Hi all, today's video was a challenge to film! To get more space for two machines in cabinets, I decided to film outside. As soon as I started there were planes, trucks, weed whackers, and a hurricane! Well, some strong winds anyway. I hope you liked it, even with all the distractions! If you did, give it a thumbs up. Why not subscribe to my channel and hit that little bell so youtube can let you know when I upload another video. Thanks for watching! Bye for now!

Hi Ollie, I have a Singer 478 that is a step above the one you showed. I paid 10 bucks for it at a thrift shop and it came with the flat Stylist cams, which alone were worth the price of the machine. The 478 is almost identical except it has those decorative cams extending the number of stitches it does and does just so so buttonholes. It is not the greatest machine in my collection, but I wanted a low shank, cheap machine for doing a few things that my Singer Touch and Sew used to do. ( it doesn't) This machine was sorely in need of oiling and cleaning, didn't come with a cabinet or even a case. The motor still sounds good and now is working well...or will until the plastic gears go. I'm not sure why anyone would confuse either of the Stylists you showed with Touch and Sew class machines. I don't find there is any similarities with them. I had a T&S for over 45 years, loved it and used it in classes,let my students use it when their machines didn't work and for home decorating projects and it sewed and sewed....until one day... it didn't and that was the end of my love affair with my T&S. Of all the new and vintage machines I have that machine did the best buttons of them all. U was hoping for a decent satin stitch with the 478 and got an adequate one, but that's about all it gave me. Still....for 10 bucks...how could I let it sit in a dusty old thrift shop and not take it home? lol

Not being able to leave sewing machines in thrift stores is how I've ended up with so many of them. 😆 I use my 476 a lot. It has some quirks, like the reverse getting stuck from time to time. Overall though, it has a nice stitch and is easy to use. She's already had a gear change. A previous owner swapped them out for modern plastic gears. I'm not sure how long they'll last but so far so good. Out of the T&S range and the Stylist range, I'd have to say Singer got more things right with the Stylist. Apart from the plastic gears. Thanks for watching! 🙂

Like the video but I wonder if we are near a farm. Yes I have sewing machine cabinets blocking doors. It's time to move them around the house. Glad I found your videos again.

I love the two tone colour of the Singer 476K! I also like that the drawers are functional and that there are two leaves instead of the one. I try to avoid buying sewing machines with plastic gears and parts. I bought a plastic second hand machine once before (I think it was a Singer) and I was so disappointed when the reverse button broke. Now I stick with metal machines.

I need to avoid buying sewing machines in general... my mudroom is getting a little full! 😆 Metal machines are definitely better! Having said that, the 476 does a better zigzag than my metal Janome. I just take it easy with it. I'm not a speedy sewist so don't mind going slow with the 476. I steer clear of heavy fabrics, bulk, and never sew over pins. Anything to keep too much pressure off those plastic gears! Thanks for watching! 😀

I believe that the 413 has reverse if you press the stitch control knob inwards?
@SimplyStitchy
@SimplyStitchy Жыл бұрын
I believed so too... until I got this one. Not sure why it doesn't reverse yet as I haven't taken it apart. The stitch knob is capable of twisting left to right but that's all the movement it has. It's a mystery... but then the poor thing has had a bit of a hard life. It might not even be the right stitch knob for this machine. Thanks for watching 🙂

Hello Olwen, that was interesting, all stylists just so slightly different, my 466 is more like your 476 only difference mine has a feed dog adjustment button, which for me was great because with the zig zag and adjustable presser foot it’s great for appliqué and that’s why I went for it, although we knew it needed a new cog and playing with, in total it cost us to buy and to fix £35, like you say you have to weigh it up, is it worth it to rescue and fix? who knows maybe in a good few more years they may have more historical interest, good job there’s people like us to keep them existing. 🧢 Hat update, I made my first Bucket Hat! 😁i just followed your vid on putting a your hat together, behold I have a very nice hat, it was fun and I can’t wait to make more, so thank you for the inspiration, oh and I did it on my 1936 Singer 99.

I hope they become more popular over time. The Singers from the 70s and 80s get such a bad rap that people usually bypass them. Which is a shame, even with the motor problem, my 413 stitches beautifully. They are good machines. A lot better than most people give them credit for anyway. You got yours at a great price! Way to go on your hat! I bet it looks fantastic! Thanks for watching. 😀

Interesting my 413 has no issue with Shmetz needles. It was my mother in Laws and it suffered a gear failure fixed with the help of Andytube. Your 413 does have reverse if it works You depress the stitch length knob.

AndyTube videos are brilliant aren't they? My 476 is the only one of my machines that has an issue with Schmetz. She loves Klasse though! My 413 doesn't have reverse. It probably should have but it doesn't. I've wiggled, depressed, pushed, pulled, and turned that stitch knob to within an inch of its life. It doesn't move to allow the machine to go backwards. To be honest, the state my 413 is in, I'm surprised it goes forwards! Although I have given the machine a clean and oiling, I have yet to take it apart to see what's going in inside. But that's a topic for another video! Thanks so much for watching! :D

Hmmm... my 413 looks exactly like yours (it's in the same cabinet as your 476) and it DOES have reverse... you simply push the stitch length knob in. And it takes Schmetz needles just fine.

Several people with 413s have told me that... so much so, I'm starting to feel deprived. But - this one... doesn't have reverse. I know that's weird... but there it is. My 413 isn't in the best of health. Someone at some point in the past took it apart and messed with it. That's why there is a cable sticking out where there shouldn't be. From memory - it's been a while since I had a look at the 413 - the stitch knob is solid. There isn't a separate middle part to push. But even so - I did push it. Pull it. Twist it and turn it. No Joy. There is no reverse! Not one I can access anyway. I need to spend time taking it apart to see what mischief a previous owner got up to. Because I think they botched it. It's the 476 that doesn't like Schmetz. I also find this weird as it's the only one of my machines that doesn't and Schmetz is my go-to brand. But... meh... it's over 50 years old and entitled to be quirky. Thanks for watching 🙂

@@SimplyStitchy Yeah, if you can't push in the stitch control knob for reverse, I'd say someone was seriously mucking around inside of that machine. I just finished restoring mine, they're a very solid machine when in good operating shape, worth taking apart and taking stock of the innards. The jaggy straght stitch on yours is not normal, either. Good luck when you do it!

A useful 'tour' of the machines, but so hard to hear clearly with so much background noise going on. It would be better to add the commentary later on if possible.

Yes, totally agree! The sound was hampered quite a bit. I was using an external mic but it was just so sensitive it picked everything up. In hindsight, I should have done a voice-over. I'm sorry about the quality of that video but hopefully, the subtitles helped a little. Thanks for watching 🙂

Hi Linda, Unfortunately, I can't alter the sound on this video as it's over a year old. Comparing the two Singer Stylists was filmed outside which really didn't help with the volume. I don't film outside anymore for that very reason. To counteract the poor sound in some of the earlier videos, I have made sure they all have subtitles. Sound is something I'm striving to improve on as the channel moves forward. I can only apologize that some of my earlier work wasn't up to scratch.
