I thought that's because men's jeans are literally based on the size of their waist and inseam. Like if they buy a 34x30 it means a 34" waist, 30" inseam, right? IDK. Whereas with women you have both a waist and hip measurement that have to be taken into account. But i agree there's no reason they couldn't call a 16 like 38"waist x 45"hip or whatever it is and then have maybe a few different variations in the ratio

There is a kinda interesting history of sizing in women’s clothes in the US. If I recall, it kind of comes down to the greed of capitalist retailers trying to increase profits. There was a time when the government regulated clothing sizes . I think it was the department of weights and measures. I would love for us to return to that, it would make shopping easier. It might also take the negative reaction people have to the number on the tag. IDK, but it might make for an interesting video and could include vintage finds.
@LizCowanSC3 жыл бұрын
That would be really interesting! I remember reading somewhere that each company has their own fit model (their version of a size six, I think) and they size up or down from there. This is why sizes vary so much - there’s no standard everyone has to follow. And then there’s vanity sizing, which is a whole different story. 🙄 I wish women’s sizing was done like men’s, especially pants, with actual waist measurements, instead of some arbitrary size number that really doesn’t have any true meaning.

I know this is frustrating, but I saw something recently from a plus-size patternmaker that opened my eyes to this. It's actually a really good thing that sizing and proportions are different across brands. If every brand used the exact same measurements and sizes, every size 14 would either fit, or no size 14 would fit. So instead some have smaller waists but bigger butts or hips or thighs, and some use a different proportion with a larger waist and smaller elsewhere. This way, you can find the brands and styles that work for you, and stick with them. If every brand was the same, it's far more likely that nothing would work than that everything would.
@yamisabaku3 жыл бұрын
Ok, so I'm a pattern maker and worked with some fashion designers and I learnt that companies have a model to be their basic size. So let's say the model they choose to be their basic size, say to be their small size in this case, is skinnier than the average person, their basic pattern will be also like that. Then after they make their small size pattern they will produce the other sizes based on this person, sometimes from a small size to medium size will be 4" around bigger than the small, sometimes it's only 2". No company uses the same model to produce their basic pattern so that's why it's different everywhere and sometimes they keep on using the same basic pattern from 30 years ago, like Chanel. Dont get me wrong I find this sooo stupid because everyone is shaped different so to base their basic size from someone who's not average is really unrealistic 🤷🏾♀️

@shawnennigans3 жыл бұрын
I could probably explain some of the sizing. I’m a stylist for Stitch Fix and we focus a lot on denim fit and finding clients the perfect pair. There’s 14 and then there’s 14W, same for 16 there’s about 2-3 different sizes in between those two, so think of it as a straight vs curvy fit (it’s a weird way to size and probably confusing for lots of people.) They fit differently for a few reasons. There’s the idea of having something for everyone and different body types having different needs for rise, inseam, and silhouette (straight, skinny, boyfriend, mom etc.) but there’s also that it’s a new market for a lot of brands and they’re still doing research on what will boost their feedback for plus sizing and work best for plus clientele so many brands are continually adjusting their fit to accommodate focus group feedback etc to serve clients better. My best advice is keep trying for content but also rely on your best-fitting brands when you truly want a new or different pair. Wash can also impact fit depending on whether it was garment dyed or pre-dyed prior to construction but can account for the entire difference in sizing. I hope this helps!

Hi Carrie, so about those vintage Lees. Any jeans from 90s or older you should size up about 1-2 sizes! So for a modern 12, look for size 14. Love your content Carrie! Madewell jeans actually run big on my body 🤷🏻♀️ I’m almost always a 10, but at Madewell I’m a 29/8 or 28/6 depending on the cut. Maybe I’m crazy, but I actually like that different brands size differently-maybe that’s an unpopular opinion! But it’s like once you figure out which brand has the right proportions for your body-you stick with them! I think that a universal size 10, 16, 20 wouldn’t account for the many different proportions we all have. Some brands size for larger thighs, thinner waists. Some size for proportional waist and thighs, some for larger waist skinner thighs. It seems like Madewell, Wild Fable and AE are the brands that size in proportions that are amazing on you! Wild Fable actually doesn’t work for me in any size because the proportions are just off for my body type, whether I try smaller or larger sizes. Keep up the amazing work-you’re a rockstar!

