leads to further customer dissatisfaction for anyone still shopping there and the cycle of sales drops accelerates. The company has said its sales in the current quarter will be down 30-40% compared to 2022. And 2022 was already 25% below 2021. Those numbers are alarming.

I was working at Christmas Tree Store (CTS) when it was acquired by BB&B, and it felt like a slow drag to death from there. The store had been all about a crazy variety of merchandise to the point where our customers came in almost daily just to see what sorts of nonsense we'd have available. Following the purchase, things became far more routine and "cheap". From an employee perspective, they stopped hiring full-time so they didn't have to provide benefits. The icing was trying to change the name to "And That", which everyone hated. We literally had customers coming in to say there were new stores popping up that were ripping us off because they didn't realize we were now "And That".

Honestly there was never much I went out of my way to shop at BBB for in the first place, but I actively stopped supporting them after the way they treated my sister as an employee. She's an incredibly dedicated hard worker and it didn't take long for them to move her from regular floor worker to working the wedding registry. They kept giving her additional responsibilities without increasing her pay to reflect that. Eventually after fighting for it, they gave her back pay, but still never paid her the full amount they owed her (along with other insulting things like passing her over to hire someone else to be her superior in her department and refusing to let her sit down while filling out wedding registry reminder cards). When she finally reached her breaking point and decided to quit, it suddenly became clear just how undervalued she had been, bc apparently her work actually made a big difference in their registry profits and a regional manager made it clear that her manager needed to try REALLY REALLY hard to get her to stay. She left anyway and pursued a career that pays better than a failing company like BBB ever could 😊

In NYC, you never see the coupons. You’d easily drop hundred of dollars there, and it was still the likely cheapest home goods retailer. (This was before Target moved in.). In the suburbs now, we go much less regularly with alternatives like Target and Costco. You spoke about layout. Don’t underestimate the “racetrack” layout, which encourages you to walk through the entire store on each trip. Having consulted for a home goods catalog years ago, BBB was an excellent merchandiser who educated the consumer. There was lots of signage explaining things like thread count and bamboo vs cotton. This truly helped the consumer justify spending prices higher than competition. Now, having jettisoned Wamsutta for Nestwell, the towel and sheets “aisles” are just depressing. The color spectrum is severely truncated, meaning you won’t find what best matches your decor. Your photos show that those towers of towels are now empty shelves covered up by window shades. Even more depressing, before, the towels that were too tall to reach were actually fake: maybe one towel wrapped around a cardboard facing at the front edge of the shelf. Now they don’t even have enough inventory to fake their merchandising.

However, recently, we were considering places to make our wedding registry, and it made it belatedly obviously how outdated and unpopular the store has gotten. So interesting that there is a Company Man video backing this up now!

I haven't been in one of their stores for many years, i will usually go to Target for the same items but cheaper. I always saw BBB stores as overwhelming with the amount of stock they had, i had a hard time focusing on shopping in their stores, shelves up the the ceiling jammed with more bath towels then anyone person could use, it felt claustrophobic and i didn't want to spend hours trying to find a specific item. Target felt more welcoming and easier to traverse as i would rather get in and get out, plus i could actually focus on what i needed. There is a point where too much stock is a bad thing.

I recall going to BB&B in 2016 and 2018 and finding all kinds of stuff that I wanted I went back in 2022, and there was nothing there that I wanted The selection had changed for the (disastrously) worse I see no reason to go back

My experience here in Canada as well. The transformation was stunning. Most products were the same as could be found at Walmart and way cheaper there. If you throw in Amazon there was no reason to ever shop at BB&B.

I haven't even thought about Bed Bath And Beyond for years. I was given a giftcard for christmas so I went to what I thought was my local store, but it had just recently closed down. So then I drive to the next one around 30 minutes away and they were closing with 10% store-wide discounts. It was about what I expected.

I just (yesterday) discovered that the local BB&B is closing. I am extremely disappointed. Yes, I can buy a lot of what they sell online - but with items that are fabric - (i am specifically interested in refurbishing my bath towels and bath floor rugs) -- online gives one NO idea of texture, quality or an accurate gauge of color.) I went in yesterday and could find nothing in the color I want for the bathroom rugs. Although for the guest bath I did find good choices for a towel set there. So sad. Online, for these sorts of things you will have no concept of texture, feel, and quality. I have no issue buying appliances or other tools on-line - it is just disappointing this is happening. I talked to an employee during checkout - he has no idea what his own future will look like.

