Please talk more about the planet stuff. Most people don't realize that this is a mainstream LDS belief

Mormons don’t talk about it much because it reinforces the belief by conservative Christians that Mormons are not really Christians and will not be saved. Because they believe that Jesus and God were men like us who attained godhood by their obedience and practice of Mormon law, they don’t worship and trust that Jesus is the son of God and part of the Trinity. Conservative Christians (like me) believe that all that is necessary for salvation is to believe that Christ, the Word of God, died on the Cross for a penalty for our sins. He came as a human baby, grew up and established his church on Earth to save as many as would believe and be saved from the slavery of sin. Works are not necessary, though they are a “fruit” of salvation. Mormons have a whole list of things you must do to attain “salvation” which is to go to the highest level (Celestial) kingdom and become a god of your own planet and populate it with your spirit wives (goddesses) and children. One of the more bothersome things about the LDS system, that you can never be perfect enough to be saved because you are a human and full of fault and sin. That’s why we believe in who Christ is because otherwise we could never be saved by our own merit.

Sam- I really appreciate the way you talk positively about the good things you did experience growing up in the FLDS. I think it “keeps it honest”. It’s easy to “pile on the hate”, it’s much harder to come from the place you do that combines compassion and honesty on all fronts- both good and bad. To be clear, I’m not saying I think you paint rosy, beautiful pictures of everything throughout your childhood or give grace where it’s not deserved. What I am saying is that I appreciate and love that you do talk about how much your mother and father loved you in the ways they were/are able along with the ways the community and specific members of the community are harmful and dangerous. You do a great job balancing both truths.

Yes, I always appreciate this as well. It's so easy once you lose your rose-coloured glasses to be tempted to see everything through your new lens and throw the baby out with the bathwater, so to speak. It shows a lot of maturity and to recognise the bad without it colouring the good and be able to live with the mixed feelings and recognise that both can coexist.

The promise of "becoming a god" really appeals to one's ego. In the bible, even Jesus did not want that same exaltation. He said that all the glory belonged to his father. Wanting to be a "god", lusting for that glory/status/praise/power can be seen as a prime example of one not being "Christ-like" but rather being self-seeking and self-serving.

Enoch's first wife Katrina is my husband's cousin. 😅 Rockland is an interesting community because it's not cohesive religiously. Some are independent, some are affiliated with the AUB, some are not really religious and aren't polygamist, and I've heard that there are or have been Snuffer-ites living there. You don't have to believe in the same leadership structure to live there. Most, however, do have similar beliefs.

I’ve always, since my teen years,I’m 61 now, have said if it’s in the church doctrine,it’s being practiced. The LDS say they don’t practice it,but they then say you’ll have plural wives in the Celestial Kingdom. A man’s wife dies. He can again be sealed to another woman. Not if a woman is widowed, she has to have her sealing annulled before marrying someone else. I know that is a fact. I’ve known several widows and widowers.

The apologetics to keep the women down, and to justify unnecessary suffering in general, is the same in islam. It was what I was told when my marriage was breaking down. I really enjoyed this documentary. I feel like it gives the most overall honest and accurate view of the progressive polygamy culture and groups. Not every group is like the Aub , Kingston and flds. Some are just trying to get back to basics of what we believe God wants for us. My community tries to things in a much more organized and member involved manner. We’re not about power or control. We genuinely try to help each other on this path. As far as the comment about life is supposed to be hard. That’s absolutely true. Working towards a successful career is not going to be easy. Working out and dieting to be healthy is not going to be easy. Having children is not going to be easy. Nothing in life worth really having is going to be easy. But it will be worth it.

I notice in these situations they say you have a choice, but if you descent they don't just let it go and move on. They will keep asking again and again until your guilty conscious gives in and you ascent. It's the illusion of power without any actual power. In the end the marriage was always going to take place, they could make a scene and lose favor, or swallow their feelings and go along for the sake of harmony in the family.

Hi guys I know it's hard to get a full perspective on one documentary but I want to touch base on The voting system we had when it came to wanting to bring Lydia into the family or not. My name is Lillian and I am the second wife. First of all voting system in our family is a big deal because we are a team and a family unit and we actually implement that system quite a bit. The little boy who did not want his dad to marry Lydia was sad because he wanted to marry her him self, he was in love with her. The documentary didn't catch the whole thing it was actually very cute eventually we ended up explaining to him that he was too young to marry her but she could still be a part of our family if dad married her. Also the camera didn't catch that I did raise my hand several times and there was quite a few points in our relationship when I told my husband that I decided I don't want to go along with it because it was a very long courtship and very painful, This was separate and not on the documentary my husband told me in private that he would not move forward because we are a team or nothing. Eventually I did choose her and I'm so glad I did absolutely love her she is one of my very best friends and we are doing fantastic.

