I was 16 when homecoming came out and couldn't relate to these kids and i was their age and I found them incredibly annoying,boring,and cookie cutter. The thing is, I WANT to love MCU Spider-Man, but I hate it. They can do something great, something special, and most importantly, a true Spider-Man. The foundations are there, but the fact that it's in the MCU, and that Modern Hollywood films are so against letting the directors do their thing, with the scource material greatly hold MCU Spider-Man back. It also takes so many notes from Miles, which hurts both characters reputation. But if they did it right, he can be an excellent adaption of Ultimate Spider-Man. Where it teaches the lesson of a youngster in a world of big heroes, that becomes something unique and honestly the best of the best, that even the young can do great things, and take on responsibility. A different thing to Tobey, but like Tobey, a true adaption of what Spider-Man would be, COULD be. Just give Tom a good dam. director that loves and cherishes the character's lore, that is allowed to fray from the requirements of the MCU, and Tom will get to play a Spider-Man that he deserves to play.

Something that I really like about MCU Spider-man is how he investigates and works at fighting the antagonist before things can escalate. As much as I love Raimi's Spider-man, he only ever seemed to _react_ as opposed to _act._ He never interrogated people, he never went looking out on patrol for the antagonist, and he never planned ahead. He only ever retaliated towards fights, and if the antagonist got away, he would wait around for them to do something else. Even in TASM, Peter only tried to track down Conners to get the picture for the Bugle (at least he actually followed Conners into the sewers after the high-school fight as opposed to just leaving the scene in a completely different direction to wait for him to show up again). When you think about it, the MCU Spider-man would happen to the plot, while the plot would happen to the previous iterations
@moviehermit56314 жыл бұрын
@Lwandile M Although, one of his jobs (basically his main job) is taking pictures of Spider-man. While they are in very different situations (one spends most of the movies at college, the other is still in high school/ solo universe vs MCU), I still can't get over the fact that he would just leave the scene without chasing the bad-guy he can easily catch up to. Plus, MCU Spider-man does face consequences for his investigations (detention at school and having his suit revoked). Everything is pretty much a matter of circumstance as well as what universe they're in. I love all the different versions of Spider-man we've got, I'm just getting a bit tired of hearing everyone hate on the MCU version because he isn't in his prime within the first movie like the others, as well as how they've had to integrate him into the expanded universe (if they had the rights to him earlier, the character would have been very different).

Mason Sizemore No you misunderstand. They call him Iron boy because they replace Uncle Ben with Iron Man thus replacing Peter’s own personal motivation for becoming Spider Man. Tony being there all the time and giving him a suit takes away a LOT of Peter’s autonomy. He already was an established hero in the MCU. Why did he have to have Tony motivate him to dig deep and be a hero?
@masonsizemore5224 жыл бұрын
Charming Blerd having tony be one of his main motivations to fight makes a lot of sense and serves as a smooth transition into the mcu especially due to how late into the mcu he was introduced because of the the sony / marvel deal. personally i think having tony be sort of like an uncle ben figure to peter is a really cool way to keep his character and this depiction of spider-man feeling fresh.

Something I feel that the MCU nailed with Spidey is incorporating his youth and his school life into the plot itself. In the Raimi and Webb movies, Peter would basically become *"THE"* Spider-man in his prime in the first movie for each. In this interpretation, he stays young, he's still figuring things out and it'll take some time until he's at the top of his game. It's also got a bit more relevance to the audience. In the MCU Peter deals with his aspirations of becoming part of something big get in the way of his real life, and he gets a reality check when he too over-extends himself as he genuinely believes he's anything but a kid who should focus on school. And then in FFH, he deals with the stress and anxiety of his responsibilities, he doubts himself and believes someone else would be better at doing his job than himself. He learns that he shouldn't try and be someone else because that's what everyone expects, he should just be the best form of himself for the sake of being himself. The previous iterations have done a great job at being relevant to the character, but unless it's relevant to the themes, plot, and character arc, it can start to get a bit stale. Especially if it's applied to a character that is part of a completely different world .

