Four years after this video I'm in the market for a used e-Niro and it's a great way to see what are the changes for the MY20 and how to recognize these - this comparison hard to find online. Thank you so much!

That is great to hear! I am glad my older video is still helpful. The e-Niro is an excellent choice, regardless of the year you choose, but be aware that the first model year in Europe saw some countries get the e-Niro with no Kia Connect (UVO) app connectivity, so you may want to look at the 2020 depending on the country you are in.

Thanks for video comparison. Three days ago I bought my 2019 eNiro [white] and had a chance to buy a 2020 eNiro but the 2020 was going to cost me a lot more money. I looked over the cars and saw only the taillights and displays screen as primary differences so I passed on the 2020 and took the 2019. I worried that I had missed something, but your video confirmed there are not many differences. Thanks for taking the time to do these. I appreciate them.

I picked up my MY20 e-Niro yesterday in the Netherlands. For me the biggest differences you did not mention are the 3-phase charging (3 times as fast AC charging) and the new app to control car options from your phone. The MY20 e-niro uses the UVO app and a wireless connection similar to what a Tesla is using.... That were for me the main reasons to opt for a MY20.

Congratulations on your purchase. Here in Canada, and in the US, UVO Intelligence has always been in the Niro EV; I have it in my 2019 and actually have a video about it from last year. Also, in North America we don't have 3-phase electricity which means we don't get the 11kW OBC (onboard charger) that is available in the 2020 European models of e-Niro, too bad for us ☹. That is the only reason I did not mention those items. Thanks for pointing that out though.

Right now I do not know if the core will get updates. I did order the infotainment update from the new Kia Map site because it is now only 30$ CDN + shipping. One thing to note though, since owning my car for just over 1 year, a couple of months ago I noticed that the smart cruise control was drastically improved over night. There was a giant jump in accuracy and lane centering and this makes me wonder if Kia secretly pushes updates for some things.

I have a Niro EV 2019 and follow you from California. Your videos are very informative without being too lengthy. Being new to a completely electric vehicle, I'd like to know about what service maintenance EV's require and how often. I'm use to oil changes, air filter changes, lube, etc. Also thoughts on charging the battery; keeping it fully charged each time or only to 75% unless going on long distance road trip, letting battery run down to XX before charging, downside of using the fast charger regularly, etc. Maybe these could be ideas for future videos.
@EV-olution
@EV-olution 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for following my channel, I really appreciate it and thanks for the compliment 🙂 Up until now I have not covered battery charging habits and maintenance of EVs since there are lots of videos about the subject. I try to make videos that are a little different, or unique, but I suppose that I have enough subscribers asking that I should probably add the topic to my list of videos to make (I am going to need longer days 😉) Regarding maintenance, Kia has a published schedule for the Niro EV and you should verify what Kia states regarding warranty vs maintenance, but with that being said, all EVs in general require very little maintenance. The most important things to do is to have your brakes properly cleaned and lubricated once per year. This type of maintenance can take up to 2 hours and requires disassembly of the brakes at the 4 wheels. It is more critical in locations like where I live due to rain and winter, but still important even in CA since brakes on our cars are rarely used due to the hybrid braking system used (motor regen first, then friction brakes). For the cabin air filter, you can change it yourself in 5 minutes so unless you really don't like doing stuff, I would not pay the dealer, or a garage to change it. Regarding charging your car's high voltage battery, like with any lithium ion battery it is strongly suggested to keep it between 20% and 80% charge. Avoid draining it to 0%, avoid leaving it charged at 100% for any long period of time, and don't quick charge frequently, only when needed. If you follow these rules of thumb your battery will last a very long time. I charge to 90% for regular use, I only charge to 100% if I am going on a long trip the next day, and I only use DCFC (DC Fast Charging) if I need it on a long trip. After 25000km and 1 year my battery SoH (State of Health) is still 100%. I hope this helps.

Thank you very much! That is an interesting idea since the 2020 is supposed to be using the new NCM811 cells. In theory the range and charging speeds should be identical since the battery capacity and onboard charger are exactly the same (along with pretty much everything else).

