I really appreciate the amount of work that went into making this video. Top level content! For myself, I decided that I would skip this generation from Sony, mainly because of the design and a slightly less comfortable fit than the xm4, so I'm looking for alternative headphones. Thanks for the comparison!

For me, I repear, for me, I enjoy the bass of the 1000X series but the high frequencies (I think) bother my ears a lot, can't stand them for some reason, the 1000X series sound alright but are not gentle to my ears.

@@elmaster6207I thought I might be hearing things, but what you stated is also the case for me. Especially those high frequency sounds are quite tiring and demanding which is not the case for Technics. Will possibly go with Technics then as I am looking for nice headset.

I had the WHXM4 (used ones; returned) and the Technics EAH-A800 (ANC was faulty after 1 year and 4 months of usage, got them repaired though, but the ANC was still faulty and the headphones sounded like a cheap one after the repair). There is one or maybe two no-nos for the Technics: 1. while the ANC is good (a bit less than the XM4s) but if you don't listening to music do not walk with them. The bounce when your heel touches the ground get enhanced by the ANC and you hear a bad bounce-like hit sound - with louder music it is counterable, but with quiet passages it is quite noticable. 2. they are really creaky and I don't mean what is shown in this video. It is hard to describe but sometimes when the headphones move in their hinges it sounds like plastic hits on plastic that gets transfered to the speakers - like it is missing a spacer or something in between the hinges. The thing about 2. is it seems removable/repairable/fixable. Because after the repair I didn't noticed this effect anymore even if I shaked my head like headbanging or moving around. Yet I can't even answer what was actually done for the repair. The reciept says 'changed headphone unit'. This could mean I got another unit with my cushions, box etc. Or they actually opened them, changed the unit and closed them. So 2. could be either my first unit was faulty at first place or they fixed it while they had opened them - one thing that could lead to latter is there are people who had tje same issue.

What's crazy is the price different in my country between the Technics A800 ($225 USD converted, on sale) and the XM5 right now ($425 USD), almost half the price. Is it a no-brainer to go with the Technics then? Even over the XM4s (which are around $250 USD)?

I still attest that the Sony xm2’s were the best sounding version with subtractive eq adjusting and it’s tight clean bass boast. I Tryed both the xm3’s and xm4’s. Very very muddy low end that I couldn’t eq out for the life of me. I now own 3 pairs of xm2’s. I know how to achieve the desired response with a parametric eq wired in. I use them as studio headphones for both recording and mixing. Yes. They need eq but I get better mixs with them than my other so called “ studio “ headphones. So. Yeah. lol

Love the humour, spot on 🙂 I have the Sony WF1000XM4 earbuds which I've been using for well over a year now, and they are absolutely outstanding - love them, and that's why I was seriously considering the WH1000XM5 to replace my old Logitech headset - but I'll be getting the Technics, mostly because they seem to rate really highly, and I can get them at 40% off RRP due to my contacts at Panasonic - probably would have got the Technics top of the line earbuds as they also seem to be rating well, but at the time the WF1000XM4's were the highest rated earbuds and Panasonic/Technics had nothing even close to them. Really happy to see Panasonic are really pushing hard to make Technics a real challenger in the higher end area again.

Out of the box, it is true that the Technics has a bass sound that would feel a bit anemic for a bass-head. That said, I prefer that well balanced with clear mids and highs as a baseline, because the sound profile is highly customizable if you know how to use parametric equalizers thanks to a ridiculous frequency range. I found that the Technics can handle subwoofer level frequencies smoothly while still preserving the clarity of the mid and highs, but again, you need to turn off all sound optimizations on the headphones and phone first to get a baseline, then tweak with an equalizer app. I used the paid PowerAmp player which comes with the right EQ profiles for these headphones.

This Panasonic Technics A800 has very good sound and ANC and it's general volume and bass volume is much stronger and powerfull compared to Sony MX4 or Bose QC45. But to listen my favorite music genre electronic music and techno i prefer to use the Panasonic RB-M700B because they have somethning the A800 and other expensive head phones on the market does not have at the moment: A Bass reactor vibration system ! I really love the bass reactor vibration system very very very much !!!! It feels like you have a 2.1 subwoofer hifi system. Panasonic Technics A800, Sony MX4, Bose QC45 feels more like an 2.0 weak bass hifi system without any subwoofer. For a very very very noisy ambient or music without any bass (for example old music) the A800 is the best. So I change my headphones depending on the situation. I use public transportation and have a very noisy neighbor that is the reason I own the Technics A800 and the Bose QC45 (only to watch TV and video games but not music). For music I use my 3 pairs of Panasonic RB-M700B. I hope Panasonic will continue to offer and develop headphones with bass reactor vibration system because I can't listen to techno and electronic music on head phones without a bass reactor anymore. The sony Sony MDR-XB950N1 Extra Bass head phones from 2017 have a bass reactor vibration system (my first head phones i had with a bass vibration system) but the new Sony WHXB910NB Extra Bass from 2021 don't has a bass vibration system anymore imo.

I feel a lot of points were given for features that are less relevant... Of course what's relevant for me is not necessarily relevant for someone else, but it seems that prime aspects like sound quality and comfort should perhaps be weighter stronger than most of the other points. And I'd like to see some discussion on how usable various button and touch features are in practice when using the headphones out and about in daily life, how useful are all the different ANC and transparency modes, how quickly do you actually pick the right one for a situation without first having to find the app, navigate to the right place in the app, etc. Without that context, the scoring and comparison becomes a lot less meaningful when this kind of features weights as much as sound quality or comfort -- perhaps even heavier because the number of points given for ANC or controls related features, vs the number of points for sound quality of comfort.

