Thank you. I just saw a word problem on Khan academy's site that threw me into cold shiver. It literally is like a mathematical voodoo, with the teacher going from simple equations to linear equations and word problems with no formulas or explanations whatsoever. It brought me to tears. Thank you for taking the time to break it down. And bring some hope .... I really do appreciate your help.

Doing the Khan Academy course, Algebra one 'Comparing linear rates word problems,' spooked me and some people out according to the Khan comments. Looking through the lens D=R*T , I can now transfer the wording into something that I understand.

Super annoyed. I'm doing the kahn academy college algebra and it didn't state this formula d=rt It just jumped into problems about dragons etc, and then problems to work out on your own. Thanks for making this video

You're welcome and I'm glad it helped! I don't know if the d = rt formula is how other teachers cover it. That is just how my mind sees it.

@Kahnmanmath3810 I'm having a problem with this question on Kahn Academy: Jaquan passed a checkpoint jogging at a constant speed of 9km/hour. Then, 2 minutes later, Odalis passed the same checkpoint. If Odalis runs at a constant speed of 12km/hour , then how far past the checkpoint will Odalis be when they catch up to Jaquan? Distance = ? I am having trouble formulating the equation. How do I solve for distance when there is a 2minute offset?
@khanmanmath3810Ай бұрын
Great question! Let's say the checkpoint distance = 0. When Odalis catches up to Jaquan, their distances are the same (equal). So d = d in both cases. Since d = rt, we can set rt = rt. For Jaquan, r = 9 and time = t. For Odalis, r = 12 and time = t - 2. 9t = 12(t - 2) Solve for t (should get 8), and plug in to either d = rt equations (should get 72).
@EnniodBleuАй бұрын
@@khanmanmath3810 Thank you for answering my question. Your instructions, they seem to make sense as I wrote it out, as that is a simple enough equation, but the answer ,8 ,back into distance= rate*time = 72km, is incorrect!? Apparently it is supposed to be 1.2km according to the KA step-by-step for this question but I don't understand their workings. I am so confused...
@khanmanmath3810Ай бұрын
@@EnniodBleu I'm sorry. I mismatched the units. If the rate is in km/hr , then t has to be in hours. 2 minutes = 2/60 hours For Jaquan, r = 9 and time = t. For Odalis, r = 12 and time = t - 2/60 9t = 12(t - 2/60) Solve for t (should get 2/15), and plug in to either d = rt equations (should get 1.2).

12:27 why is it not 13T + 9.5T? The total cost is 13 + 9.5 right?

She *makes* 13 dollars per shirt, but she *spends* 9.50 per shirt. To find the profit, you have to subtract what you spend from what you make. If I buy a car for $100, and sell it for $200, what is the profit? 200 minus 100.

you just gained a new subscriber. the downside of khan academy is that it always jumps on practice questions without even talking about the overview context of the lessons, formulas, and key points. we have to do it by ourselves. it shouldn't be a problem, only i'm a little bit dumb so i'm stuck. thank you sir !!

Thanks for this, the simplified formula in 3:51 helped a lot. I realized I could actually use variants of this formula to solve the rest of the equations. ex: for the beads and cm questions I did: 306 - 40s = 210 - 24s (s representing segments) Since the solution wanted cm, I multiplied the solution for segments by 5 to find the answer.