@@EV-olution not sure if you could compare the 'real world' experience versus EPA data. I'm always anxious that if I buy something so tech heavy, it'll be out of date when the next model comes out
@EV-olution
@EV-olution 4 жыл бұрын
@@arun7kurup Don't let that stop you. I bought my 2019 before it was available, never saw it, tested it, nothing, and it was a first generation. I don't regret it one bit. In the summer I easily get over 400km of range and I do lots of highway driving, use AC, cooled seats, radio, Android Auto, charge my cell, etc. I drive it like a normal car. In the winter, when it is extremely cold (example -25C or -30C) I get around 300km to 320km of range. Nothing in my car has been outdated by the 2020 version and I would not change it even if I was offered a free update to a 2020. If you keep waiting for the next best thing then you will never buy one. It is the same thing as with buying a computer, there will always be a new version, model, technology. If you always wait for the new tech you will never own any tech. 🙂

Excellent video.....I'm currently in the process of getting this car...only doubt is the trimline.... Very nice improvements IMHO. I really like the piano black.....if you don't want fingerprints on it.......don't touch it.... :D Love the new rear lights too, I really prefer the all-red look.... What I really don't like is the blue elements all around on the outside. The very reason to choose the e-Niro over any other EV for me is that it looks like a normal car. I never understood why electric cars had to look weird or even ugly. So, there's no need to "show off" that it's an electric car on the outside. In fact, I always order my cars with the type plates on the rear not-installed....not sure if Kia offers this since I've been a Skoda driver for my last 5 cars.....

Thank you very much, I appreciate it. The trim levels in Europe are different from here, and it changes from country to coutry as well. Here in Canada we get the SX top trim with everything, and there is the "entry" trim EX, but they are hard to get and very rare. In the 2020 a nice update is the fact that it no longer uses an SD card for the nav system and I really like the new 10.25" screen. Regarding the blue trim, it should be fairly easy to wrap those bits in 3M. For the badges, I don't think you can order it without them, but none of them make it obvious that the car is electric; the lower right badge says Eco-Electric, but it is written so small that you have to be standing next to it to read the words. That plus the fact that it's the same badge design as all other Niro versions. It should be easy enough to remove, I had mine replaced at the dealer because mine became tarnished after only 1 year; it was covered under warranty. You are going to love your e-Niro 🙂

I've just purchased a 2019 Kia e-Niro. pre-loved, 11,000 odd miles on the clock. Being delivered on Tuesday. My current vehicle is a Suzuki mild hybrid - and they've SO NEARLY got it right. But close - no cigar, not quite there. It's ALMOST what I want, and yet not quite. So I'm trading up to a Kia plug in hybrid. I haven't seen it yet, just a video, but it looks nice. My previous two vehicles were both Kia Rios, which I loved, but eventually became a bit long in the tooth, and started to require expensive servicing and repairs after ~ 10 years or so. So after a brief flirtation with Suzuki... (OK, my late wife would have said I'm like Chelsea football club, playing away from home... - we were both Chelsea fans) I'm returning to my former love of Kia. Let's see how it goes next week.

@@EV-olution It is a plug-in hybrid PHEV, so it's not self-charging although I understand it has regenerative engine braking. There are plug-in points within 5 miles of me, at supermarkets. That should work well, I can't currently get plug in points at home in my flat, but may be able to agitate for nearer plugin options. I became a bit concerned at rising petrol prices, so decided to go at least electric capable. And I like Kia models a lot, this will be my third Kia.

Thanks for the comparison! Some interesting things I've found about my Niro SX touring 2020: The backup camera is very clear, much easier to see than my wife's 2019 RAV4 hybrid. I really do NOT like the "chrome" trim under the touchscreen... When the sun is high, it reflects straight into my eyes when I'm travelling in the right direction. To the point where I'm considering covering that section of trim with black gaffer tape. I also wish the "auto hold" was programmable and automatic, I guess they didn't want to be too much like Tesla? 😉 Otherwise, I'm very, very happy with the vehicle!

