Agreed. There are a ton of videos out there. I hear jazzies run through fuzzes and mulitple delays, shimmer revebs, distortions, etc. And some of that is great, especially the really atmospheric stuff, but this is the gold standard for PURE Jazzmaster tone, in all its supple, sexy, uptown glory. One listens to the gorgeous, unadorned voice of the Jazzmaster and suddenly understands Leo Fender's vision of the perfect solid body jazz guitar. Absolutely mesmerizing.

Fantastic demo and really beautiful tone and playing. Quick question: Your bridge tones are so nice and not "shrill" on the high-end which can happen on Jazzmasters. Were you running the guitar volume and tone knobs on 10 or were they backed down a little? Just curious.

I'm thinking of putting an antiquity 1 in the bridge and an antiquity 2 in the neck of my squire classic vibe Jazzmaster. Does the antiquity 2 in the neck kind of sound like a strat or is it still Jazzmaster sounding and kind of mellow but also has clarity? Also how does the middle position sound? Combining those two pickups still makes it sound like the classic middle position sound of a Jazzmaster right?

What do you think about the Mastery bridge you have on the '59? I bought a Classic Player back in June, and love everything about it aside from horrific string ringout that happens behind the stock bridge. It's to a point where I keep my microfiber cloth for wiping off dust crammed behind the strings back there. Does the Mastery help with that? And do you feel it keeps tuning more stable with heavy tremolo usage?
@alexstrahle46508 жыл бұрын
The Mastery does sound better to my ear. It also stays in tune for me better. But it will not get rid of the ringing, they make a buzz stop for Jazzmasters that remedies that issue but then you can't play behind the bridge if that's something you like.

for what its worth - bought a Japanese left hand FSR JM last year here in the UK, very happy. Fender have ignored UK lefties for so long in the Jazzmasters coming into UK. Anyway, I persevered with the original bridge but splashed out on Mastery bridge and trem. Best thing I ever did. The string ring out is a quirk I have got used to. It doesn't go away but the guitar stays in tune even when divebombing. Very useful video, helping me decide on what pickups to buy. And lovely playing Alex.
@Blueguitar0077 жыл бұрын
The ringing is one of the unique "features"of a JM, it produces overtones when playing and can give a droning to some notes.
@humbleurchin8346 жыл бұрын
Alex Strahle, thanks so much for demoing these 3 guitars and pickups! This is exactly what I've been looking for. I've been researching how to best convert my Classic Player JM so that it sounds like a '59 JM for months now. I'd settled on the idea of getting Lollars and cutting the pots down to 500k, but after doing some research I didn't like how hot those pickups are compared to SD Antiquities (or the fact I'd have to spend extra changing the pots out). The SD Antiquity I set is what I was leaning towards, but after watching your video, I think I'll go with a SD Antiquity I neck pickup, and a Antiquity II bridge pickup (the A1 bridge pickup sounded a little muddy compared to the '59 bridge pickup IMO, perhaps you could offer your opinion on that idea? having played a real '59!) Also, great playing, and the proper clean tone in your video is much appreciated.

I have a Squire VM Jazzmaster with CBS spec pickups but the high strings seem to have some nasty peaks to them so I'm considering swapping them out for the SDs or Novak's. From what I've read, any of the 50's spec pickups will have more of a mellow top end. Can you please confirm this?
@alexstrahle46508 жыл бұрын

Trying to decide on getting a classic player or investing the money into the 62 AVRI. Any input? Is the American made JM that much better?
@Chileanseaweed8 жыл бұрын
Don't know much about JM's (sure love them), but for what I've heard and read, all players come down to the same opinion: Get the real thing for the cheapest price you can find. Look for vintage non-astronomically pricey models. Consider modding with a pickup swap, etc. I'd either save and get the AVRI, or get the Squier J Mascis and mod it heavily. But for MIM's... overall opinion is "why if you'd have to mod them anyways for the real sweet JM sound". That is, if you're a tone freak. If you don't mind, just get any lol
@alexstrahle46508 жыл бұрын
Both are great guitars. Personally I love my 62' reissue more than the classic player, but i've also worked on the 62' more.

Love the sounds and playing. My opinion will probably deviate from the popular one, but even though the '59 is the business, I'm loving the Antiquity IIs. Hopefully it's not because I'm a Ric Ocasek fanboy and the color scheme has me going there. Your bridge pickups are everything I want mine to be. Bright, chimey and twangy...where as mine would be more described as...ear piercing, blood curdling, insanity inducing. I had stock MIJs in mine and swapped them for Duncan Hots years ago but it was scarcely an improvement (though the middle and neck sound fine). Love that bridge sound you're getting though, and you and I have similar clean playing styles so it makes me even more like, "I KNOW THIS CAN HAPPEN FOR ME!" Are you running 1M pots in everything and are you rolled off the treble or volume knobs at all? I was looking into a Novak Fat for my bridge but if I can get things warmed up even JUST A BIT for about half that price I might look into the Antiquity IIs.
@alexstrahle46508 жыл бұрын
I am using the stock pots in all of the guitars. Which I should know the value of but I don't. The Deluxe Reverb helps a lot. It pairs nicely with the Jazzmasters. I was using an AC30 6/tb that I loved but it was way too brittle with these guitars. If you want warmth from the bridge pickup, I feel like the I's do that better.

