Introducing the Mountain Made Low D Whistle by Whistle Smith

Every whistle has its place in the market. The Mountain Made whistle by Whistle Smith has two qualities that appear to a specific group in the market. This low D whistle provides close hole spacing on the bottom hand. It is also a very quiet whistle. The whistle also played quite easily, which is very nice.
The distance from the center of the fourth hole to the center of the sixth hole is: 70.05 mm (The distance on the Howard is 70.95. This is short, but not incredibly so)
The distance from the center of the fifth hole to the center of the sixth hole is: 37.1 mm (The MK Pro is 46.75. This is very close hole spacing for these two holes on a low D whistle)

I say this whistle appeals to a specific segment of the market, these features mean others will not be interested in this whistle. It is, as I said, a quiet whistle. If you push the whistle in the second octave it will play sharp. If you push the whistle in the lower octave it will break into the second octave.

I like mine, I honestly don’t play much anymore, but it was a great starter whistle. Once I brought it to a cabin, I was going to with some family and I knew it was quite enough not to bother everyone.

I do own this whistle/ it was my second after the keyed Susato. Did not like it from day 1. No volume at all and I was really happy to hear you play yours as there seemed no problem with decent volume. Something that I believe has not come up- are whistles ever lemons? Ordering by mail does not allow for checking them out.

I do like it, although it is not for everyone. The lower octave definitely has a lower volume than the second volume. However, the close finger spacing is great. Many manufacturers permit you to try a whistle and send it back if you don’t like it. Listening to reviews and guessing, trying, and returning if necessary are our best bets. Yes, it is possible to get a lemon. I once ordered a whistle that was mass produced but not tested before it was shipped. One of the holes was wallowed out and the whistle did not play well or in tune. I took pictures of the fault and emailed them. They replaced it right away. Even though you can get a lemon I’m pretty certain the store or manufacturer would correct the error. This is another reason for buying whistles that are individually tested.

On a happy note, my new wild Irish d whistle arrived yesterday(not low d) and I am SOOOO delighted. Have had many low end whistles. Night and day difference. Just live it. At first I was Concerned when I took it out of the package as it was much heavier than I am used to and also much thinner. But when I played it- just wow!

That’s exciting news! I agree. I love it. The low whistle is my go to for my playing, especially when I want to be expressive. But the high D, the Wild Irish, is just fun to play! I agree - such a delight.

I'd be interested to know what people watching this video think of the whistle's aesthetics. To me the decals give the whistle a toy like appearance.

That is the danger with the decals. My assumption is the decals could. Come off over time. A cleaner look would be great

@@LowDWhistle I do not recall if a reason was given but I suspect the decals are a means of advertising and perhaps encouraging other whistle players to consider a purchasing a whistle.
