Thank you to Fabric Hut for sending me these blades, and for the spectacular discount they're offering! I had actually purchased them myself long before they reached out and had been using them for while, and I will never look back. They are truly amazing blades, and I fully endorse them.
In today's video, I put rotary cutter blades to the test! Which rotary cutter blades are the best? Are titanium rotary cutter blades worth the extra cost? As quilters, there are a lot of options when it comes to blades - so I tested out three popular options so you don't have to.
Note: Joyful and Merry Quilting may receive minimal sums for anything purchased through links listed below this video, at no cost to you. You are in no way obligated to use these links. Thank you for your support!

What’s interesting is how long they might last. One of the local fabric shops put the date they put the blade in and will see how long they last. You know they’ll get a workout at a fabric store, one layer of fabric at a time.

For me, it is difficult to measure how long a blade will actually last. It not only depends on how much cutting you do, but also on your cutting mat, the types of fabric you are using (fleece, cotton, upholstery fabric, leather, etc.). Most quilters use 100% cotton which makes that part a little easier, but the cutting mat is a huge factor depending on whether or not you use a self-healing mat. Lots of variables. I'd be interested to hear the results from your quilt shop! Thanks for sharing!

Very well done! I just checked my box and there are no more titanium blades in my "stash", but from now on, I'd purchase them. But first I have to use up my other "good" rotary blades! I just had an idea that when those gift exchanges come up this coming Christmas season, put a package of Titanium blades in your gift! Everyone can use them!

Good morning, great comparison and timing for testing for me. Bought a packet of "name" brand blades from a quilt store, not my usual brand, that have disappointed. So am now having to purchase again! Last week in the Tuesday Tip you said something about a "discount code" for the titanium blades. I didn't note that in the video....maybe I missed something??? Thanks and I truly appreciate everything that you're doing each week and can't wait for Saturday Project Linus.

As a long time quilter, I totally agree that cheap blades are not the way to go. Although I have never used titanium blades, I have used a variety of name brands when it comes to rotary cutters. One thing about this test is you’re not necessarily telling us the brand, unless I totally missed that. I have cut up to eight layers at a time frequently with my Olfa rotary cutter but when I am cutting that many layers, I use my 60 mm blade and not the 45 more for safety and ease of cutting so that is something maybe you could also test. And even though we saw a little bit of movement in the fabric as you were cutting more and more layers, some of that would be the fact that the pieces were smaller, even though the stacks were thicker, so they’re apt to slide around more. But overall the demonstration definitely does show that a better quality blade is going to do a much better job cutting for you.

Thank you! I was initially just testing the Fabric Hut Titanium Blades - and comparing them to the Tungsteen Steel blades (several brands and all worked about the same). I agree - there are many other ways to test our blades that I need to try. Thank you for the suggestions and thank you for watching!

I didn’t find that the titanium blade lasted longer and was disappointed 😢. I don’t cut “many” layers at a time and only use quilt store cotton in my quilts. So I’ll give it another try seeing as how I have 10 unused blade left.

With this discount, I found that the titanium blades were a much better buy than the brand name blades - even when they were on sale. I also found the ease in cutting was hands down better with the titanium blades. Taking everything into consideration and the use and over-use of my cutter, I think these are a great buy and a great product.

Hi! I'm new to quilting and can't imagine where I would be cutting on more than 8 layers..and that would in itsself be rare.
@joyfulandmerryquilting
@joyfulandmerryquilting 9 ай бұрын
Of course, most quilters wouldn't be cutting that many layers at one time...but since I couldn't test how long the blades would last (too cost and time prohibitive), testing the sharpness by cutting layers of fabric was a way to see which blades produced the best results.

After watching this video I took advantage of the 50%-off offer and ordered a 10-pack from Fabric Hut. Then I learned that Amazon sells titanium blades for as little as $12/10-pack. Now I'm crossing my fingers these particular blades are worth the higher price.

I have found that these blades are far superior to the inexpensive Titanium blades. You'll have to try them out for yourself, but I believe you'll be pleased with the result. I was very happy with the quality of the blades and the ease of cutting. The discounted price offered by our link made them very affordable - even cheaper than the name brand tungsten steel blades that I tested.

I use cheap or old blades in a cheap free rotary cutter marked Paper Only or for some stabilizers, however not on foam or woven stabilizers. I call it my down and dirty cutter for rough cutting freezer paper perm plates in appliqué etc. I want to try a titanium blade, to see how it feels.
@joyfulandmerryquilting
@joyfulandmerryquilting 10 ай бұрын
Yes - those old blades have a lot of life in them when it comes to the "non-fabric" cuts. I do the same thing. The Titanium blades are amazing - I can't tell you how much I have loved mine. I had a wrist injury and it makes all the difference since you don't need to put as much pressure on the cutter as your cutter. Thanks for your comment!

I never cut more than 4 layers at a time anyway so the cheaper blades are just fine for me. Even if the titanium lasts twice as long they are twice the price so it works out the same cost.

I very seldom cut more than 4 layers so this test was more just a curiosity to me. I would be more interested in seeing proof of the claim that blades last twice as long. I understand that is much harder to test and prove but would be much more useful to me. I have actually found that I need to change my blade more often and I am reluctant to do so because of the cost of blades. I found some bulk titanium blades online for about a 1/3 or 1/4 the cost of these that cut like a dream and I feel good about changing them often. Even at $5 a blade, I tend to over use them and put my hands at risk when they become dull and I begin to force the cutting. Any chance of doing ome sort of "number of cuts" comparison?
@joyfulandmerryquilting
@joyfulandmerryquilting 10 ай бұрын
We actually thought about doing a "how long do these last" video, but the logistics of me conducting such a test was time and cost prohibitive. The number of cuts I would need to make as well as the amount of fabric I would need to waste while making those cuts is more than I was willing to do for this product comparison. We also checked into a machine that would hold the blades and test the cuts, but again, way more money than I was willing to spend to do a product comparison. This was the next best thing for me - testing the smoothness of the blades, the number of layers I could easily cut, as well as the price and comparing that to the other brands. With the discount, these Fabric Hut blades are only $3.75 each which I think is very reasonable.

I don’t have a way to test how long they will last, as I said in the video, but this is from the Fabric Hut’s website about their Titanium Blades: “We created Titanium Coated Rotary Blades that can last twice as long as any other brand in the market for half the price... Having a rotary cutting blade that stays sharper longer and gives a good clean cut every time.” I have used my current titanium blade for several projects and have found that it has stayed quite sharp.

Please contact the company. They have excellent customer service. You could see in the video that the blade worked well for me with up to 16 layers. If you are having trouble with cutting 2 layers, you need to contact them and let them know they are not working for you. This is not my company - I simply tested the blades for them and I stand by my review.. I have used these blades in the past and have never had an experience with them skipping.