Alex ,I'd like your opinion..I'm new to jazzmasters, I'm a tele guy and your vision helped as I was thinking of SD Antiquity 1s vs II's in my build..Going with 1s. I, also have a thing for a jazzmaster with tv Jones classics ,( fender custom shop has done this before )what's the general reception of a tv Jones loaded Jazzmaster..Jazzmaster enthusiast seem very critical to mods compared to the tele community from my little experience with this model guitar .Would it be much easier to sell a factory spec type Jazzmaster than a modded one if I ever decided to sell my guitar being built .. Thanks JB - PS well it's now Sept of 2019 ~ finally in final rounds of JM build as 'Lifes unexpected showed up & put it on hold . I never dreamed it would be a two year + build ~ ash body black laquer - USACG before Tommy left company roasted maple neck with extra dark rosewood , illuminated side marker glow green,mint green pick guard . Still stuck on Antquity 1s or 2 or because of cash maybe Fender Vintage 65 they sound good to me too . Hope you are well ,peace out . JB
@alexstrahle46508 жыл бұрын
Depends on who you talk to. I put TV jones in a Jazzmaster for a friend awhile ago. JM players don't mind modding, look at Sonic Youth or MBV. What the Jazzmaster community doesn't like is when people try to remove the quirks from the JM like putting on a buzz stop or removing the rhythm circuit.

No way! ill def have to look into that! thanks for the info. I have a japanese model in candy apple red, '03. Im soon going to modify the pickups. The neck plays like a dream. Im on the hunt for more JMs. Great playing and awesome Jazzmasters!

Good sounds! I got a 62 mij with Seymour ant 2s, popped a mastery bridge and trem and still not heaven,ibut there's always something about jazz masters that grinds don't you think? Buzz n noise that you can't quite place? I've had mine 20 years and popped a shim in to reduce the brake angle and feel like it plays better than ever, but now perhaps the pick ups are too far away! Anyway credit to you for having 3! Do you get buzz or too high action? I always return to my first guitar a strat. Charming man is a good tune!!!

The thing I love about Jazzmasters is they have quirks. The squeaks and rings and buzzes make them cool to me

Last question...any idea what the DC resistance is of your '59 pickups?
@alexstrahle46508 жыл бұрын
I believe it was like 7.65 on the bridge and 7.85 on the neck. Not 100% sure though. It was for sure in the 7 range though

Can you try out Seymour Duncan vintage pick ups?

Do u get buzzing on the low e string on your classic player and is it just normal for them to buzz. Ive had nine set up with a staytrem bridge. I have to set the action high for it to not buzz

Super playing and demo of all positions. Why does that '59 sound so rich full and better than what we can seem to come up with now?

Which set has the least amount of noise?

No, you're right! The 59 rhythm circuit does sound very jazz box-y for a solid body. I'm working on a Warmoth JM build as I don't like 7.25 radius or vintage frets. This was great research for me, other than the fact I realize I must buy original '59 pickups and wiring harness to get the sound I want! Thanks for making this video!
@Marylandmusicdk8 жыл бұрын
Watch out. It sounds weird, but my refin 59' JM sounds more hollow/ woody than all new JM's I've tried. New wires, SD ant.1's.
@patricklarson24328 жыл бұрын
I'm thinking about getting a chambered JM body from Warmoth and getting a solid maple neck with maple fretboard(sacrilege, I know) to make up for some of the brightness that may be lost by chambering the body. I think that will get me into the territory I am looking for. I agree with on the SD Ant. Ones.

Sounds awesome! fun fact the original Jazzmaster prototype had a maple fretboard so it's not sacrilege haha

Thanks Alex, nice vid. Love the Jazzmaster - I have a '66 in Olympic white. I can also vouch that it sounds amazing overdriven through an AC30 - such a fat sound. Rhythm circuit is really usable too. I've had to install a buss stop behind the bridge to stop the strings jumping out if you hit them even moderately hard. Apart from that, great guitar for live work and recording. Steve

Very much enjoyed this excellent video, great pickup comparison. I'm considering the SD Antiquity I's or the SD Vintage for JM pickups for my MIJ lefty Jazzmaster, so if you get a chance to compare the two in a video that would be useful. Anyway, lovely tasteful playing and I appreciate you actually playing the 59 (which sounds fantastic btw!) as guitars are made to be played not to gather dust, good on ya!

Thanks! I don't have the SD Vintage but maybe i'll try and get some from him to try out!

so what you're saying is get a 59' jazz, right??

Your '59 sounds unbelievable! It's my favourite year for JM...I have a sunburst '61 JM 'all original'...unfortunately I the Neck pickup died recently..I bought SD Antiquity 1's based on your video...until the original Neck can be rewound. What gauge strings are you using on the '59? I use 11-49 bit trying 12-52 with the Antiquity's.
@alexstrahle46508 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I love vintage JM's. Sorry to hear about your pickup, hope it comes back better than ever and I use 11-49 elixirs but i'm thinking about going to 12's haha

Great video! Love jazzmasters! I have a question though. Using a mastery bridge does the 59 still require a neck shim? Also what size frets did u go with? Vintage smallish?
@alexstrahle46508 жыл бұрын
I don't think my tech had to shim the neck for the Mastery but she did have to plane the fretboard for the frets. And as far as frets go we went vintage smallish, not as small as were on it when I bought it but not jumbo either.

Hey thanks Alex! Do you think a jazzmaster with Seymour Duncan Antiquity 1's would pair up ok with a Vox AC15C2?
@alexstrahle46508 жыл бұрын
Totally, those are the warmest pickups so they should balance out the highs in the Vox quite nicely
