Omg yes! I watched a watercolor swatch video and one color turned from a beautiful cobalt blue to drying with a bit of berry red in it. I watched it and gasped at how beautiful it turned over the span of a few minutes.

NOTE: Regarding the brand comparisons & water usage. This is purely experimental to compare the TRUE consistency of each brand, which is only possible if I use the *same* amount of water for each brand. In a "normal" painting session with any single brand, you'd use as much water as necessary to get it to work. So don't take my experiment as the end-all-be-all answer. They are all great to be honest. My comparison shows the inherent quality of each consistency - it's up to you to add as much water as needed to get it to perform how YOU like it. It's nearly impossible to compare so many brands without nitpicking little things. Any of these would be a good purchase, and so much of it depends on your technique. And yes I realize I switched the alphabetical order of Schmincke & Shinhan ...my brain stopped working after endless days of editing/narrating 😂 Anyways...enjoy!
@janaemerson3344

Holy cow Sarah! Such a great review! Thanks for the time and effort. Listening to your thoughts while watching you paint the lovely coastal seascapes was mesmerizing. And I never realized until this video that you had a gouache database. Cool! My conclusions about brands were so similar to yours, so I was happy to hear that from a more prolific, experienced gouache painter. I was particularly interested in your flow and stickiness comments. I paint differently with gouache, using more water, much like I would transparent watercolor unless I specifically need the opacity somewhere, so those observations were also valuable. This will be a video I and many others will return to often I predict. Thanks again!

I've been painting only watercolors for a long time now. I really don't like paints like oil or acrylics, but sometimes I want to try other techniques. I've wanted to try gouache for a long time, I like this matte finish, but all those brands I bought were very cheap and they didn't give me the opaque I needed. I really wanted to try Holbein for a long time, since I've been painting with watercolors of this brand for a long time. I really liked your tests and now I can buy it without fear to try it out. This is probably the most unbiased video I've seen of gouache, thank you Sarah!

I'd be surprised if the honey based ones mold more easily considering honey is naturally antibacterial and as itself actually cannot mold or go bad.

I'm so so glad you are reviewing Daler Rowney. It was hard looking for a review when I was thinking of buying them. It's one of the brands I can get my hands on very easily because they sell it in the art section of the bookstore in my city. Daniel Smith's are so expensive that buying just one tube feels like a splurge. It's hard to justify that for a hobbyist like me. But now that I get a validation (hahah) for DR I don't need to think about Daniel Smith anymore 🤣

Hi Sarah - thanks for this review. I can only comment of my experiences with Royal Talens, HIMI and Arteza gouache paints. I've been using Royal Talens for about two and a half years now. Arteza and HIMI were both trialled later out of curiosity and were both found wanting, particularly Arteza. What I have found interesting is that I haven't found any evidence of what you've described whilst using Royal Talens. I've found it to be really easy and creamy to apply and cover on many different surfaces with excellent blending and finished results. I realise that I'm not a professional artist, merely a very keen amateur. Even so, I find it fascinating that we've come to such polar opposites of opinion of the same medium. Bizarre.

Since I was doing a very specific comparison, I was using the same amount of water for all the brands (as little as possible) which showed me the inherent flow of each brand. This of course is meant to be an experiment to compare them all which is nearly impossible but I tried. In a more natural setting, adding more water than I did would make the Talens easier to use. Many of the comments here state this is the case. So you most likely added the appropriate amount of water to achieve that flow, which is good! Keep going!

I'm halfway into the video, and I just wanted to say, it's informative enough to help me gauge what gouaches would work for me. The feeling of working with the gouaches, opacity, swatches, mixing, wetness, a demonstration of how they work from the tube, as well as a full illustration to show the outcome, and pricing. I like that the music isn't overwhelming the narration, that can easily make listening aggravating.

@@hannahthufvesson Switching between art materials is actually a very good way to learn. I’m not sure what the logic behind it is, but I think it’s to keep things fresh. I remember at school one of the teachers told us to study each subject for 45-60 mins or so and switch to something else. There might actually be some science behind that, something to do with how the brain works or to keep it interested. Can’t remember to be honest.

It helps a lot to be able to better understand the differences between brands without the need to spend a large lump sum at the beginning. So thanks again for that. thank you so much for this great review! And it is such a joy to watch you paint these beautiful sceneries😍 One word though to Schmincke Horadam gouache price issue: I live in Germany and Schmincke is a german brand. Here I would get the colours for 7,15 Euros for the white, yellow and blue and 11,75 Euros for the carmine, which is a different price group, buying them from an onlineshop named Gerstäcker, where I mostly buy my art supplies. So it probably matters most where you buy the paints. I really dont know why the price would be so high in other countries, since I get Winsor and Newton gouache for a decent price here. Also Schmincke has a Designers gouache as well which costs 6,02 Euros for 20 ml tubes, which performs very well too.

