I think the very first JaYoe video I stumbled across was the one in which you were switching from Ortlieb to Arkel panniers. I was planning to commute on a recumbent bike, a Cruzbike. Seeing how relaxed you looked while riding along in traffic and talking to the camera, talking about your Bend-It Cycling shorts, it was just so surreal! Bicyclists always look so tense and focused when vlogging themselves but you were just, enjoying the world around you. I have a trike now, too.

This is pretty much the best comparison between panniers I have ever seen. Also, the best introduction to recumbent panniers on the internet. When I bought my panniers I didn't have anything like this, your video will bring purchase advice to many people, I'm sure! Two ideas from my side: 1. On my ortlieb recumbent panniers I always use that rubber strap to keep my raingear (you were mentioning one could put in a bottle). If you roll your rainpants and jacket and put one on each side, you have quick access like you had with the Arkel bags and they are light enough to not get lost. 2. You could use some rugged tape to wrap around your rack to make that fit to the much beefier big clips (I didn't know, Ortlieb had those, I have to admit). Then you won't have to worry about the inserts and can still use the more rugged clips. JaYoe!

raingear is a good idea.yea... the tape could give the clips a bit more grip for sure!

The beefy clips are for 20mm tube diameter whereas the standard ones are 16mm. I think it strange that they don't do inserts for the 20mm clips but if you wrapped some hose around the rack tube it would make the fit better. Thank you for clearing up weather the QL2.1 clips would fit on the QL2 bags.

Very cool to see into your gear choices man. Maybe do one of these every so often when your chilling out at a campsite or something.. maybe a trike walk around update for people who haven't seen your previous ones

We use packing pods inside the panniers. So I have bike clothes in one pod, street clothes in another and wet weather in another. So in one rear pannier I have the 3 pods. If you search you can find the pods in most camping/ travelling stores

I do believe Arkel sells their cam-locking system as an aftermarket option for other pannier makes.

Hello Matt.. Hope all is well with you and your lovely family. Can you tell me the width of the Support Bar on the inside of the Arkel RT-60... I have an unusual rack system on my trike.. (it has two lift handles) on each side. they help me by being able to lift with both hands... Those handles extend out on both sides... The distance between the bars is 13".. (at the level of the cam locks).... I don't think the over all 20" length will be a problem as that will be below the handles.. I'm worried about the width of the Aluminum Support Bar you showed.. :) Can you tell me how wide the bag frame (support bar) is at the level of the cam locks..? Thanks.. When are you coming to Portland..? I see Pat often and he speaks highly of you. My God be with you and your family. Robb

Hey Rob... i am so sorry, but i dont have the bags with me. I am not sure what the measurement is. Arkel is pretty cool, i think you can reach out to them direct.

I have a set of the Arkels that I used on 2 recumbents. I do small coloured waterproof stuff sacks to organize crap and my bags also have rain-covers. I also use Radical banana style bags 2-50 litre on a recumbent, these do have a waterproof liner one can place “inside” each bag but too expensive so I just use my waterproof stuff sack system instead. I was not too keen on the plastic connectors on the Ortlieb’s.

Matt I was thinking about your weight problem (your words not mine) You may have to adjust your boom length a bit to get optimum length for the first while. I gained a few LOL pounds over winter and found my butt size had increased enough to have to add 1/2" to the boom and a couple of chain lengths to get a proper extension on my legs, as you know it can really affect knee strain to have the boom set wrong. Just a thought. Jayoe pal good to see you back.

Great vid. Maybe hold onto the “beefy big” clips and see if some inserts will come out soon or make some(DIY) for better/improved grab. Either way, it’s nice to see ya in good spirits and getting back to triking.

In a worse case scenario is there enough room for 3 or 4 new clips per bag instead of two? That would cut the load on each clip.
@kallkrish6 жыл бұрын
Hi, I think you can use multiple hooks per bag as long as they don’t interfere with the rack structure. That way you can spread the weight and have more stability. Go back to that store! Good luck!
@JaYoeNation6 жыл бұрын
interesting idea... yea could do that.. but the straps would probably wrap around eachother.

I love that cavernous duffle bag style. It's what I have for my touring bike. Smaller but not much. I hate zippers as they can break. If you ever have that issue it can really ruin a trip. I will take flap and buckle every single time. I never had a plastic buckle break on me. Good bags will have nylon or even glass filled nylon buckles. Tough stuff. But I carry cheap spares just in case. I did have one aluminum buckle snap on me so after that I didn't look for metal buckles.
@tonystower14756 жыл бұрын
Just thinking - if you are at all worried that the new clips still might spread just add a couple more so you have four clips per bag and perhaps carry a spare as well.
@timothywcain6 жыл бұрын
Cheap packing cubes from Amazon will solve the duffel bag problem Matt and they also let you get more stuff inside.

Have you considered a velomobile for your trips? The Leiba Cargo would solve all your needs and protect you from weather, everything would fit inside. I understand that it can’t be easily shipped around the world but is something to consider. Plus the aerodynamics are way superior than an open trike.

Inserts and shims often slip & slide around, at least the ones which have come with some of the bicycle lights I've bought. They can make things difficult when trying to tighten things down with a screwdriver and wrench, or fall out and drop/disappear when loosening things. These inserts in your video might be better but a helpful tip I like to use and share is to wrap the bars with layers of electrical tape instead of shimming them.

I have been the Arkel Dolphins, which work well on my ICE Trike, Sprint RS 20". I have used many different panniers and the Arkel's system the best. Why don't you put Arkel rails on your Ortlieb bags. I don't like the big bags either that is why I use the Dolphins. I have managed to put holes in them but I have improved the look of them by fixing them with Gorilla tape. ;-) Oh and I don't typically carry my panniers by the cam handle.
@thatguyonabicycleofconsurv39086 жыл бұрын
Well that's good the clips are working out for you. But when you took all that stuff out of the other bag I didn't really see any compartment other than the ones on the outside and have you expressed that to the company maybe they could make ones with more compartments because I agree that the duffle bag of fact really isn't the greatest thing and they don't even have that cubic inch anymore I think yours is over 4000 cubic inch and is that per bag so it is over 8000 cubic inches if you include both bags because they don't have it anymore they have a 3800 or something like that can't remember no least that's what I'm finding online. Well thank you for getting back with me I appreciate that I know you're probably busy and it what is it you do on the road that allows you to travel so much cuz I'm assuming that I realize that you're married but I'm assuming that you spend much of the year on the road doing whatever it is you do for a living and I'm curious what that might be thank you be safe out there on the road keep the Supple side down.

What's the Ortlieb big pannier named in your video?
@JaYoeNation5 жыл бұрын
its called the ortlieb recumbent pannier
@atomsmasher49195 жыл бұрын
It looks like you're comparing the Ortlieb "QL2" clips to the "QL2.1" clips. The "QL1" clips used a different shim/spacer system, and required a small allen-key to adjust them on the rail. The QL1 and QL2x clips do not fit on the same rails.
