I saw these pens on Wish.com for incredibly cheap, and my curiosity got the best of me. I just had to know what sort of pens they were selling for so little, it seemed impossible. It turns out they feel like the McDonald's HappyMeal toys of pens, but they do write lines!

I have this cheap chinese pen, probably not a knockoff, just a cheap pen. I've had it for years and recently i have been using it for stippling and it is absolutely amazing. Its supposed to be a 0.5 but i doubt it, its much thinner.(thinner than a 0.2) I just wanted to share. Cheaper products can be good too Edit: im not talking about a fountain pen here. Just like a... "liner" type of pen.

I have buyed an expensive fountain pen but I was not really generous to buy nice ink. I buyed cheap chinease ink of 1€ bottle. Then for some time I was so disappointed because it taked a lot of time to the ink to come out and when I was writing fast it stopped. I was thinking this pen sucks! But then I asked myself... what if the ink sucks? I buyed English ink this time ( about 5€ the bottle). You wouldn’t believe the difference...suddenly the ink was not interrupting and I was writing all the time....and thinking what a moron I was... I buyed a 200€ fountain pen and ink of 1€. Sometimes cheaper doesnt work with fine mechanisms. But I use the cheap ink for a pen without fountain( feather) like in the old times. There you fill no difference at all.
@hxsm8090
@hxsm8090 3 жыл бұрын
@@adriangrigore228 the cheap ink is what people use generally for dipping. It doesnt have to flow well through the mechanism, so no nitty gritty engineering. just need to flow on a nib. If by some reason you buy an expensive indian ink, you would find the case is the same with the cheap ink, even tho it's more expensive. just because the lubrication and the pigment is more concentrated.

i use the Jinhao 250 as my daily writer for university, it hasn't failed me yet in the three years that i've used it. The nib does wear out after around a year and does needs replacement, but that may be due to how much I use it. The nib replacement is quite cheap and can be done yourself. The piston consistently works and the pen doesn't get gummed up if you take care of it and clean it every once in a while. I think it is a great pen considering the cost. :) hope this helps anyone who is interested.

@@BloodSprite-tan Nibs ARE supposed to last the life of the pen if it's a fantastically expensive one, or for way longer than one year if it's a cheaper pen. The nib needing replacing after one year points to very thin, flimsy metal used in the Jinhao's construction.

@@BloodSprite-tan "Iridium point Germany" is only a marketing ploy these days. The most expensive metal you'll get on high end pens will at most be a minute percentage of gold or rhodium, not iridium or osmium as you're led to believe. Well, Big brands spend time and money on designing new pens. They need to have good quality if they want to have a good name associated with their brand. Of course they have a profit margin, but that is the same for every big brand in almost every category of sales. Big brands use gold nibs, which cost more than steel nibs and the pens are often handmade. Besides all of that, they still have a big margin as you said, but it is a little more complicated than just a huge margin.

Most knock offs are assembled in the same factory that assembles the "real product. " You can go to a factory yourself and you can buy real products (without the logo) for like 1/10 the price. Sometimes as little as 1/20 the price. Some people buy Jinhao pens for like 10-20 pennies each, and then sell each pen on American websites for like $5-$10-$20.
@XiaoFeng895

The reason many people can buy Jinhao pens for 10-20 pennies is because most of the cheap pens is manufactured by machines and that causes the pens to become extremely cheap.

So a long term review on the knock off lamy safari. I bought three immediately after Peter posted this video. Of the three, one was missing the converter out of the box, another leaked so bad from the first time I filled it that it went straight into the trash (Seriously... It leaked insanely bad), and the third worked flawlessly. I actually still use the third one to this day and keep it in my backpack. I'm in nursing school and have to write a LOT. I fill it on average 1 to 2 times per week. My point is, the one lucky one has really held up. I use my Kaweco Sport even more though and it just feels nicer somehow... There's just something probably placebo effect-y about it maybe, or maybe it's the subtle little things like the logo on the cap or the engraving on the nib of the Kaweco... I don't know, but again to be fair one out of the three El cheapo pens still writes great and doesn't leak. Take this for what it's worth and enjoy.

