Hey VMT I have two questions i wanna ask you from a photographer myself. I'm relatively still new to photography but I know the basics of photography and the like. With that being said 1) What does EF and RF mean? 2) Would it be preferrable to get a mirrorless adapter given that i have a EOS 500D camera? I hope i get to hear from you soon. Great video too i learned alot from the differences between the EF and RF lenses!

For my needs the 24-104 f/4 is a winner for walk-a-bout's. That and the 16-35 f/2.8 is pretty much all I need. Sometimes the 70-300 f/3.5 to 5.6 is selected, but it's beast to lug around. No need to look at mirrorless right now as I mostly do stills and for video 1080/30 works just fine. I'm keeping the 5D IV until it wears out. Sorry, no more money to Canon for awhile. 😊

There's plenty of studies where the new glass isn't optically any better than the EF counterpart.

Another great comparison. I own both and still find this focal length zoom my go to more than 90% of the time. I just can’t let go of the EF version so it always sits on another body to grab and go, just in case. 😂 I also own the Fuji equivalent F2.8 zoom option for my XF mount bodies. For those who adapt lenses, the EF version also pairs very well with the Fuji GF medium format series. Just saying.

The function ring is also available in the expensive version of the EF to RF adapter, and here its close to the body, so you dont hit the focus ring by mistake.

I can totally understand you, there's a learning curve to it, but I find it more aesthetically appealing, but the adapter is actually a great idea for someone who would prefer to have the function ring closer, and EF lenses do have their special look to them.

@@AlfieLW I do have the RF 24-70 f2.8 and I would say canon made a smart move by making the function ring feel different in terms of texture and the way it rotates, it also makes a click sound with every rotation, so IMO it’s almost impossible to accidentally interchange the focus ring with the function ring, I also hardly use manual focus and for me after a few days of using the lens, it just feels very natural for me.

I did a comparison with my 90D and my R5 and they are both great cameras, but the R5 was sharper, was brighter and the colors were different, and to be honest I liked both of them. I don’t know if the difference in color is from the body or a combination of lens and sensor tbh.

This was nicely done. I had the EF 24-70 f2.8 II for many years paired with the Mark II. I loved that combo and got a lot really good pictures from it. I've only rented the new RF 24-70mm once and it seemed excellent. I did buy the RF 28-70mm f/2.0. Nice comparison. I missed with which camera were you comparing autofocus, but I'm almost certain that the delay is due to camera rather than the lens. I have an R6 and I have Auto Focus menu where I can tweak responsiveness and at the most sensitive setting the response is immediate, as soon as something enters the frame. Extremely useful for wildlife photography where you can be tracking a fast subject that pops into and out of frame, regardless of the lens. AF settings menu was the biggest and the most pleasant surprise when I went from my 90D to R6. I was like "HEY! THIS IS CHEATING!" So in video mode on R6 the menu is in AF, page 3, called Movie Servo AF track sens. "Sens." meaning sensitivity. Goes from -3 to +3 the latter being the most sensitive.

Nice video. Though you said that constant aperture is an advantage when you zoom in and out with video - because you don’t need to adjust exposure But wouldn’t most good modern hybrid cameras adjust the exposure (or use Auto ISO) - automatically?
@VideoMakerTwist
@VideoMakerTwist Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, you're right, but when it comes to shooting video, the AUTO ISO isn't a good option at all if you want to level up to a more pro level. The exposure is adjusting constantly and when you will start editing the video, you will constantly have issues because of this. Same happens for white balance on video. For photos, setting the ISO on Auto, it's fine when the shutter speed and aperture are locked down.

Is the EF version a little bit wider at 24mm? Or did you use two different cameras to do the shot @6:31?
@VideoMakerTwist
@VideoMakerTwist Жыл бұрын
It could be just a bit wider and I think there are 2 reasons for this: one of them is the fact that the glass inside is placed in different positions between the EF and RF versions. The second reason could be the fact that the RF doesn't have focus breathing and this could be achieved by croping in a bit to compensate the "zoom" effect. It's a personal opinion.

Just a question, as I am very green with photography. When testing eye tracking, have you found a difference when testing subjects with and without waring glasses?
@VideoMakerTwist
@VideoMakerTwist 9 ай бұрын
The eye tracking performance depends on your camera as well. For example: Canon EOS R is not always so good at tracking someone's eye when wearing glasses, but a Canon R6 mark II does an excellent job at this. So it's about the camera capabilities also, and not just the lens.

The RF 24-70 2.8 is actually cheaper than the R6 mk II (with $100 USD). On the other hand, I personally think Canon will accept third party lenses in the near future, otherwise they'll lose clients...