No Spider-Man other than Tom Holland was written to be a bitch like you just described. The only time any film Spider-Man thought somebody else should do his job was in the second Toby movie when he lost his powers. He was incapable of helping so he gave up on it but Tom Holland’s Spider-Man was just a bitch who got bullied by a kid shorter than him and was never even beat up by his bullies like the other two. He’s a wimp he’s a bitch he’s stuck up he’s not funny he’s not clever he even acts dumb as rocks sometimes like there was never moments when Toby or Andrew almost killed an innocent kid because they were stupid. You’re idolizing something new because the cgi looks good go fuck your self and your opinions.

@@nickname2239 And then there's the opening of TASM 2 where Peter is goofing around while letting the truck ram through cars, and shoving people across alleyways, there's quipping, and then there's being reckless. Plus, how many bullies actually beat up kids these days? Now it's verbal, ties to social media, etc. And while the MCU flash may not be a big jock, he's still got more character than the previous versions combined. I wouldn't be surprised if that kid whined about the flawed and realistic, Peter B. Parker being the mentor in _Into the Spider-verse_ instead of the perfect blonde Peter who had his life entirely together with no problems.
@robl0xgamer2584 жыл бұрын
@@moviehermit5631 is it bad that mcu spidey is my favorite? I really like this iterations since it explores the themes of Peter's self doubt within himself, heck even the subtle but huge scenes of peter being pushed to the brink because of the combination of his bottled up self-doubt and PTSD (seeing tony die and the IW+EG events. I love how it makes modern teen problems come to light while still incorporate them into this version of the character, and I love it! I don't think none of the iterations of movies really capture the actual spiderman vibe, they all have personality and stuff from certain comics to both have an actual story while still highlighting the good core values of the character. My favorite versions are MCU spidey, Ps4 spidey and ITSV miles morales
@moviehermit56314 жыл бұрын
@@robl0xgamer258 It’s completely valid for MCU Spidey to be your favourite. Each version stays true to the character, and just because the writing isn’t the same as Raimi’s (who basically helped kick start the superhero movie genre) doesn’t mean it’s bad. Raimi’s taught us about responsibility and sacrifice. Webb’s taught us about consequence. MCU taught us about growing up. PS4 taught us about perseverance ITSV taught us about identity. And PS5 Miles Morales taught us about community Each of these are core aspects of the character, and just because something isn’t as nostalgia as Raimi’s or as stylish as ITSV, it doesn’t mean that it being your favourite is bad. Using CGI doesn’t make the movie a cheap soulless product, having Peter be a kid among world famous heroes instead of the only superhero in the entire world doesn’t make him any less of a Spider-man, and having stories more relevant to current struggles faced by many people doesn’t make it a betrayal of the character.

Peter isn't just some goofy, good-natured kid that naturally wants to see everyone do well. Peter is Holden Caufield with superpowers. He's a bit of a jerk and a know-it-all. And being Spider-Man let's him be those things out loud without repercussions. But he's also a kid that wants to be part of the in-crowd, but abhors everyone that's in it. I honestly relate and love MCU Spider-Man It's definitely at my top 5. I Will admit it has problems and it's not my favorite or I would even call the definitive version of Spider-Man but I still find that as a great version of him It depicts a teenager pretty well, a man child who has people who looks up to responsibilities and things He needs to take care of, He thinks that he knows the world inside and out when really he still has so much to learn And we do still see things that happen to Spider-Man, Like the dude goes to stop a bike thief, accidentally web someone to his own car believing he was trying to steal it and spends most of his time just hanging around waiting for someone who needs help. He's one of the only heroes who would probably help an old lady cross the street And even in the end of that day of helping people out his backpack gets stolen and he can't find it anymore causing him to have to carry all his books by hand. I also love How even though Uncle Ben isn't mentioned once you still know that Uncle Ben played a big role for Peter, many many times throughout homecoming Peter is told to stay put in not to intervene, But we all know what happened The first time he didn't. The moment the shows is the most is the party scene. Peter looks an explosion from far away that has nothing to do with his neighborhood or anybody he cares about, And if he doesn't show up he's going to embarrass himself and net for saying that Spider-Man was going to come. Peter can quite literally get the fame that he wants at school but he throws it away just so you can go stop something that has absolutely nothing to do with him. He is at heart Spider-Man