I would say that one big problem that gets almost always overlooked in review is the quality control. Lamy pens -as much as I don't personally like them- are known for their extensive quality control that goes as far as writing tests before sending the pens out. Quality control ensures that you will always get a perfectly good pen. By contrast, when buying a Chinese pen like a Hero 616 (which is a knock-off of the Parker 51), your best bet is to buy a bundle of ten and then get rid of the ones that don't work properly. It's a huge hassle, and generally a cheap pen like that requires a few other tweakings (for example sanding out protruding parts of the handle caused by the low quality of the molding process). Then, there is the issue of unforeseen design flaws that only become apparent with time and use. What do you think of ink actually leaking from the top of the cap because the cap is an assembly of three parts that can loosen with use? These problems gets overlooked because most reviewers only take one look instead of using the pen for a few months.

What i've seen is that people tend to handle cheap pens with (way) less care and then complain they break easily or have problems, while the more expensive pens are handled with care and are held in an ebony case with damascus hinges forged in the moonlight of the 5th chinese year and lined with silk of a thousand caterpillars. That's just not fair in my opinion. Most of the 'expensive' stuff we buy is only expensive because the shop owner wants to make money.
@ChozoSR388
@ChozoSR388 6 жыл бұрын
Indeed, Noedell, you can't just beat something that costs less to death only to turn around and say it's just not as high quality. Treat the cheap-o thing as you would the more expensive option, then make an informed judgement after that.

Caution is always good to have. I speak from personnal experience as my sister had a problem with eBay, where the seller disappeared and she didn't receive the product, and ebay only gives you 30 days for refunding and to solve your problems, after 30 days they will not even try to solve your problem. And Aliexpress works in a manner similar to eBay, where anyone can sell through their platform and naturally their focus is on selling you stuff to get their profit, and helping you later if something goes wrong isn't the first of their concerns, therefore I recommend caution when utilizing sites like those

Yeah, I really agree with your sentiment. I've had a Lamy Vista (same design as the safari, just clear) for maybe 6 years now and it writes well, the pen is still in great shape. But I've also had a couple jinhaos, wing sungs, and moonmans - none were knockoffs (they were original designs) but they were still cheap. I mean, they *wrote*, and pretty well, but within a few weeks the plating began to wear off and the finish began to chip on the jinhao, and the nib on the moonman sprung after nothing as it appears the knockoff lamy did in this video a bit. Still, I would recommend some more expensive chinese pens like the wing sung 601 and 698. More expensive, but made with better materials. Though it's best to save up and get something better like a lamy or whatever that you can really use for life. Thanks for the great video as always. :)

Nice review! The thing with the cheaper knock offs is that you have to use them pretty consistently to get the most out of it. If you leave them sitting around for a few weeks because you’d rather use a different pen, then the cheaper material of the knock off pen will clog up and possibly rust/deteriorate. It’s harder to restore them because the nibs aren’t meant to separate from the body and the material they’re made out of aren’t very durable. But hey, that’s just what I've experienced. :)

I have a few expensive fountain pens and honestly the pen I always find myself using the most is the Pilot Varsity which is a throwaway/disposable fountain pen. They cost about a dollar a piece depending on the amount you buy at one time.

The biggest problem with the Jinhao 250, and Jinhao in general, is essentially the quality control in manufacturing. I've bought 3 of that same pen, the Jinhao 250, 1 for myself and 1fir each of my 2 Daughters, and one caps securely and posts securely & the other two either cap very loosely or do not post securely at all, and it's exactly the same pen model. In the same way, one writes very smoothly, 1 clogs repeatedly & the other needed to have the nib worked to line the tines up better. So in essence you do get what you pay for w/ these cheap Chinese pens. I also don't think of them as drawing implements they're much more for writing, though you can certainly sketch with them, and after all you are getting what you pay for. Great review, thanks!

I used fountain pens at work for over 30 years. They generated a ton of curiosity from coworkers who never used one. I started handing out pilot varsities to people who wanted to try one. I didn't want a RH person using one of my personal pens because I write LH and it takes a while to get the nib broken into your writing style. I think that for a throwaway, the varsity is functions very well. Ink stained fingers are now a common sight at work because a lot of my peers have converted. I wonder if I should try to bring back the pocket protector?