Excellent review. From your paintings here, I will try Holbein, Daler Rowney and Shinhan. I was especially impressed by your Holbein and Shinhan paintings. Straight up beautiful. Windsor & Newton needs to improve those tube caps.

I'd love to try other professional gouache paints but for now I'm sticking with W&N cuz it's by far the cheapest option at 2,20€ per tube (previously 1,50€ so u can imagine how many tubes I've bought👀) I'm so happy you love these paints, gouache is my favourite medium and your channel is a huge inspiration to me💞

I've been rewatching some of these older videos of yours, also just watched your dried palette video. I'm still fascinated with the fact that the M. Graham, with its honey, dries faster than other gouaches; whereas you say here that the Daniel Smith dries faster than other brands when using out of tube, but then it ends up rewetting so nicely in your dry palette! Seems like a paradox. Thanks again for your tireless work on our behalf!

Really love how the Daler Rowney painting looks. Your review also made me curious about the M. Graham gouache, but it seems difficult to get around here (Germany). Pretty stoked that I can get the Schmincke for a lot cheaper here, though. I mostly own Holbein gouache and a tube of Schmincke's white. Holbein has some really beautiful seasonal sets (called "Irodori") that I can highly recommend, although the opacity varies a lot between them. Thank you for the in-depth reviews! A lot of work and effort has gone into your videos, and I'm grateful for your work and recommendations!

I started out with watercolor and fell in love with gouache recently. I started with the Himi gouache. I loved the painting process but hated that to get it to become opaque, I had to add REALLY thick layers that made things look streaky. Since I live in Asia, it's easier for me to acquire Holbein and Shinhan and they're cheaper than the other professional grade for me. So far, I am loving them so much. In fact, I am waiting for my Holbein Irodori Gouache (winter set) to arrive

I really liked winsor and newton and that one is the one i use, but in the US/Mexico(I Live in the border) is really expensive(17 dollars or more for series 4 paints ) i used to buy it at good price at Jackson art and get it shipped to me, but it seems now winsor and newton wont let them sell out of the US, So i might now try Shinhan and Schmicke since i can get them imported (in the US price are double for those too) Thanks for being a detective of gouache , appreciate all the hard work that goes into the videos it is a super useful resource for information and inspiration.

This is an awesome video, Sarah! Thank you for it! I live in France and here there is an extra-fine gouache that is highly recommended by many professional artists and superior art schools, the Linel Extra-Fine Gouache by Lefranc Bourgeois. It is Made in France (it has been for the past 300 years or so) and it is very affordable here. Have you ever heard of them?

I'm so glad I stumbled upon your videos! This is so informative, and saved me another gouache mistake (almost bought my second less-than optimal set of gouache) and now I'm instead going to invest in the Winsor&newton designer gouache! I also appreciate all the time and effort you've put into the mold and lightfastness tests. Thanks!!!

BRB purchasing Daler Rowney gouache asap…. My Holbein paints sadly were a bit disappointing and turned me off from using gouache… and that cap problem I totally relate! It dries soooo faaaast. Thanks so so much for the blood sweat and tears on this comprehensive video-it was worth the wait (been waiting since you announced it haha😅)❤

Wow! Great video! This took a lot of time and discipline so kudos to you. I'm not even a gouache user but I love color theory. Lol. I started out with watercolors but think I would like the opacity of gouache better, which is why I started following your channel; I just can't justify starting a whole new medium at this point. Nice to know I have a wealth of information at my fingertips if I do decide to make the jump to gouache.

For the most part, all of these professional brands are pleasant to use with only minor differences, especially since in a normal session you'll be adding however much water you need to make them flow. It just depends on your painting style, so maybe trying two or three brands (just a couple tubes of each) might help you decide which brand suits you.

I can definitely confirm about the M Graham gouache being extra prone to mold. I got an MG raw umber to put into my airtight palette and to this day that still is the only color that’s ever molded on me. It happened less than 2 weeks after I put it in the palette too. 😅

Same for me. I loaded up a stay wet palette with a few M Graham primaries, painted once with them, and opened up my palette about two weeks later to find ALL 9 colors were white and fuzzy with mold 😭. Now I let them dry before closing the palette, and use directly from the tube whenever I need wet paint. None of my other gouache is like this.
