I've got to say i had my reservations about the MK pro but now that i've been playing with that whistle for a while i just want to ditch the others and buy more keys haha. The only thing now is the slipperyness i used some tape to stop that but otherwise i love how they sound. Now have the G also , aiming to get a mezzo a. STill love all my Kerry whistles but i think the thunderbirds are nicer than the new buskers as they are softer. You can't beat the brass delrin one's for consistency in the upper octaves though but they sound more "silky" compared to the Aluminium whistles i love the sound of the aluminium but the brass ones are easier in many ways and as i said more consistent in the high notes. The problem with the Aluminium ones is just the amount of moisture and keeping them warm i love the sound they make though. Well i guess as you say you can't have it all. That's why i think the Karavaev whistles are a great inbetween to be honest as they have the plastic mouthpiece but the aluminium body .

Great all-around thoughts. Thanks so much for sharing those. I’m still looking forward to adding a Karavaev whistle to my collection.

I have absolutely no stretch to my fingers even though i have rather big hands. Carpal Tunnel. So i cant play a conventional Low D. Imagine my surprise when i found out Susato makes a whistle with a key. Love it I've been playing it for months and i enjoy it. And then Howard came iut with a keyed whistle. It was $450 and i am not rich. But i ordered it. What an amazing whistle. Aesthetically, its beautiful. Silky black. The tone though is incredible. I play this all the time. If you love playing a Low D, you have to own at least one Howard.

I completely agree. Susato makes nice instruments, but not to the same standard as a Howard. Sorry to hear about the Carpal Tunnel. Glad you are enjoying it.

Hey Scott. Thank you for going so much in depth with low D whistles. I think you might be the right person to help me solve a mystery. I just saw the Riverdance 25th aniversary show on DVD, and the first tune starts with a low whistle it seems. I wonder if you can confirm it, and maybe tell me which flute it is?? In addition, I would love to know who plays it. Maybe you even know that as well(?) I can link to the piece here. It's at time stamp 8:12. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aIWrp6FtYtd1n8k I hope you find time to reply. Thank you for sharing all your lessons. :)

My pleasure, and thank you for your kindness and encouragement. I looked and found that Tara Holley is the whistle / Uilleann pipe / concertina musician for the 25th anniversary recording. Apparently she is quite amazing. I’m trying to find what low whistle she is playing. I’ll let you know when I find out.

I haven’t yet found anything about the low whistle she plays. I’ll see if I can learn anything, but for now I’m striking out on what whistle she is playing. I won’t give up.

I just realized I didn’t pay attention to the auto spell check - her name is Tara Howley.

I have seen her play a variety of whistles and manufacturers. The point of the video where she is playing it appears to be the Reviol logo. They are in New Zealand. I have not yet tried one of their whistles, but I hear they are great. Here is a link: www.reviol.co.nz/HTML/LowWhistles.html

For me the worst is if they need to much air, if i can't hole more than 6 notes on a slow air i'm out. The James Dominick ones sound lovely but need sooo much air i had to sell them.
@LowDWhistle6 ай бұрын
I feel the same. I don’t think you should have to compromise air requirement to be expressive.