That jinhao was my first pen! I’ve had it for 2ish years now and I still use it sometimes. It dries out after a couple days of no usage so I have to dip it in water for a bit to get the ink flowing but overall it has help up really well. I take it apart sometimes easily to clean too. Love how it takes standard international cartridges. The grip is just a bit slippery for me though. What’s kind of cool is that some parts are made of brass, so you can see a little bit of brass patina near where the body screws into the section.

@O K Yea it definitely depends on how you want to use it. Comparably, one of the most utilized ballpoint pens for professionals is the dirt-cheap bic pen that costs the same as kids coloring pencils.. Price doesn't have to mean poor quality, and sometimes even a big name doesn't have to invoke big pricetag either. In the end the artist makes the work, and the pen only build on your natural abilities, and many of the cheap products can go a long way before they reach their limitations.

One thing I've noticed with cheaper fountain pens is that they don't work well over time. My Kaweco works great whenever I pull it out, even if it's been sitting for months. With knockoffs, I've noticed that I have to do a bit of "maintenance" after they've been sitting for a bit.

Think about why these pens might be so cheap. The working conditions at the factory, the safety standards of the materials, the blatantly stolen engineering and design, the security of their website. I don't know 100% what is going on, but because they write fairly well it's very suspicious. The cost is getting cut somewhere, and not just cause it feels a little cheaper.

And you think that products which are original are produced in factories which are fair and secured? it must be nice to live in that world where you live. Most products are relatively manufactured for pennies you pay the over price for the overhead, the beautiful package, advertising, the celebrity endorsing it, and of course the vacation house of each of the CEO and members of the board, etc. Some companies are the ones creating these so called knock offs to then resell them then they complain, but have you heard them do something about it, really do something, have you ever wonder why?

One thing I like is that the Wingsung and the Jinhao pens come standard with the converter were as the Lamy it is extra.

The problems I've found with knockoff fountain pens usually come up with longterm use. The lids tend to start falling off after a couple months or the nibs come loose or they develop leaks. None of the knockoffs I've had lasted more than a few months before they had to be tossed. That said, they tended to work well for that first month or two.

I am a fountain pen user for a very long time. One suggestion for your retractable piston filling would be 1. Don't dip your nib into the ink to fill it. Remove the piston and dip it into the ink. Or 2. Use a syringe to fill the piston once it is retracted. It really saves on messes. I have expensive pens, I have antique pens and frequently use knock offs with good results.

are you looking for form or function? that's another consideration. I mean Pilot has a desk pen that writes better than the metropolitan in my opinion, and it's about half the price. That being said, the more expensive options tend to use more premium materials and better craftsmanship. And there does tend to be a point of diminishing returns.
@blackout57
@blackout57 6 жыл бұрын
Ivcsslacker, The distinction between form and and function is right. And when you pay a higher price for a product you pay for a better quality control, if this is correct, it is not always true. I cannot recall if it is aurora or another brand, but an high end manufacturer tend to produce a line of fountain pens with a lot of problems. FPN knows better than me concerning that point. Premium materials are not always better, celluloid is a beautiful material, but more sensitive to solvents (including water) than other plastics. Another example: ebonite does not like heat, if it is good a feeding part, you must takes care when you set a nib on an full ebonite pen because it can be deformed. I got a Noodler's Konrad this week end, cheap as possible, the quality is decent and the manual does not contain any special-chimps line. There are no do and do not, just a perfect DIY explanation. You have a trouble with the piston? Do not worry, got to the hardware store get an O-ring for $0.40 and fix your pen like a man. I love when you must adjust your pen before use, when it works you feel great. Those pens are strong enough to not be destroyed by a all but expert guy (as long as the materials are good). Of course, I do not want to do such thing when I pay $40 or more for a pen. N English There is one thing brands know how to do, that is the gold plating. No Made in China pen stay gold plated for long, even the >$40 pens. Brands (in the FP world) are protecting jobs, they are making stuff in EU and USA. MontBlanc will never make a pen in China, NEVER.

the quality of the knockoffs isn't easy to see in the video, it's not until you get one in your hand that you realize just how bad they are. fountain pens require very tight fitting parts to work well, and the knockoffs rarely achieve such precision.