Interesting and insightful analysis. My wife and I were occasional but still fairly regular BBB customers. As a fairly savvy consumer and a retired FMCG marketer, I can say that the one thing that pissed us off was how the 20% coupons always seemed to hit our mailbox days *after* we bought something there - to the point where it felt data-driven, not simply coincidental. Then, in BBB's last couple of months, coupons seemed to be in our mailbox twice a week. Our response was "eff off" and I don't miss them a bit.

I have already heard from a few videos that rumors from employees and store managers from several locations have heard from corporate that chapter 7 bankruptcy may be coming so unless some other company comes to save the day. The days for bed bath and beyond are over in my opinion.

It's more likely that they go under and most of their important stock is liquidated off to Amazon to be resold online.

My local bed bath took a huge hit when they remodeled and took away almost 60% of products/brand names and just had a few left. Now it’s just sad seeing a once bustling store empty.

One of my favourite stores back in the day. Even a few years ago when I lived in a remote area for work I was able to buy so much online with free shipping and if anything was damaged or missing their customer service was incredibly pleasant to deal with. Last few years has not been kind to them. I try to go there when I’m looking for something specific but the store is so stupidly overwhelming, no one is ever in there so it makes it super awkward to shop when every worker is looking at you out of boredom (feel like I’m in a ghost town), most of the time what I need is out of stock and everything is so over priced. I only go if I have no other choice or I happen to need something I know they have for sure. They also managed to make online as overwhelming as in store. The most recent things I bought were their exclusive brands but the quality did not last. Really unfortunate to see it go downhill.

I'm glad you mentioned Click right off the bat because Click is the only reason I know the store exists. There's never been one near me. I want to say I've been in one once or twice when I was younger, but the only reason I remember those visits is because I was like "Oh hey! The place from Click!"

By far, my biggest point in annoyance of them going is because they are a specialty store. It's the reason I shopped there, they had unique stuff nobody else had. I'll miss my store in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and I will be even sadder if all the ones around me close!

I used to work here and truthfully, I loved it for a few years. I was treated right compared to other retailers, but the end was rough. For a time, it felt unique and I think that was partly because of the founders. I am going to miss the store, still could find amazing products for dirt cheap even towards the end. The last store that I worked at is one of the stores closing. I will miss it.

I have never been to a Bed Bath and Beyond, but I bet that a lot of people with less money for things around their homes, just get such items at Target, Walmart, Kohls or online. It always seemed expensive to me, anytime I ever looked and saw BB&B online ads I also get the feeling that people would shop at a store like that when they first moved to a new home or bought a house and wanted matching and nice new things. And no one’s doing that anymore, no one can afford a house, no one can afford fancy towels and bedroom sets, and are going to dollar stores for things like soap dishes etc

I like the store, and the non-expiring coupons, but the prices are SO HIGH, that I won't shop there anymore. UNLESS, I need something incredibly specific, incredibly quickly; otherwise, it's Amazon or similar.

Worked there from 2016-2017. In August of 2017, they laid off 14 key holders from my store. The issue is that they focused too much on customer service that they'll rather make the customer happy instead of making profit. People would exploit this. For instance, the return policy was return anything, no questions asked. No time limit, no tags, mostly didnt need a receipt. So essentially, you can just buy 1 thing and exchange it when it was time for a new one. We lost a ton of money that way. Buy a $400 pot and pan set, and you can exchange it for a new one when it gets old and worn. And you can do this indefinitely as long as they still carry the product. People would steal items from the target next door and bring it to us to return and we couldnt do anything about it. I quit shortly after they laid do many managers off. I could tell it was going downhill

Yeah, it’s sad to see them fall this far. I still shop there at times but not as often as I use to. Unfortunately my local store is one of the stores that’s closing soon. Fact is Amazon is easier and more convenient for the majority of items. The thing that always got me to use Bed Bath & Beyond was definitely the coupons and deals and if they didn’t have one I’d check places like Kohls to compare. My hope is they can make a comeback but unfortunately the road ahead for stores like these are difficult right now.

The last time I went to a Bed Bath & Beyond was during Black Friday while the one closest to my father's house was having a store closing sale. I hadn't been to a Bed Bath & Beyond store for some years prior. As for the company, I think it's gonna end up filing for bankruptcy pretty soon and go out of business completely. The damage has pretty much already been done for them.