I wouldn't say Tony replaced Ben?- Ben still existed and it's somewhat clear that something terrible happened after Peter got his powers, which made him become Spider-Man. Tony was basically a mentor, someone who could help Peter out and teach him a little bit more about responsibility. Of course, Peter already knew about being responsible [in terms of spider-man], but in the MCU- It seems Peter is a bit more reckless, he isn't an adult after all.-

Peter's role models after Uncle Ben's death are rooted in his own mythos, usually Kurt Conners or Otto Octavius. In fact, Peter would rather ask Reed Richards or Dr. Strange for help than Tony Stark. Peter usually has disdain for arrogant personalities like Tony Stark's, though he respects his intellect and on rare occasions acts just as arrogantly. I don't think I would characterize the Raimi Spider-Man as being driven by guilt or another man's vision. We're all shaped by our parents and molded by our past mistakes. Many people have to live with significant failures that change the direction of their lives. That doesn't rob them of personal agency. It just gives them a richer, more complex inner life. I don't hate the Holland era Spider-Man. It's just very underwhelming. He's just a generic nice kid. He isn't presented as a character with either the personal resilience or the scientific resourceful of the Raimi version. He leads a consequence free life in which everything turns out alright and Tony Stark solves all his problems.

I would say giving up every aspect of your personal life for the greater good is personal resilience. Also past the like one hour mark Stark doesn’t solve a single problem for Peter. I feel like everyone forgets the “if you’re nothing without this suit then you shouldn’t have it”. Yes, Spider-Man relying 100% on technology is dumb and the movie agrees with you. That’s why he doesn’t. Also as the MCU spiderman stands, he’s been framed for the murder of a beloved hero and has had his identity revealed. That problem has gone unsolved for nearly a year now.

great video. I have been seeing a lot of hate for MCU Spider-Man by raimi fanboys claiming its not the real Spider-Man(acting like the mcu did a luke skywalker last jedi to spidey) but me being a hardcore Spider-Man comic reader it is further from the truth. Pretty much raimi's Spider-Man is the classic lee/romita sr type vibe to the character. Where's the MCU Spider-Man they wanted to do something new but still accurate. So they took the avengers Spider-Man(Spider-Man annual 3, avengers 236-237, avengers vs thanos and new avengers peter) This peter wants to be an avenger and is more clumsy trying to prove himself, trouble with a suit tony stark made for him and a AI(iron spider in the comics) and screwing up sometimes as well as needing mentors to help him get better, not feeling he is good enough to be such a big time hero and turning down the big time to stick close to the ground. so raimis spidey maybe more accurate with the little details mcu Spider-Man is still just as accurate at the core and has more comic nods to things we have not seen before. Why they both are great adaptations. Ramis Spider-Man again shows how giant Spider-Man is to the world much like the video says. He is the greatest superhero in the world and Spider-Man 1 treats him like that. How the world views Spider-Man. MCU Spider-Man more goes in on the Spider-Man views the world. He was always the everyman, the small street level hero cleaning up the bigger heros mistakes. While the bigger heros fight earth ending threats, they forget the damage they may have caused resorts to street level threats. A lot of raimi Spider-Man fans also don't like iron man and hate how spidey views him as a mentor and father figure in the mcu(some think he is replacing uncle ben) again further from the truth. Comic wise tony did want peter to be a air to his throne and peter wanted a father figure and saw tony as that(civil war comic run) but of course they had a falling out. Instead the MCU kept them together and added the captain America comic mentor and captain Stacey mentor to tony as well. It would get annoying if every hero in the mcu was bitching at spidey and a mentor. Having iron man be the only one makes a better story. Uncle ben is still important as its the reason Spider-Man is Spider-Man. Peter has come to terms with this now and suits up for uncle ben. Iron man just became his mentor to better him in crime fighting much like the comics where peter is in need of mentorship from many hero's. Some also claim mcu peter is just miles morales(this is only in far from home with peter questioning if he can be a new iron man and this leads happy to say that's not him be Spider-Man, and of course ned is granke and he gets a lot of suits made for him till the end. ) it really is only small things they borrowed from the miles story. (again new avengers peter used tech to upgrade his suits a lot) Spider-man 1,2 and 3=classic lee/romita sr Civil war=lee/ditko, new avengers spidey Homecoming=new avengers spidey, spidey annual 3, avengers 236-237 spidey, lee/ditko(miles morales story for ned) IW and endgame=new avengers spidey, avengers 236-237 spidey far from home=Avengers vs thanos spidey, spidey annual 3, lee/ditko spidey.(miles morales for insecurity to be the new replacement for a dead hero and learning to not be that)