The Niro EV is a great car to look into for your needs. Unfortunately, being in Canada, I don't know about buying from another state, but I do know of some viewers that have done it. The main issue is that any service, or maintenance, would have to be done at the out of state dealership since they are the ones who are EV certified by Kia. Are you part of any Facebook Niro EV groups? I am pretty sure that an answer could be found there.

One thing that's not so much visible on the outside (or the inside) but definitely a change is that the 2020 model has an 11 kW on-board charger, whereas the 2019 has a 7 kW version. I'm not sure if this is true in all markets, but it is in Europe.

The 11kW charger is only available in markets that use 3 phase. Since we don't have 3 phase in North America our cars don't get the faster charger. Thanks for pointing that out.

@@brianfish8269 I ordered mine in September 2019 in The Netherlands, but later the dealer and I found out that the models being delivered in 2020 have the 11 kW charger by default, even if not ordered. It's not an option in our market. In my case the car ended up being about 150 euro more than what's on my order confirmation.

@@ErikGeurts Interesting, thanks for the info. For 150 euro I wouldn't mind, but as I was offered the option to save 500 I took it. I am also keeping my fingers crossed that I can take advantage of the increased government allowance, on EV's, of 7000 euros, up from 6000 euros, on the 1st June, as the car is due the end of July (2020???), again fingers crossed.
@ErikGeurts
@ErikGeurts 4 жыл бұрын
@@brianfish8269 I think the reason it's only 150 euro extra for me was that when I initially ordered it, the 11 kW charger didn't exist (not even as an option). And in the Dutch market, in May 2020, it's not an option at all, the only version being sold is the one with the 11 kW charger. I think that ordering it with an 11 kW on-board charger is smart at 150 or 500 euro. The market value of that will be high if you ever find yourself in a position where you want to sell the car again in a couple of years. Faster charging will have become the norm by then.

Question, I'm considering the 2021 Soul ev or the 2020 Niro ev but I'm in Quebec and the climate can get pretty cold in the winter and toasty at times jn the summer. How does the climate system perform in extreme weather conditions? As well as what kind of mileage hit do you loose in cold weather? The 400+ km drops to what approximately? The blank button could also be the rear fog light/lights. It’s mandatory in Europe to have rear fog on the drivers side. Or some manufacturers will have two for aesthetic looks. But you could be right because I have seen the rear fog light switch also located on the stock. Check your tail lights. Sometimes they will have on them printed rear fog left and rear fog right. Those lights may either be disabled, rewired as a tail light or as a break/emergency break light. One or the other. My x5 has them as emergency break lights. I bought the European light switch and they are now dual purposed on my x5 They are my rear fogs as well as my emergency brake lights. Note: Use them responsibly and only when the weather is adverse. Like to chip in and say I like your review on the Niro EV. I have owned many Hyundai and Kia‘s and currently also own a 2017 Kia Rondo Ex Lux. I’ve been very curious about EV cars. Maybe in two years if the mileage goes up another 200 km in range I’ll might strongly consider picking one up for commuting to work.

Viewers of another video I made, about upgrading the reverse light bulbs to LED, commented that they only had one reverse bulb and the second one was actually a fog light. I was surprised to find out that it was a law in several European countries, not all, but many. Here in Canada they are simply reverse lights. If you are interested in seeing the details up close then this video may be of interest to you: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6WQe6WCptqaaLs As for your requirement for more range in an EV, does your daily commute to and from work exceed 400km? If so that is a long drive. The Niro EV, Soul EV and Kona Electric all have 400km of range on one charge and when you have an EV it can always be full because you charge at home. If you have any questions please let me know and thanks for taking the time to write detailed comments, I appreciate it.

Thank you very much. I owned my 2019 for almost 3 years and never had any issues with the touchscreen. I had the 8" screen since it was the top trim, and it was quick enough, never lagged, and always responded to the inputs. I am not sure what the technology used is, but there was never a point where I had issues and had to think about it. As for the 2020, its screen reacted similarly and had no issues, but my use was limited to the time I spent recording this video since it was another person's car. I have no doubts that the 2020 and newer screens work just as well as my 2019 did. I have not heard of issues. What I can say is thay my new 2022 Kia EV6 touchscreen sometimes lags, which is frustrating, and I am about to perform a factory reset to get it back to how it was when I got it in March 2022.