“Your weight and size is the most uninteresting thing about you” YES GIRL PREACH! 🙌🏻 This needs to be your new mantra. Also all of my jeans become stiff and feel smaller after washing them, but they always loosen up again after wearing them for awhile (I never put my jeans in the dryer). But for the jeans to shrink that much from a washing machine.. I’d never buy from that brand again. Weird fabric!
@Zahh19983 жыл бұрын
Thank you for being so body positive. My whole life I’ve struggled with being a weird size & not fitting into much. I got really into sport, and got to an AUS 10. Was that size for years. But crept back up to an AUS 12 after school. Because work life & less time for sport. Then due to COVID, no sport. And the same jeans I always buy (size 12) I didn’t fit in. I was replacing a size 10 that ripped. 10 didn’t fit, 12 didn’t fit & I got so upset having to go up to a size 14. But you’re helping me realise that the brand simply changed their sizing, not me. Thank you
@Melissa-cl2rf3 жыл бұрын
If you really want to provide a reference point, maybe provide measurements if you're comfortable doing that? This whole vid and many vids on your channel are prefaced on the fact that numbered sizes are NOT a good reference point. Therefore, you saying what you could size up/down in is not that helpful (if your goal is reference).
@ambersmith26123 жыл бұрын
I would love measurements. It's so hard to tell if someone's body is similar to yours by looking at it
@katecoderre24383 жыл бұрын
I think that’s a good idea, however she would likely have to buy 3 different sizes of the jeans to provide accurate measurements for each. I think she uses the reference from the size of jeans she bought to gauge whether the jeans run large or small.
@Melissa-cl2rf3 жыл бұрын
@@katecoderre2438 lol I meant HER measurements, not the jeans - it hadn't even occurred to me my comment could be read in that way... sorry! My point was: whether jeans run large or small is arbitrary if there's no absolute size to compare them to. Hence, Carrie could BE the absolute size by providing her measurements on the day she tries them. Bc while a size 16 dress could measure very differently, 16 inches (or centimeters) will be the same everywhere and on everyone.
@katecoderre24383 жыл бұрын

I usually wear a 14 but I had to size up to a 16 in Good American jeans. I also wear the good legs version. I wash them and hang them to dry. I appreciate that they offer a long inseam in some of there jeans. I am 6’2” and the long length fits me perfectly.

I have that same pair of Madewell mom jeans (Melva) and I have two pairs: one in a 31 and one in a 32. I’m normally a size 31 in Madewell jeans, especially the ones with some stretch, but get a 32 or a 33 in the pairs with no stretch. That particular pair has no stretch, but they really do loosen up as you wear them and the denim relaxes after a day or two. The 32 fits me perfectly and the 31 is almost too tight on day one, but after a day or two the 31 relaxes a bit but is still very fitted and the 32 relaxes and is almost too big. I think that particular pair is kind of tricky to find your perfect size in. Loved the video Carrie! ❤️

Med. did refer to length. Misses actually refers to "womens" but if they are vintage, a size 16 would be smaller than todays 16.

Carrie!!! Keep the Madewell jeans! You could probably shrink them to the perfect size, and also with all the sitting and lounging in quarantine, I think they would be perfect! Also vintage jeans are so tricky! I wear a modern 6 or 8 but need a vintage or non-stretch 10 or 12!

I do think it's important to separate sizing issues from manufacturing issues. It's clear that many large commercial brands struggle with quality control. I can't even tell you the number of times I bought the same jeans in the same cut in the exact same size but in different colors, and they fit completely differently. We should be demanding better quality control from our clothing manufacturers, especially when paying $100 for a pair of jeans.
