Are cheap Amazon tools worth it? We will answer the question in this video.
I will carve a single pattern on two different pieces of leather using a cheap $25 set of Stamping tools along with my normal set of tools.
the results surprised me
stay tuned to the end to find out if they're worth it

For the difference in the price of tools, the variation in the quality of the work is almost unnoticeable. In my opinion a beginner couldnt go wrong with the cheaper amazon bought tools.

Like it said. A beginner. But once you step into that intermediate, professional stage the quality of the tools are very noticeable in the tooling. The crispness of the detail. And the fact that the quality tools are actually easier to use and get a deep impression

When I saw the results of the Amazon beveler I thought you were going to say it was garbage. Instead you gave it a fair evaluation and even gave a way to improve it with only a little effort. I honestly don’t think beginners would be able to see a lot of bang for your buck with expensive tools. Yes you will get tools you may never use. But it will give you an opportunity to build and replace as your skills improve . All for less than the cost of one premium tool. Very well done video.

I could see a very clear difference in the beveling. The Amazon beveling was super choppy which actually makes me feel a little better. I did leather wrk for a while and my beveling got better but never was where I wanted it before I could get more tools I broke my arm and couldn't tool anymore. I stopped doing leather for about 3 yrs till about a week ago. I found my beveling choppy and was wondering if it was just me or my tools themselves considering I pretty much have that same set and that's how my beveling looks. Yours may be a little better than mine. And I also noticed the background doesn't have that burnish look to it. It may also be the leather I have. I don't think it's as quality of leather but I could be wrong.

As Don Gonzalez said, it's not the tools. It's the tooler

not really though. sure, any good craftsman can make cheap tools work, BUT, the quality of work is not going to be the same, not even close. the cheaper tools have blemishes on the faces, and the tooling is very shallow and uneven on the stamps. all that makes a huge difference on the finished piece and how refined and professional it looks. better tools make better quality leather projects, there is no getting around that.

@@orion7741I agree. One of the reasons I try and get quality tools when i start out at anything. I figure after 6 mnths or so if I can't make it wrk with quality than I probably can't do it. Now that being said when I started leather wrk I got the best Amazon kit I could and still use them. But I can tell the difference when I use quality tools for sure.

I agree, but at the same time I don't. The thing with cheap vs quality is how much easier they are to use. The finer detail from the more expensive tools leaves a better impression. Not to say you can't use the cheap tools and still create something that looks excellent. But they are a bit harder to do so, and they seem to need to be hit a bit harder to get a good impression.

All the kits in the same price range are the same. Different "brand" names but they are all the exact same tools, so pick which ever you want.

What kinda paper did you use for the design transfer to leather?
@Handles-R-Lame
@Handles-R-Lame Жыл бұрын
I use normal tracing paper because you can find it at just about any art supply store. Some people also use thick vellum paper but i havent had much luck with that stuff. Hope this helps you out.

my bro. you cannot just use the swivel knife right out of the box.... You would never do that with any other swivel knife, so why do it with this one? They ALL need to be touched up, sharpened and stropped when you get them. no matter who you buy them from, they always need a bit of attention before using. I honestly dont think you gave the amazon tools a fair chance. you did not even try to clean up your bevels or anything. its like you did a bad job on purpose. Those amazon tools look like they would be absolute perfect for a beginner just getting into it. heck, we all have a handful of old "bad tools" that we started out with gathering dust in our boxes.

As with all tools there are tools for those with more money than brains and those who are broke. The maul for instance I’ve seen them from 23.00 to 170.00 which is just crazy. Cutting tools I may spend a little same as stamps. I’m new to this but know when it comes to tools there’s a price point for every wallet.