You can truly say that both these Spider-Man films are equally good with their own perspective if things and I think people should understand that homecoming has to be different from other Spider-Man films.
@Amory-wd3ws4 жыл бұрын
I was never a fan of Tom Holland's Spider-Man because those films ignored the important aspect of tragedy and struggle in Peter Parker's life--he was simply just given everything he needed by Iron-Man and never faced any legitimate struggles of guilt over the mistakes that he made in the past that should motivate him to be better.
@youfirst66114 жыл бұрын
In the MCU peter is defined by his desire to overcompensate for his mistakes. His first mistake was letting Uncle Ben die. In homecoming he’s trying to become and Avenger so he can stop even more crimes then he was before he met Tony. He didn’t feel like he was doing enough for the world and wanted a to contribute even more to society. Deliberately sabotaging his relationships with other people to priority his “responsibility”.Even going so far as to consider abandoning a regular life to completely dedicate himself to being Spider-Man. Until he realized that he wasn’t ready and he should stay “Friendly Neighborhood”. Confident that the Avengers would protect the earth until he was ready to join. In FFH because of his guilt complex over his inability to save tony thrust peter into 4 months of nonstop Spider-Maning to keep his mind distracted from grieving. And with the Avengers roster gone the world is asking if Spider-Man is apart of the new starting line up of the avengers. Despite peter wanting to stay friendly neighborhood. All these things way heavily on peter in the film until he breaks down crying in the plane with happy. Peter does feel guilt, he just doesn’t cry and mope every 10 minutes like Tobey. Even though I love those movies.

What’s so unique about both films is that the characters would actually work a lot better in each other’s universe. Holland’s Spider-Man/Peter is eager to be a hero, save people, prove himself or his mind, be responsible. That type of Spider-Man was needed in Raimi’s universe as it was directly after 9/11 and ppl needed a hero was eager to save them. Maguire’s Peter/Spider-Man was reluctant to be a hero, always doubted himself and wasn’t sure about his relationship with MJ. This character works perfectly within the MCU, as he’d be surrounded by more established characters, so it’d make sense for him to be a reluctant hero that people aren’t sure of. Also, the Raimi villain quips would so work in the MCU. Like imagine Dafoe’s Green Goblin or Molina’s Doc Ock fighting Iron Man, Cap and Black Widow and then Falcon and War Machine showing up.

At some point I did want to compare them and try fighting the case for which is better. Honestly? You can never compare them. Not only do I agree with what you've said, but it's also the chapters in their lives people have to take into consideration. MCU Spider-man is literally a kid who is still going through highschool. Rami Spider-man is Peter's transition from becoming a boy to a man. The film itself shows him graduating High School, moving out of Aunt May's place, and getting a job. These two Spider-men are literally in two different stages of their lives. You wouldn't compare a child to a grown adult so why do that here? You also have to think about the fact that, despite how we want to see it, MCU Spider-man movies are a piece of a puzzle while Rami's was able to do whatever they wanted. It was revealed that Tom's Spider-man would have multiple trilogies detailing different stages of his life. Eventually we could get a more grown-up Spider-man, but as it is now I am loving the slow progress.