Any videos possible comparing sharpness when adapting EF lenses to RF cameras? I am using a 24-70 F2.8 on a R5C and a EF 70-200 F2.8 III. With the 24-70 I get tack sharp images, almost to sharp. Banger lens. But when using the EF 70-200 2.8 III my images are 9 out of 10 times soft and blurry focus. Meanwhile I get super sharp photos on the 5D Mark II with the EF 70-200. Is that an adapting issue or are there any settings for that?
@VideoMakerTwist
@VideoMakerTwist Жыл бұрын
I wish I can help you with this, but the EF version of the lens was not mine, as I mention in the video. There should be no differences when adapting EF lenses. The only thing that makes a difference is the camera sensor. During the years there were a few lenses that were less sharp on some camera bodies.

Would you choose RF 24-70 or the RF 70-200 2.8
@VideoMakerTwist
@VideoMakerTwist Жыл бұрын
As I own the RF 24-70 now, the RF 70-200 will be the next lens to buy. However, I would use the 24-70 much often than the 70-200. So if I would need to choose, I would go with the 24-70 because I can do the most things with it.

Although it is better for video, on a C70 the full frame RF lens will have a crop factor and will become a 38.4mm. Only this disadvantage!
@MomentphotographyCoUk
@MomentphotographyCoUk Жыл бұрын
The image quality is so close between the two, it just isn't worth the investment from a photographic point of view, so I agree with you. The EF version (which I own) seems to be softest at 50mm at 2.8. But I have the RF 50mm 1.2L which blows both 24-70 lenses out of the water for sharpness. I don't like the 24-70 in general for image quality when compared to primes. I'd much rather use my EF 35mm 1.4L II or my RF 85mm 1.2L.

The narrative format of this video of this video doesn't make a lot of sense except of stretching out the video. The RF is the successor of the EF, besides the updated mount (diameter) it's the engineers giving the same requirements a new shot employing newer materials and technologies - hence we can expect the RF to be better than the EF. Whats left to ask - is the RF better than the EF in all respects? Significantly? Any aspects where the EF is actually better? done.

I purchased the first version of 24-70 2.8L lens. There was a time in my life when I was shooting a lot. Then, I put my lens on the shelf. Last week, I photographed my nephew's concert and discovered that the zoom on my $1300 Canon prime lens got stuck at 28 mm and does not want to retract all the way back to 24 mm. I called Canon to figure out if they can fix it. Canon said this lens is not repairable because they do not make parts for it anymore. In other words, I wanted to correct your statement that Canon lens is a long term investment. It is not. It is a short term large expense and a long term useless piece of garbage. Canon does not stand behind its products. This is a prime lens, and Canon does not support it anymore. I could understand lack of support on a $400 lens. Prime lens is a different story. My lens is not repairable because Canon does not want to produce probably a 25 cent part that got worn out. Shame on Canon. Never again. Canon does not believe in its own products and subscribed to the ideology of planned obsolescence.
@Hooliosis
@Hooliosis 9 ай бұрын
The first version was produced in 2002-2012 so more than 10 years min, why would canon still produce parts for this lens? It’s a zoom not a prime lens also. Unfortunately things do wear or seize over time, this doesn’t mean the quality is poor. At $1300 if it’s lasted you 10 years that’s only $130 a year😂. I have many older lenses and cameras that still work perfectly 20d, 50d, 5dmkiii, 1dx, 600mm f4 to name some. Most will not be repairable by canon, but you may find a camera repairer that has old parts that could fix it for you.
@dawidca
@dawidca 9 ай бұрын
@@Hooliosis Because this is not a $150 lens. Therefore, they should produce parts for it. I am sure parts from other lenses fit, but Canon wants people to drop $2K-3K on a new lens. I guess you work for Canon based on your comments. Nice try. Never Canon again.

@@dawidca Nah mate I don’t work for Canon, just being realistic. Your talking about a lens that could be 21 years old and complaining that it no longer serviceable. Obviously you don’t run your own business or you’d go broke, or you work for Sony. If you do I’d like you to repair the $4k HD rec-900E video camera I bought in 1996, I got it out the other day to film something and it no longer works, I’ll never buy Sony again😂.

@Hooliosis
@Hooliosis 9 ай бұрын
@@dawidcaIt actually is outdated that’s why it’s not serviceable, just bacause people use it doesn’t mean it’s not old technology, it’s been 11 years since it was last produced. Maybe if you didn’t leave it lying around it may still work have you thought about that, rather than place all the blame on canon. Like I said earlier, you can always try get it repaired by a third party repairer, I know of one in Melbourne, they may even buy it off you if it’s unrepairable for parts. More your loss if you think any other camera brand will do better, I’m sure canon will miss your once in 20year purchase.

EF for me is heavy duty whereas the RF feels like a Toy. Image quality on the RF is a little better but that does not justify its price difference as well as the fact that its build quality stinks. Sports journalists require a fast AF and RF has more pins but it feels to me like it is still small margins. It is okay for me to trade a bit of quality in the pictures but EF is still one of the sharpest out there. I would rather have a lens which isn't over priced, that wont break and feels like a lens. I have the F4 version of the EF I don't use anything below F4.00 stop much and that has IS