I have had the Canadian 2019 eNiro model for just over a year. One thing that I would have liked to see was more badging and identification as an all-electric vehicle to help promote zero emission transportation. I see that the 2020 model also lacks visible electric identification badging. Well done video! I am considering buying the Niro EV for my wife but a big question remains over real world highway range. We take a few 600 mile road trips per year and I have not yet found anyone who has done a careful test of the actual range of the car at 70 and 75 mph. Results vary from 200 to 250 miles but the tests are never steady state cruising but always a mix of speeds. Anything you could do would be much appreciated.
@EV-olution
@EV-olution 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much. As for the range test, the biggest issue with a test is that the result will never be the same for the tester and the viewer because of the following factors: 1) Outside temperature (cold, or hot) 2) Weather (rain, snow, wind) 3) Roads (incline/decline, flat, etc) 4) Traffic and more. I drive my Niro EV like a normal car, I have put 23,000km on it since May 2019 and do lots of highway driving, including roadtrips. Driving electric is so much better as long as you have a mindset that things are different. If you expect to drive like a gas car to empty and think you can fill up in 5 minutes then you will not be happy, but if you do a roadtrip and stop for lunch or a pee break, then charge at the same time. I drove 1100km last summer and stopped when I was tired, or needed to eat so I planned my stops at fast chargers. My charging sessions usually finished before I was done eating lunch. For my day to day driving in the summer I usually get about 420km per charge, but I drive like a normal person, not trying to be careful, I use air conditioning, ventillated seats, radio, Android Auto, etc. In a bad case scenario I get 380km, which is the rated range of the car. In the winter when it is extremely cold you can expect 30% to 40% loss in range if you don't have a garage (I don't), but for day to day driving who needs more than 300km of range, plus you charge at home, no trips to the gas station so your car is always full.

I think one of the major differences - at least in Europe - is that the 2019 version has a single phase on-board charger of max 7.4kW and the 2020 version has a three phase on-board charger of 11kW. In public spaces this will charge your battery a lot faster.
@EV-olution
@EV-olution 4 жыл бұрын
That is correct for Europe, but in North America we don't have 3 phase therefore the Niro does not have the new 11kW charging possibility. That is the main reason I did not mention it because here in Canada, both 2019 and 2020 charge at the same rate.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you, my videos are getting a ton of comments and I just saw yours. You can use the left paddle, behind the steering wheel, to bring the car to a complete stop, but you are correct, it is not one pedal driving. I think the Leaf has the best implementation with e-Pedal, and wish it was standard on all EVs. One thing to note if you use the left paddle to stop the car, once the car is stopped the brake lights go out. Ideally you use Auto Hold so when you get to a stop light, with the left paddle to stop, you can hold the brake pedal for 1 second to activate Auto Hold. I hope this helps.

Thanks for your question. When I wanted to change over to electric there were very limited choices since it was mid 2018. The Kona Electric was one, and the Tesla Model 3 was the other, but the Telsa not being a hatchback would have been too much of a compromise on my needs so I eliminated it even though it is beautiful, powerful, and has autopilot. I had actually put a reserve on a Kona Ultimate, but found out that Kia was going to come out with the Niro EV so I cancelled my Kona and reserved my Niro EV because the Niro is a longer vehicle with more rear passenger room and more trunk space. Today there is the Hyundai Kona Electric, Ioniq Electric, the new Ioniq 5, as well as the Kia Niro EV, Soul EV and the up and coming EV5 (also known as Imagine or CV). The VW ID4 and ID3 are interesting, but VW has left a bad taste in my mouth from the diesel scandal and they are so new to the EV market that they have not proven their technology yet. There is also the fact that the VW ID3 and ID4 are not targeting EV owners, but gas owners, and the performance leaves a bit to be desired regarding accelleration. The Tesla Model Y is attractive, but the price is up there and the fit and finish issues would worry me. The Audi product has poor efficiency and it priced far too high in my opinion. As of today, if I were to change, I would stick with what I know to be good and opt for the Ioniq 5, or Kia EV5 which should be released in a few months, or the existing Soul EV or Niro EV. I hope this helps.