It made it more human because everyone at some points had an identity crisis and with Peter having one too made us relate to him. Spider-Man 2 captured it perfectly. I find myself watching it every year to remind me that even though I have issues in my own life, that I shouldn't give up because Spider-Man himself went through the same thing. To me MCU Spider-Man's potential for being the 'working class hero' is completely squandered by putting him front and center of an intertwined corporate movie industry. When Civil War came out I was genuinely excited to see Spidey interact with all the other big players, and I really think they nailed the poor nerdy kid from Queen's in Civil War. Homecoming tried to end on a ground-level Spider-Man, but the Mouse decided it was time for him to go into space. If Raimi's trilogy was a love-letter to the classic Spider-Man comics, I was hoping MCU would be a similar love-letter to Ultimate Spider-Man comics. In both MCU and Ultimate, Peter-Man struggles to have his own identity amongst a universe of out-classed superheroes, but Ultimate nails the internal conflict. Spidey dies taking a bullet for Captain America, who's so focused on Ultimates v. Avengers (basically Utlimate Civil War) that he leaves him bleeding out AND THEN fights the Sinister Six to save his elderly Aunt and friends. Spider-Man isn't supposed to play with the other heroes, he's supposed to be the greatest one of them all. And time will tell with the MCU, but to me the best part about the character is that no matter how hopeless the struggle seems, this broke kid from Queen's does everything he can to save someone, or anyone he can. MCU Spider-Man wants to be a hero like the greats, but 'Spider-Man' just wants to do the right thing simply because he has the power to do so. To quote Aunt May "Sometimes, to do what's right, we have to give up the things we want most. Even our dreams" Edit: To editorialize a sort-of brought up point, I don't think Spider-Man ever needs to have an indentity crisis. I'm tired of seeing Uncle Ben get shot too, but really his origin is about as perfect as it gets. Spider-Man shouldn't need to find his identity. 'Spider-Man' is the identity. 'Spider-Man' is Peter Parker's redemption for being an irresponsible kid, literally it's the story of a boy taking all of the lessons he's learned and becoming a man. Edit: TLDR: being Spidey should suck a$$ and Peter-Man's motivation should come from internal 'ghosts' and a will to act on them
@terrancelee95034 жыл бұрын
Disagree with the idea Spider-Man shouldn’t play with other heroes. He’s got hero relationships and non-hero relationships. A character stuck between two worlds. Also don’t see a problem with Spidey going to space. Spider-Man helps wherever he can, big or small. He prefers being a ground level superhero, it just comes naturally to him and is what he’s used to, but doesn’t hesitate to involve himself in affairs larger than himself. A character forever stuck between two worlds.

@@terrancelee9503 I totally get that, and you've got a fair point. I just meant that its a little disappointing for me personally that Disney mandated a huge superhero crossover right after our introduction into MCU Spidey as a street-level hero. When Ultimate interpreted the character he was still slightly at odds with other superheros, with ol Captain America apologizing to Aunt May at his funeral that he told Spidey he wasn't ready to be a "real" hero.

I also think that the overall tone of homecoming makes perfect sense when you consider that this version of spider-man exists within the MCU. In Raimi's version he's pretty much the one true hero. He's the one who has to save everyone, while Tom's version of spider-man lives in the world where literal gods can drop down from the sky and save people. As good as spider-man is, he operates in the same system as the original Avengers and compared to them, he is the comic relief of sorts. He is just a kid, who has more experienced heroes to look up to, therefore, he doesn't have to be as serious and mature as Raimi's spider-man. So even the final scene being much smaller-scale and comical makes sense, when you consider his general stance within the MCU.
@nataograpishvili16624 жыл бұрын
@Always watching But he IS a child. In my opinion, him having a perfect Steve-Rogers-level sense of responsibility that cannot be shaken by anything would be incredibly unrealistic. You can see his battle with that sense of responsibility and you can see how he overcomes the desire to be just a teenager. Had he presented this unwavering sense of moral righteousness, he wouldn't feel real, he'd be just as bad as some of those one-sided villains that audiences hate. When it comes to choosing between what's right and what's convenient, he always goes for what's right. Judging him for wanting a normal teenage life at times doesn't make sense to me. Characteristically spider-man is meant to be quirky and almost childish, as long as he can get serious in big moments. When you take into account his age, his character makes sense and when you look at his stance within the entire MCU, the light-hearted feel of his movies also make perfect sense.

