The reason this works is because of how "Getting common denominators" work To make 10 and 11 have the same base, you usually can multiply them -> 10 * 11 is 110 Now to make each numerator match each base, so the fraction stays the same you multiply each numerator with the other's base: 7 * 11 is 77 -> 77/110 8 * 10 is 80 -> 80/110 but because the denominators are the same, and since we're just comparing, in this example we simply ignore the bottom

the basic explanation is that if the two fractions are equal you get the same number 7/11 and 7/11 - you get 77 and 77 using this, you can apply the inequality preservation this is, if you multiple an inequality by the same number you preserve the inequality 5 < 7 , right? and 5*5 < 7*5 (25 < 35) so now you do the thing in the video. The reason this method works is that by cross-multiplying, you’re effectively scaling both fractions to have the same hypothetical denominator (the product of the two original denominators). This allows you to compare the numerators directly, which represent the scaled values of the fractions. If one scaled numerator is larger than the other, then the corresponding original fraction is larger.

I can't comprend what this person just explained but I can tell that 8/11 is larger because both fractions are missing three pieces from the whole and the numerator on the right is cut into more pieces than the numerator on the left, so each missing piece in the fraction on the right is smaller than each missing piece in the other fraction.
@AverageLowElo69
@AverageLowElo69 11 ай бұрын
I can explain. So basically, you want the demonators to be equal, so you need to change the denominators by multiplication. But you cant change the values, so you multiply each by one. The first one, you multiply by 11/11, and the second one, you multiply by 10/10. Now, the demoninators are both 110, and the numerators are 77 and 80 respectively. 80 is bigger, so the second one is right

Your way is very good. It demonstrates a good understanding of fractions. For example, it's the same idea with 1/2 < 2/3 < 3/4 < 4/5 < 99/100..... My son understands this type of problem in this more conceptual way, too.
@0w3nn
@0w3nn 8 ай бұрын
Yes. If you add the same amount on the numerator and denominator, it's going to become larger, because the amount missing (3) will never change.

@TheDerlick that isn't a great way if you can't understand the other way too, since it ignores most fraction problems, and it's hard to go into calculating with fractions as well.
@TheDerlick
@TheDerlick 8 ай бұрын
If somebody isn't familiar with this type of problem, they surely gained no conceptual understanding of it after watching the video. You and I know the reason for cross-multiplying: the common denominator is 110, 11•10. The guy in the video gave no explanation of the concept. So the person who doesn't yet understand why this guy cross-multiplied but understands that 3/11 is smaller than 3/10 so therefore 8/11 is larger is still demonstrating a knowledge of fractions, imo. I compared it to my son whom I homeschool. He is very poor with math mechanics like how this guy solved the problem in the video yet he has a fantastic understanding of fractions using visual/conceptual means.

Another way to imagine this is following the pattern of increasing numerator and denominator infinitely. As both increase, the value of the fraction will increase up to a limit of 1, while decreasing it will end up at 1/4, since they both have the form of n/n+3. That means that for every value of n, the smaller n will have a lesser value.

Honestly i noticed something and it seemed to work. If a fraction has a numerator and a denominator that’s exactly 1 more than the other fraction then it’s bigger. For example 10/11>9/10>8/9>7/8>6/7>5/6>3/4>2/3 So for 7/10 and 8/11 using this logic 8/11 is simply bigger.

Nonono this is a stupid way to do it. Here is better way to figure out without doing calculations. Comparing 24948/43976 and 24951/43979 we cannot use the method you teach without using a calculator. Have you ever play a game that shows winrate? Imagine you win 24948 games in a total of 43976 games. Then you played threee more games and win all, which you win 24951 games in total of 43979. As you win all, ur winrate must be higher, which 24951/43979 is greater than 24948/43976. I call it winrate method.

What I do is I look for differences in the numerator and denominator. I just say "8 is 1 bigger than 7" in the numerator and "11 is 1 bigger than 10" in the denominator. 1/1 = 1, which is obviously greater than 7/10, so 8/11 is larger. This should work for any differences. For example, if you wanted to know if 9/13 was bigger than 7/10, you would do 9-7 = 2 in the numerator, 13-10 = 3 in the denominator. 2/3 is less than 7/10, so 7/10 is larger.
@roelsfotoos

This so called "hack" fails miserably though when you compare 7/10 to (-8)/(-11). Since -77 > -80 this would suggest that 7/10 is the biggest number which obviously is not the case❌.

In reality, we multiply the denominators of a fraction by each other and get the same number in denominators, but as we know, if the denominator is the same, then the fraction is greater, whose numerator is greater, Here they decided to skip multiplying the denominators, and immediately multiplied the numerators in their minds and compared them, there is no magic
