I don't buy fat quarter bundles anymore. There are often fabrics in it, which I don't like. Maybe I dislike the motifs or the contrast in combination with other fabrics. What I do is assemble them by myself. Very easy, when an online shops offers the whole line of a designer. I found a shop where I can select different sizes of cutting. Even fat quarter size.

I have all of those except the Wonder Cut. I love the slotted trimmers, but my absolute favorite is paper sheets. I like Thangles but the sheets work best. I have the Triangulations as well and like that. I think these are the most accurate for me.

As usual, great info! I love that you showed us the different rulers in detail. By the way, I just made a bunch of pinwheels using the pressing marker with solution (which I got at the KC retreat). Great tool! I may invest in the Essential Triangle Tool. Gee, just when I thought I had all the rulers I needed...

I love this video but I have one question. When you mark the corner stopping point in the beginning, you are doing this on the back of the quilt top, or on the front? Back makes sense to me, but then I’d need to lay the quilt top on top of the borders to attach them, right sides together, of course. 😊
@joyfulandmerryquilting
@joyfulandmerryquilting 6 күн бұрын
Yes - you mark the back of the quilt top with the dots. The borders are placed under the quilt top and just smooth them together (do not stretch them), and pin in place.

There’s a few ways to do mitered corners. Math really isn’t necessary. Just have your strips be at least 4 inches longer than the sides. Find the centers of your strip and sides. Pin accordingly so you have an even amount hanging off the sides. Mark the 1/4” in and sew from 1/4” mark to 1/4” mark back stitching at each start and stop. Proceed with folding and marking your line to sew the corners.
@joyfulandmerryquilting
@joyfulandmerryquilting 6 күн бұрын
It really depends on the number of border strips and the width of each border. You could run out of fabric if you have large borders or several borders that need to be marked. I find that doing the math keeps me in check.

So the points are perfect but the seams/seam allowance is wonky? Guess it’s the lesser of two evils…
@joyfulandmerryquilting
@joyfulandmerryquilting 6 күн бұрын
My seam allowances weren't "wonky" - but there are occasions when just sewing the 1/4" seam is difficult if you can't see exactly where the point is. It may be just a tiny bit off and with the marked dot, you can line everything up perfectly. If your seams are "wonky" you may need to check to make sure your 1/4" seam allowance was accurate and redo the block if it's too far off. Good Luck!

I have the 17" Olfa. It is too big and unwieldy and I never use it. I recommend thinking through the size of blocks you would normally use a rotating mat for. I actually need it more for small blocks and should have bought a smaller one. I bought the larger one thinking I wanted the flexibility for a bigger block. But my cutting table is not large and there just isn't room to keep it handy and rotate it. I have to sit it on top of my regular 35x25 cutting mat. One of my most regretted purchases, even though I got at a discount.
@joyfulandmerryquilting
@joyfulandmerryquilting 10 күн бұрын
Thanks for the tips! I agree - it's so important that we think about each purchase we make and what would work best for our particular quilting agendas. That certainly would save us a lot of money as well as products that we just don't end up using! Thank you!

I have the Olfa rotating mat that is circular with the scalloped edges - it is my favorite!!!! This is the main mat that I use for trimming when piecing blocks. I have tried a few other rotating mats that were square and the circular style is far superior. The square mats you have to 'find' the edge of the top layer to turn but with the scalloped edges it is very easy to turn without having to think about it. I also have not had an issue with the mat moving at all while cutting - at the beginning you could see the Martelli / lazy susan style mat moving a little while cutting.

You do the best comparison video's of quilting supplies I have ever seen! I appreciate the work you do to bring these to us. Over the years I have bought both size of the Olfa Mats, the Martelli Mat and I just got the Classi Creations Mat. I grab either of the two Olfa Mats If I am in a hurry to trim some blocks or don't have much trimming to do. The Martelli mat comes out when I am going to be doing lots of trimming because I like the spinning feature much better. All three of these mats I bought 15 - 16 years ago and of these 3, I really like the Martelli Mat the best, because it is much sturdier. The rotating mat I have from Martelli, is made similar to the Classi Creations Mat. In fact one of the selling features of the Martelli Mat at the time, was it could be used to decorate and put icing on cakes. It actually came with a cloth cover to place on the main surface to use for stability in keeping the cake boards from moving. It's like a pastry cloth I have for rolling out pies. I think you could do the same with the Classi Creations rotating board for rectangular cakes. I think I would like to try the Creative Grids mat and use that instead of the Olfa mats. If I could find a coupon or sale on it, I would consider it.

I got a round mat by Sue Daily when I was at Quiltcon. It was offered by my local quilt shop's booth, so I wanted to support them. It's 10" in diameter and spins like a dream. I don't remember if it's self-healing or not, but it's pink for Breast Cancer. It has 1/4" markings, but they are not labeled. So, some good, and some not so good!

My Martinelli spinning mat also came with a pressing pad. It turns so much better than the others that I use it a lot, but the feel of my blade on the non-healing surface feels uncomfortable.