I could have seen a sinister six Arc where tombs was more of an amoral casual member than one with a real grudge against spider-man. And because he knows who the kid is and what he's capable of he considers them on equal terms and he could even throw centrist lines around like "a jobs a job kid, no hard feelings" and that could even play into the story later where he can no longer be amoral to the crimes of the Sinister six or watching peter put his life on the line again for the right thing and be capable of saving pete from making the sacrifice. I feel like they were open to a sinister six in universe with scorpion and vulture, and whoever else they literally had a lot of potential but hopefully we get a really good sinister six in the future

Great video! The way I view the different adaptations of movie Spiderman is by looking at their comic book counterparts (or let's say inspired to) Tobey as the 616 Spidey from the original comic Andrew as the Ultimate Spiderman(alternate universe) While Tom is somewhat of a Miles Morales Spiderman and I understand why the MCU used it as an inspiration for reinventing Peter as a character. If you would look closely you can see that it's also a timeline from the first up to the current version who holds the mantle of Spiderman and I love them all! I would like to explain more but that would take so much time. Btw I'm happy that this is an essay video that doesn't compare each Spiderman in a toxic manner unlike the other videos here on KZbin.

Suggestions from a patr(e)on: -the Pirates of the Caribbean films, perhaps the clash or synthesis of epic and absurd elements. -late Disney era reworking and/or subversion of earlier Disney fairy tale tropes e.g. gender-marking of action-princesses. -The variously woke and/or implicitly trans-exclusive elements of the Harry Potter films. -The Incredibles films - any take on either film. -Any of the man-child-must-grow-up tropes surfacing in the Judd Apatow and/or Kevin Smith films. -Lead franchise characters as apparent ciphers lacking real agency or arcs, as deployed in films like the John Wick, Mission Impossible or Jason Bourne series -Depictions of novel facets of psychology through characters, such as mindfulness, attachment theory, ASD and other neurodivergence, 12-step recovery, or MBTI types. -Novel character types and structures in anime from Ghibli and Miyazaki, such as the recurrent lack of villains/true antagonists.

Back in the day I would’ve compared the 3 of them to the animated, Christopher Daniel Barnes version (which is the quintessential version imo) but honestly? They’re all different versions, different iterations of him. They each have something special, they each bring something unique. I don’t think it’s fair anymore to compare them.

One of my only issues with mcu spiderman is that he doesn't feel like his own character he just feels like iron man jr because he just inherited all his stuff and is still trying to live up to him even though he's dead and I feel he relies on iron man way to much also in spiderman far from home there aren't any consequences or at least don't feel like there's any. In the spiderman comics and in spectacular spiderman whenever spiderman wins in a battle it effects Peter parker in a negative way and the characters react to it and it makes the stakes higher for the characters on a personal level which is more than I feel for the MCU version. (I know it's a run on sentence

