Commenting to bump your alg, you put out some great stuff Mr Sutton you're very informative, your erring on the side of caution, and not using conjecture to speak "definitively" on issues is much appreciated, and sorely needed across the platform right now.

Perhaps the operators of Houthi drones have to stay close to activate previously waypointed drone boats and also to target and waypoint from other observations. Once the waypoint is good enough they can let the gyro do its work and drive the drone the rest of the way. It is an interesting system where it is vulnerable to jamming but only in the middle of operation. Its ins to travel long distance and ins at final approach. Evolutionary adaptation to the signal environment lives in i think. I expect many combat drones will work this way demonstrated at sea in the future, with signals being either high speed data control or updating ins and mission packages at brief interludes that can be tactically arranged to accommodate the signals environment. Afaik this is consistent with development in land drones and air drones. But I think here on the open sea, now, its being engineered into a truly robust future architecture.

Very interesting, especially when ot comes to the Houthis' versions that are very ad hoc. The point about inertial guidance for larger naval targets is something very interesting in this application, especially after seeing it be so unreliable as a secondary guidance system for spoofed loitering munitions and other bombs or land.

USN is already upgrading it's Mark.38 to mod_4, which replaces the 25mm Bushmaster with the 30mm Mk.44 Bushmaster II specifically for C-UAS/USV/UUV as they're capable of ABM which is essential..! Most newly built/designed Naval vessels are being equipped with at least 1 ABM capable Autocannon (typically 30 or 35mm Bushmasters) and/or 1 or more DEW's (Laser/Dazzler/Both) of anywhere from ~50-150 kw for C-UAS, up to 300 kw to 1 mw for Missile Defense...

I've been curious, as most of the inner parts of these things are off the Aliexpress shelf, does China start making sure shipments to Ukraine have issues, or do they want Russia to lose more, afraid to hurt their sales, some combination, etc... And also, are the Houthis actually building their drones or are they being sent as DIY packages from Iran?
@karl0ssus15 ай бұрын
The Russians don't have a lot of influence in China, and there is speculation that the very public Russian alignment with North Korea has annoyed the CCP, so it's not all that likely that China would be trying to cut the flow of parts to Ukraine. They're probably all bought through intermediaries anyway, to protect against that sort of basic interference

i feel like it would matter more what the individual companies think; they can probably do a lot that the government doesn't see. those companies probably care the most about profit but who knows...maybe i'm just being pessimistic. I suspect the CV is identifying "a large object that's in between the sky and the sea (two large chunks which each have rather similar properties)". That would be the main filter, which is why the explosion is being tracked. The tracking may merely indicate it's trying to establish if the object it sees is a ship or not. Without seeing a full video, hard to say - but a full video would also provide an adversary with ideas to confuse the algorithm being used, so 🤷🏻♂️

The one used by the Houthis uses the signal directly. It does not use the Starlink satellite. This marine drone that Ukraine uses has a long range. Ukrainian drones are better because they use Starlink satellite signals

Is there any chance that the Houthi "targeting point" is actually being added to the video after the event (photoshop, etc.) to make them appear more sophisticated than they actually are?
@csr70805 ай бұрын
Basic computer vision algorithms are really really easy to set up though, are available off the shelf, and don't need all that much computing power either. So I don't think it's that unlikely they might be at least trialling systems like that, though of course you can always just run it on videos after the fact and pretend it was done in real time.
