Good video, Matt. I have noticed that the difference between selecting sky in Lightroom and Photoshop show a much more dramatic difference. Photoshop is very precise in selecting sky, and Lightroom can be downright goofy at times, but always less accurate even when it's doing a fairly good job. I notice this especially around things like tree branches or a bird in the sky, etc. Anyway, thanks, Matt. Good tip on the feathered brush.

Have you thought that the algorithm for such a selection may never be the same, even for the same image? It would be interesting to try a selection on image A, then close image A, reload image A and repeat the same type of selection. Possibly, the results (for the same image) might be different, at least to the same extent as these differences that you found between Photoshop and Lightroom for different images. This thinking is conditioned by my disbelief that the software can treat such hairy structures the same every time (we know that when we record in JPG format, we always record a slightly "different" file, even if you haven't edited anything).

Great video as always! Matt, you cover the nuance no one else thinks of. One thing I'd add to this, as very much a non-export in PS, when it comes to just quickly cutting out a subject to get a transparent background, I've found that oddly Adobe Express does a better job than Photoshop! It cuts cleaner, misses less of the subject, and all with fewer clicks!

there must be some workaround or tricky way to get a lightroom selection into photoshop for compositing or whatever??

I’m thinking you should have also taken a screenshot (making sure it is the same size on the screen as the LR screenshot and compared both screenshots. This way you could be certain that the differences you see have nothing to do with the screenshot resolution vs the photo/mask resolution

At that zoom level it doesn’t have anything to do with resolution. Any adjustments larger or smaller are negligible. No need to match sizes exactly.

Instead of subtracting with the brush, try subtracting the background

I've shown that in several other videos, but it usually doesn't work as well as the brush in cases like this.

Thanks, Mac. Maybe it's me, but LRC/CR are beginning to look like stand-alone products as opposed to working hand-in-glove with Photoshop. Too much overlap.

It may be you... the rest of the world (and just about everyone that I teach) wants more PS features in LR so they have to use PS less. As for overlap... these are two different features with two different needs. You may want to make a subject brighter or darker, so of course you need that in Lightroom/ACR. But you may also want to change a subjects background which is a Photoshop job, so don't you also need the same feature? I guess they could name it different and I feel like just as many people would complain that naming conventions aren't consistent ;-)