I wonder what is going to happen with the e-Niro when the new ‘clean sheet’ EV from Hyundai arrives next year? Photos of the camouflaged test cars and the concept car on which it is based suggests it will be a similar size to the Niro. A Kia derivative of the platform has been promised. The 800v architecture on this car sounds interesting, capable of using the Ionity chargers (up to 350 kW) we are seeing crop up here in France and all over Europe. Once this new car is out there and if it is at similar price points to Kona/Niro will those nameplates continue as hybrids and PHEV only? By definition the Kona/Niro are compromised designs having to accommodate an ICE in most versions of the car. The French government last week announced €8.8 bn support for electrification, the 'bonus ecologique’ has risen from €6,000 to €7,000 on an EV and I believe €2,500 on a PHEV. New car buyers spending more than €18,000 (most cars) will get €2,500 further incentive if you buy an EV and hand in your old petrol (older than 1997) or diesel (older than 2001) for scrapping. This month we will see France reach what I call the ‘magic 1%’...with 350,000 EV’s on the road here...so at the bottom of the S-curve. Rapid acceleration from here!

I am pretty confident that the new EV will be much more expensive due to it being AWD and a completely new architecture. There will probabaly be a transition period where the Kona and Niro will be the "cheap" EVs, the new one(s) will be for a more upscale market, and once the economies of scale kick in then the new EV only products will replace all older versions. This is just a wild guess. As for the incentive program in France, it is amazing. We have a very good program here in the province of Québec, but I like the idea of a bonus for scrapping your old car. I think it would make more people convert here. Congratulations to France for the 1%, that is excellent news!

@@EV-olution That makes sense. The Niro model (hybrid) dates from 2016 so I guess they will keep the shape until perhaps 2023. I do hope they can produce more as the waiting lists for them in the UK and here are very long. In the future when most cars on the road are EVs the e-Niro could be seen as an early electric classic. A friend of ours near here went electric in 2017, trading in an old diesel Volvo for a Hyundai Ioniq. He got the €6k bonus but another €4k for scrapping his diesel!..He is now 50,000 km in on the Ioniq and although it has a limited range it does pretty much all he needs it to do. Love the channel!

Externally the 2019 and 2020 EV version of the Niro, in Canada and the US, are the same except for the tail lights being the new design (same as those on the 2019 EX trim in Canada). The external changes for 2020 that you refer to are for the hybrid versions, not the EV. The top trim Niro EV in Canada has all LED lights in both 2019 and 2020, this is why I did not mention it in the video, they are the same. Technically they 2019 and 2020 EV are the same, except with the possibility of the battery cells being different and using the new NCM811 chemistry, but I have no way of validating, or confirming so it is not something I could comment on. The only technical difference between 2019 and 2020 is for the European versions where the 2020 gets an 11kW on board charger, but since this does not apply in Canada and the US I did not mention it. Essentially the Canadian and US Niro EV for 2019 and 2020 are the same except for the changes mentioned in the video.

So I can save a lot of gas money on a EV, but... Here are the queations: Will i be able to use the car over a periode of 6 years(300000km/186500mi)? Are ther any use cases for "High milage" batteries? on Niro EV? How long can a Niro EV battery last, in km/miles? For info, i live in a temperate climate, winter here is around minus 6 celcius (if any winter at all), summer is plus 25-30 celcius (if we are lucky) Best regards
@EV-olution
@EV-olution 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! You are in the perfect situation for an EV because your annual mileage is high, you intend to keep the car a long time and your winters are mild. Your annual savings compared to an equivalent gas car will be huge. As for battery life, the Niro EV (e-Niro) has liquid thermal management as well as a good history for batteries because Kia/Hyundai have had the Ioniq Electric out for a longer time that the Niro and show no issues. As for battery duration, the Kia warranty is many years long in all countries and it has been proven many times that the cars will last for hundreds of thousands of km. You can do a search for 1 million mile Tesla, there are a few examples, here is a 1,000,000km Tesla: electrek.co/2019/11/30/tesla-model-s-1-million-km/ I actually just had a post pop up in Québec Facebook group that said the taxi company had accumulated 160,000km in 1 year on two EVs, a Bolt and a Niro EV. Battery degradation on quality EV batteries is present, but not high. I hope this helps.
@MrVegasoul
@MrVegasoul 4 жыл бұрын
To extend the life of battery, you need to minimize full charge and full discharge. 100% charging alway may not great for the battery life. Just keep the battery below 90% during normal usage and apply 100% charge in case of long distance driving. 100 ~150 times a year will be a rational limit for the full charge.