He was literally outed as Peter Parker at the end of Far From home, and if that ain't consequences I dont know what is
@lightknight67494 жыл бұрын
@@frogston. fair point but I didn't like that part either because now either everyone knows he's spiderman which takes away a lot of missed opportunities for the characters including peter himself or they just magically give him his identity back which would feel like there are no consequences and everything will magically always get fixed and I like the consequences that happen to peter because it makes him feel real and gives him the everyman vibe.
@lightknight67494 жыл бұрын
@@frogston. you also gave me an idea about how he doesn't feel like his own character because every single villain he has faced so far in the mcu has been brought by iron man so spiderman himself doesn't even have his own villains in this universe, they ALL CAME FROM IRON MAN and it really upsets me because in the comics hes his own hero not iron man's sidekick and I worry that people will think spiderman was always iron man's sidekick which upsets me more because he was the first teenage standalone hero ( sorry for going on a tangent)
@fanfusion42764 жыл бұрын
LEO2001 I mean on the first film, his almost girlfriend moves away directly because of what he does. In the second film, he loses his identity which is probably going to be a big consequence because, unlike Homecoming, there’s nothing between FFH and the next Spider-Man that will compromise the storytelling. With Infinity War and Endgame, they needed Spider-Man in both of those movies and so weren’t really able to explore the whole Aunt May thing, but with FFH, it’s a direct continuation. Not to mention in both films, things are constantly getting screwed up for Peter because of his Spider-Manning until the ends do both movies where things get somewhat resolved. Which is basically what happens in the Raimi movies too. They, for the most part, had fairly happy endings. Not as happy as something like Homecoming, but the differences in tone fit and as the MCU movies grow darker, the endings get less positive. The arcs in Far From Home and Homecoming are also both about Peter becoming a standalone hero that had to act and had responsibility on his own. Also also Marvel does make serious movies when they have more serious characters (i.e Black Panther and the Captain America movies) imo.

What I like more about Tobey's Spider-Man is that he's The Hero. He isn't bound and is the figure. Spider-man may be a hero but in reality he just an underdog to the bigger known universe with all these hero's with powers who can do what he do but better. This is why spider-man is my favorite hero no matter the movies or comics is that he struggles as a hero and as peter parker, he don't do everything ok, he makes alot of mistakes to much to count, and pays a price for them, his love life is in shambles from being spider-man, people have got hurt because of him, peter and spider-man are one in the same, it the shift in balance between, because what ever the other due weights heavily on the other.

@Greg Elchert I kinda wish Toby was the one standing with Tony in Civil war. Honestly his Spider-Man makes more sense to be in that position then Tom's. Tony putting a kid at risk after being guilt tripped into the accords by a woman who lost hers in sokovia is nonsense. Also, Peter being Spider-Man since he was 15 then being apart of the avengers when he's in his early 20's is a way more interesting character to have for the Civil War Movies. He's established his enemies and fought them all multiple times. Gone through some shit, seen some shit. But honestly, if that spidey was in the airport fight he'd have wiped the floor with cap and most of the avengers cause none of them really know him. The only difference is they would have known about him.

Why? He repeatedly says that he acknowledges Spider-Man Homecoming as a good film. I’ll paraphrase something he said in one of this Spider-Man video essays (I think it was the first one he made): “Spider-Man Homecoming is a good movie. It’s just not a good Spider-Man movie. It has great pacing, great comedic timing, and some of the best visuals in any Spider-Man franchise. It’s just not a good Spider-Man movie at heart. Traditional Spider-Man themes and ideologies that make Spider-Man unique in the first place are either absent or misunderstood in Spider-Man Homecoming”. Let’s face it, he’s right. Anyone who knows Spider-Man not just from the movies, but from the source material, acknowledges that.

What really sets these two universes apart are the underlying narratives and ideologies. Tobey MaGuire’s Spider-Man is the everyday kid we can relate with. He’s broke, has terrible luck and is plagued with an overwhelming sense of guilt over the circumstances revolving around his Uncle Ben’s death. He almost never gets his way so we root for him when something finally does because we the audience know that feeling all too well. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man feels manufactured. I watch homecoming and feel no struggle because Iron man and the avengers will be there to save the day when Spider-Man can’t. There’s no monetary struggle and I feel no real connection to aunt may like I do with Sam Raimi’s trilogy. Another problem I have is the pacing. In the original trilogy they allowed you to establish who these characters are with slower sub plots that explored their personalities and fully fleshed out the characters. In Homecoming I felt like every scene was just rushing me to the next expensive set piece so we can showcase the incredible CGI. Lastly, and most important, the biggest difference for me here is heart. You can’t tell me when Aunt May gives her hero speech you didn’t feel like you could overcome your own obstacles, cause I did! Ok, rant over....oh and kick ass video!