So I have both pairs of headphones and I really have issues with both of them. I will just tell you my main issue with both of them. With the technics a800 there is a really horrible white noise when you try to use these headphones while riding in your car with the windows down it's so bad that I almost sent them back. It's very disorienting. Also when making phone calls sometimes there is this weird vibration in the ear cup that is very hard to deal with. It's weird but if it wasn't for the good microphones and also the functionality that allows you to suppress more background noise I would have sent these headphones back. As far as the Sony xm5s similar issue with noise cancellation. While the windows are down driving on the highway the noise cancellation has a shift. Also speak to chat is a piece of junk. Lastly, I've had an awful experience with the touchpad. The xm4 by comparison was much better. These headphones are definitely not worth $400. On a positive note, I do like the sound that I get from both headphones. With the 800s I think it's better when I use the equalizer. The microphones are real good for both. Personally I like the design of the technics. The Sony's look cheap

BIG COMPARISON (NEW MARKET AND OLD ONE): Panasonic Technics A800 (owner) vs Sony MX4 (tested 7 days) vs Bose QC45 (owner) vs Panasonic RB700 (owner 5x) vs Sony MDR-XB950 (Ex-Owner) vs Sony WHXB910N (tested) : Every headphone has its weaknesses and its strengths : The Panasonic Technics A800 has very good sound and ANC and it's general volume and bass volume is much stronger and powerfull compared to Sony MX4 or Bose QC45. MX4 and QC45 are pretty the same in sound and ANC. QC45 has better software than MX4. The ANC of the Panasonic Technics A800 is much better than on Bose QC45 (And a lot of people say the QC45 has a little bit better ANC than MX4, so that means A800 is the best on market now) only exeption heavy vibrations from steps or public transportation... The panasonic ANC has problems with that... The ANC of the RB700 is worse but not that much worse. And when ANC is deactivated the RB700 has the best overall sound imo ! The RB-M700B is the onyl one you think you have a subwoofer ! That's because it has a spring vibration system (bass reaktor)... To listen my favorite music (genre electronic music and techno) and War games sound with a lot of bassy explosions I prefer to use the Panasonic RB-M700B. I really love the bass reactor vibration system very very very much !!!! It is the only one that feels like you have a 2.1 subwoofer hifi system. On the others new on market you thnink you have a bass weak 2.0 system. I have a total of 5x RB-700's to be sure i got great music hp for next 10 years. Because I live at to places i want minimum 4 head phones. So this matches nicely. I hope Panasonic will continue to offer and develop headphones with bass reactor vibration system because I can't listen to techno and electronic music on head phones without a bass reactor anymore. The Sony MDR-XB950N1 Extra Bass head phones from 2017 have a bass reactor vibration system (my first head phones i had with a bass vibration system) but the new Sony WHXB910N Extra Bass from 2021 don't has a bass vibration system anymore imo. I use public transportation and have a very very very permanent noisy neighbor that is the reason I needed something more than the RB700. I use the Bose QC45 (for public transportation) and the Panasonic Technics A800 for watching TV or silent video games at home when the neighbour is very loud.

BIG COMPARISON (New and old ones): * Panasonic Technics A800 (owner) vs * Sony MX4 (tested 7 days) vs * Bose QC45 (owner) vs * Panasonic RB-M700BE (owner 5x) vs * Sony MDR-XB950 (Ex-Owner) vs * Sony WHXB910N (tested) : Every headphone has its weaknesses and its strengths : The Panasonic Technics A800 has very good sound and ANC and it's general volume and bass volume is much stronger and powerfull compared to Sony MX4 or Bose QC45. MX4 and QC45 are pretty the same in sound and ANC. QC45 has better software than MX4. The A800 software is in the level of QC45. The ANC of the Panasonic Technics A800 is much better than on Bose QC45 (And a lot of people say the QC45 has a little bit better ANC than MX4, so that means A800 has to be the best ANC on market at the moment) only exeption heavy vibrations from steps or public transportation... Imho sustainbility should go to the headphones with the most battery life (a800). In my mind the impact on planet is higher on fast consumable product.

Guys, suggest you include an image of an binaural mic in every of your thumb pic so more viewers will pop in. I'm sick of those reviewers (a lot of them) who only do a mic test and call it a day.

The XM5 sound amazing but their build is full of rubbish. I have broken 3 XM5 and 2 XM4 on the stem above the right earcup. Luckily I bought the insurance when I bought them on Amazon and I was refunded the amount. All the headphones broke a few months after purchase and I made sure to remove them gently with both hands when I had finished using them. I will NEVER buy another XM5 or XM4 again. I have many other headphones from 1More, Soundcore, Ear Fun, TOZO that have never broken. Last week I used the Soundcore Q20+ and mowed the lawn. I could hardly hear the lawn mower. Why spend $ 400 when I can spend $ 40 and get similar noise cancelling and audio?

Well, I heard what you said and then heard the sound samples, which totally contradicted your comments. Technics became sucked out in the middle and disjointed from the bass and treble. Sony, the voices and main instruments came into focus where the Technics smeared across the soundstage. Can’t understand your comments! Sony win!

sony's scores are far-fetched. By the sound of technics 3 heads higher. It sounds very good in a binaural test, the original and the technics sound almost the same, and sony is just terrible.

I know nothing about the Technics, but the Sony XM5 is not a GOOD 🎧 !! - It is, actually, WORSE than the XM4 ! - With the XM5 Sony has some-how, managed to preserve the "sound quality" of the XM4, with CHEAPER investment into the product. I do realize that quite a few bloggers do depend on companies to send them MORE for "testing", and so many can't be 100% honest. There is also, an effect of social pressure : if 10 bloggers have declared a product as GREAT, the rest, as a herd of 🐏🐑🐏🐑, FOLLOW, even if the reality does not go "hand in hand" with the declared statement 🤷🏻‍♂️