On one hand, my first reaction is, nothing that has the word patriarchal in its name sounds credible in the first place IMO, but also, I do want to point out, even a broken clock is right twice a day. Posterity can have such a wider meaning than birthing biologically related babies!! (Hence that phrase, “to record for posterity) There are so many different ways to make a positive difference, and I’m sure you already know that, but just in case, I wanted to chime in. You can nurture a child, but you can also nurture a community, a project, your unique gifts, the gifts of others, etc. I can only imagine it must be extremely difficult to have grown up with such an iron-fisted emphasis on making babies. Regular ol society was intense enough in that regard, when I was a kid (80s and 90s, when wooly mammoths roamed the earth)

Never Mormon here. I was raised in East Africa. British colonial until independence in Kenya in 1963 when I was barely kindergarten age. I grew up on a farm, indigenous people practiced polygamy. As a white girl child ( with super culturally trained racist parents as employer privilege) I was folded into every family on that farm. I watched how it all played out and every family was different. Survival and so many babies dying early ( children were not named until they were 2 and you could tell how many died before because their name would be “John who tried to enter this world 3 times” as the belief was the same spirit was trying to be born. Also, that child would be named for an ancestor that they were perceived to resemble. So much misogyny in the Mormon structures. 😡 “Mother of nations” was a British Colonial standard. White superiority over people whites did not understand. At. All. Colonialism, misogyny, racism all of that comes from an assumption of power over others. I prefer to believe in power with others, however difficult, long, and extremely annoying it can be. Peace is Love. It’s really hard to refuse power over short cuts. The more we accept power over short cuts the more distorted humanity becomes. I’m a Quaker. (Religious Society of Friends) it’s a difficult path and like Mormonism practiced poorly by many members. Our founders may have been bi-polar ( George Fox) or unappreciated wife of an uptight Judge ( Margaret Fell). Obviously religion of any kind falls into power over or power with values. I’m down WITH.

you know, 'GOD' and "the Afterlife" are BEYOND our puny imaginations to comprehend. it is INFINIITE, how can we grasp that in its entirety? the mystics in all religions traditions say this.

Man, the Brown family have dark, dark secrets in polygamy and showed how dysfunctional those families are. I see the pain in the wives and how destructive this family structure can be.

No one can be a God! There is something greater and more spiritual out there but it's not man's job to try to become it! All those who proclaim to be profits of God are Fake ! No matter what the religion!

Personally I’ve had lots of opportunity to take multiple wives. But I’m very conflicted about it. Because I love Christianity. I find when I let myself embrace the polygamous thoughts my thoughts become more selfish and it bleeds over into other areas of my life. I’ve genuinely had dozens of offers from women who’ve told me they’re super down for multiple wives. And they genuinely look ecstatic. Since I’ve learned it was an option I’ve experimented by bringing it up with women. Many are not interested. That’s cool. Some are interested but look hurt when I suggest it. Then there are some who look at me with googley eyes when I say I want 3 wives and 20 children. I’ve literally heard “oh finally I found a guy who just says it!” And yeah she was looking at me with the biggest googley eyes ever. I could tell all that was between us was me buying her a plane ticket. If I do decide to go down the polygamous route. I will only pick those women who look so excited when I suggest it. I don’t want to hurt anyone. And I don’t want to seduce first then bring it up. That’s not cool. And luckily for me unnecessary. One thing I struggle with is that I want to be really successful. And I’ve been learning about how the most successful men do relationships. In a nutshell they all say get one good wife and focus on your goals. Because I have bigger goals as well as having a big family. I also struggle because I like Christianity because put simply, it asks you to sacrifice the most. And so therefore I inherently respect it as a religion he most. So I think if I took multiple wives and went my own way that I wouldn’t be as god fearing. And not as strong because of it.

The concept of becoming gods and goddesses seems really blasphemous even within the context of Mormonism. If you believe God is the ultimate authority, what about the thousands of dead people who have become gods by now? What makes this God better than the other gods? Why should life be about submission to earn the right to have power over people like you? It sounds like some type of diplomatic arrangement revolving around eventually becoming the master of others. The more I think about that concept, the more messed up it becomes.
