Comparing Between Shavette vs Straight Razor

Hi Eric, In Oct 2018, I started with the Dovo shavette. At shavette shave #16, I was able to shave my head with it so that I was able to move on to traditional straights. I believe that a beginner should master a shavette because you learn angles very quickly, soft pressure and the initial outlay is economical. Once shavette shaving is mastered, then transitioning to straights is a breeze. Presently, I have 102 traditional straight razor and 101 shavette shaves. I firmly believe that if this klutzy guy can straight shave, then anyone can! Lol! Seriously, keep making your videos because they are entertaining and information. I also am a firm believer in the half pass. Ciao, my friend!

@@AdventuresInWetShaving Thank you Eric! I think you misunderstood. I don't have 200 + razors. I meant that I have done 200 straight shaves under my belt. My collection of straight razors are: 2 Ralf Austs, 2 Dovos, 2 Wostenhoms, 2 C-mons, 1 F W Engle, 1 Thiers Issard, 1 Boker, 1 Herder, 1 Henckel Friodur and of course my shavette. It is a modest collection, but it is impressive to me. Lol! Thanks again for encouraging me and others.

Couldn't agree more. The hardest thing to learn is the pressure - i went from cartridges to a DE, to a straight and then a shavette. You just cannot get away with pressing too hard with a shavette. i shave my head with whatever is in my hand - but doing the back of my head i can hear Obi telling me to feel the force! i hope you treated yourself at shave 200. T

@@trunkerdixon Thanks! I keep a log of my shaves so that I completed 100 Dovo Shavette shaves and 100 traditional straight razor shaves within one week of each other. I treated myself to a home made streak dinner with a dish of chocolate ice cream to end a fabulous meal for each milestone of 100 shaves. 2 steak dinners and ice cream in one week forced me to work out harder. Lol! Anyway, I love straight shaving and it's a shame that most guys will never know the joy of using a straight razor.

Very informative video Eric. I tried the feather shavette before I tried a straight razor and I definitely agree that it is harder and more difficult to shave with a shavette than a regular straight razor.

As far as shavettes go I have to recommend feather. Straights are the way to go! Had a thought. Perhaps you could create an adventures in wet shaving facebook community.

Great question Manish! ;) For your most comfortable shave with a shavette or straight razor you will still be looking for that approximate 20-30º shaving angle. Keeping a shallow angle will give you the best shave possible all around with either razor. You can get away with a wider shaving angle using a shavette because they have a machine sharp blade, but you'll sacrifice comfort at that wider angle. I take my time, slow and steady including my other hand. Coming along well, I'll take to a vintage ebay razor honed by a Hone meister and a beginner strop. Goosebumps!! Your videos help a ton

I have a thought. Please tell me if i'm right or wrong. Most shavettes are kind of small an very thin. They are made for barbers to shave other people with them and barbers aren't holdin a shavette like a straight razor but with their thumb and index finger instead (on the thicker part that is sitting before the blade). So am i right to assume that most shavettes aren't even designed to shave yourself but to shave others instead? So i'm thinking that the Parker SRB is made to shave others but the PTB (since it's bigger) is made to be used like a straight razor to shave yourself. Could this be true?

Great questions Freund333! ;) I do believe shavette were originally designed and created with barbers in mind to shave us. But with that being said, the shavette's that use a half of a DE blade can easily be used to shave your self too. The thing that makes something like the Parker SRB attractive is it can use the DE blades that you already have. Hi Eric, great video. I am learning a lot about straight razor shaving from your videos. Just started about 3 weeks ago with an Equinox shavette. I was able to get a BBS shave with no nicks or cuts after my 3rd try. I'm thinking of moving to a real straight razor now. Which one would your recommend for a beginner like me? Is the Gold Dollar 208 a good choice? I'm thinking of spending not more than a $100. Or should I just go for a Dovo or Thiers Issard?

Great question Yip Mann Fai! ;) You can always start with a Gold Dollar 208 it's a good shaver for the price and will fall under your price target with everything. Then in the future you could get a the Dovo and Thiers Issard... between the two I would go with the Thiers Issard "Our Unrivalled" Hollow Ground Fully Warranted 6/8" Blade with Faux Tortoise Shell Handles. I am biased to say a Dovo 5/8 roundpoint SR might be a better choice for a newbie. The 5/8 gives you better maneuverability than a large blade especially when shaving under the nose. It helps you see where you are shaving as you are learnjng to straight shave. Once you feel confident in handling your SR and getting great shaves without nicks and irritation, then you can go to a 6/8. Once you feel confident with the 6/8, then move on to a 7/8 if you so desire. This progression of small increments of blade widths will make it easier for you. Eventually, you will determine what width works best for you or that any size equally works for you. These suggestions are based on my experience in straight shaving. It doesn't mean that my way is the only way. If you want to try a 6/8 roundpoint that's fine, but you may be discouraged because it may be too unwieldy for you coming out of the gate. A Parker SRX is maybe $25 and a lot of the shavettes on Walmart or Amazon that hold a half DE blade are $15. Even a decent vintage SR is going to run you $35. On a cost basis, shaving with a straight razor is miles more expensive than using some of this gear. Add in your strops and pastes and stones etc. I use shavettes for the time i can save during a work week. If you wanted the cheapest shave for the lowest level of skill, then you buy a DE razor. They are easy to learn and cheap to buy and what you learn is applicable to other methods of shaving because you will understand blade angle, stemming blood loss, (hehe) and how to make a decent lather. Whether you get into straights or shavettes, you will still have to learn skin stretching - it really is a prerequisite for this stuff - you want your skin as flat as possible. Machine sharp means it's extremely thin and unforgiving. The currency is blood. Press too hard..angle wrong..God forbid you slide it! My opinion is that it takes a bit more skill to guide a shavette than a SR. During the week - i use a shavette - it's faster. Weekends - straights - i have the time. T

Your spot on Machine Sharp means it's extremely thin and unforgiving and learning how to stretching is a prerequisite with a shavette... press to hard or the wrong angle... it's going to be in for a bumpy ride. The only problem with the chavette is the sharp sides of the gillette blade, which are unprotected! then shaving with a Straight Razor is much safer.

@@AdventuresInWetShaving Today I made a small adjustment to the gillette blades that fit in the shavette. I rounded the sharp edges on an Atoma Diamond Stone, now not a single cut. I still maintain that a Straight Razor is a better choice, but for a quick shave I still use my shavette! Perhaps a solution for those who want to learn with a shavette!

However, you can pick up a shave ready Gold dollar or ZY straight razor either one will be a great starter straight razor at a much cheaper price point. @@AdventuresInWetShaving There are different types of razor blades that works better or "worse" with different types of grains. Tougher grains don't do as well with hollow grounds as they do with stiffer razors like a wedge. Something i noticed when i first introduced my dad to straight razors, and he used my half hollow ground and later used a true wedge i had laying around. He never let go of the latter til the day he passed. I find i can use all razors, since my grains are thinner and responds well with every type of blade. Though personally i really prefer the Hollow ground.