So I picked up a Kia Niro EV 2019 base trim (EX) and it was described with the winter package (heat pump + battery warmer)... so your video shows the heat pump option under the hood.. is that the smaller black rubber cover over it, next to the windshield wiper fluid box? And the right-side with the blue antifreeze you call it... isnt that also used as coolant for the main battery (liquid-cooled 64kWh battery) and that needs to be maintained/refilled periodically? If so, that is new info to me, since I always thought the liquid was inside the battery chamber itself self-contained and no re-fill on it.. hmmm...
@EV-olution
@EV-olution 4 жыл бұрын
I posted a picture on my Facebook page for you so you can see what is what. The heatpump is on the upper left side of the engine bay and has a plastic cover over it. Also, all good EVs use antifreeze for thermal management of the battery, the motor and the inverter, and all of these things are connected via tubes and pipes that are paths to circulate the antifreeze and include the plastic bottle under the hood. Just like with any car that uses antifreeze there is the plastic bottle to be able to see the level of antifreeze and maintain it if required. In the 2020 the antifreeze is blue, but has nothing to do with windshield washer fluid. In my 2019 the antifreeze is green and located in the same bottle as the 2020. In the image I posted for you I point out the location of the windshield washer fluid, it is on the left side of the engine bay. facebook.com/evolutioninevitible/

In North America we do not have 3 phase electricity so the 2020 has 7kW maximum like the 2019.

Look for very high lumen output led bulbs. At least 400 to 500 lumen output or more. They have to flash yellow/amber. The led must not be coated. I found the coated ones are flashing white light through a yellow coating and flashing a reddish orange. The yellow/amber led bulbs will flash yellow/amber right through the red lenses. I did this with my 2010 VW Jetta tdi and my 2012 BMW X5 35d. You keep the factory lenses but in stealth have amber/yellow flashers. You can do it with green leds. But I find them harder to buy. The green turns to amber through red lenses. Mk IV Jetta’s filament bulbs were encased in a green sleeve flashing though a almost Red lense taillight. Check them out at the wrecking yard and see what I mean.

@@AzizIzgin your English is just fine 😎. I should have specified that the Niro EV is limited to 77kW maximum charging speed by its onboard hardware. This is why you want to at least use a 100kW DCFC station, to be able to get the maximum speed. If you were to use a 50kW DCFC you would be limited by the DCFC and stuck at a maximum charging speed of about 48kW. Charging in the Niro from 20% to 80% takes about 40 minutes on average, there is no way that someone gets it done in 20 minutes; 30 minutes may be more like 33 or 35 minutes if they have optimal conditions. I am not sure what you mean by battery status, but you can see the % of charge, power consumption, and range left in km or miles, so you know when you need to charge. It is far more simple than some people make it out to be, but it is more complex than filling with gas.

My Niro EV, with 1 year of use and 23,000km is still at 100% state of health. The Niro EV has liquid thermal management of the battery, like most other manufacturers other than Nissan. The reason your Nissan Leaf battery is dropping is because of the poor choice Nissan made about the battery not having any thermal management. Even today the 2020 Leaf+ with 62kWh battery still has no thermal management. Heat is the enemy of any battery, but Nissan chose to save money and keep profits up.

I have a question if’s upgraded in 2020 niro motor bearing?

It depends on when the car was made and the batch, but in general the 2020 mostly had the original motor and reduction gear. It is important to note that my 2019 had the original parts and after 3 years and 58,000km I had no issues.
