Andrew Garfield was the most hardcore fan of Spiderman of all three. Maybe Tom Holland is a fan, he said he would want to play spider on tour from The Impossible, lots of years before. But Andrew, we could feel how much passion he had for this character. From the video at SDCC where he's literaly shaking to the interviews with people saying he was actually teaching and working with the stuntmans about how Spiderman should move in real life. Andrew deserved better because that was his dream and he would give everything he could to make the best Spiderman ever and i think all the hate this movies recived because people literaly forgot original Stan Lee's work and praised only Raimi's interpretation maybe broke his heart. I know it broked mine. Until this day i get pissed about how sony destroyed TASM2 and sacrificed Andrew Garfield with no mercy. No closure. I love you, Andrew Garfield. You deserve everything.

The bit from ASM that always stands out to me is the bit just after Ben dies, where Flash comes up to Peter him and you think he is going to do his usually bully shit and you can tell Peter is like "Do anything and I will fucking kill you" and Flash just walks up to him, gives him a huge and says "I´m sorry, man." Giving that bit of extra humanity and respect to Flash earned the movie a ton of credit for me.
@ultimamage33 жыл бұрын
They didn't hug, dude. Flash did step up to Peter to try and talk to him but Peter shoves him against a locker. What happens there is instead of our expected reaction of Flash fighting back, he actually tries to empathize with Peter and says, "Feels better, right?" which immediately clues people in that his own aggression is because of a personal issue he's taking out on others. The kicker is he's the first person to even approach Peter that day even before Gwen shows up.

Even with the flawed story its just so fascinating to see Andrew's take on Spider-Man being more genuine. It helped too that unlike Tobey who never read much of the comics, Andrew has been a life long spider-man fan himself. Nice to see some proper love given to TASM. It was definitely weighed down by both the shadow of the Raimi movies, and the interference from the studio. If Marc Webb had complete control of the entire story, then the franchise would definitely have kept going strong. On another note, something to take into account is how TASM seemed to be heavily inspired by the Ultimate Comics - Ben's talk about Richard's philosophy was ripped straight out of the comic panels - Robo Rhino - Conspiracy involving Peter's parents - Telling his love interest his identity as Spider-man relatively early - Working with Doctor Connor's leading to a science experiment gone wrong - Peter and Harry being childhood friends because their dad's worked together is very similar to Peter and Eddie in those comics - Developing his suit and web-shooters in the basement - Electro's blue design - The Green Goblin created with the same formula that gave Peter his powers - Spider coming from Oscorp (I believe the original comics from the 60's just had it come from a public science exhibit) - Being very destructive when he first got his powers, even having an incident with Flash and basketball (the comics had him accidentally break Flash's hand, as well as join the basketball team until he learned responsibility)

After watching people on the internet argue about Spider-Man since at least 2012, it's just so refreshing to hear from people who really get it. Even in the comics, Spider-Man struggles with his role as a real-life-Marvel-mascot, because all of those things that make him a great character don't translate well to selling Hostess Fruit Pies, but it seems like movies make that poor-fitting role even worse. He's just not a natural action-hero type in the way that studios tend to make action movies now. Webb's movies were hobbled by a lot of problems, but they mostly got Peter and Garfield's take was as close to perfect as anyone could ask. (Or maybe part of the reason Webb's movies were so uneven is that the scripts and producers didn't quite know what to do with Peter Parker.)

Just to point out, Tom’s Peter does have a bit of a temper other than dismissing his classmates. He purposely wrecks Flash’s dads car with a set of bikes, knocks Flash out with a slap in their tour bus, insults Star-Lord’s favorite movie, taunts the Prowler after leaving him stuck to his car. Downside is that unlike Andrew, it only gets more shown whenever he is being Spider-Man while Andrew’s Peter has that edge.

This video was solid, and you've given me a lot of food for thought about the Andrew Garfield movies and his interpretation of Spider-Man. My only quibble is this: Your essay locks Peter Parker/Spider-Man into a static interpretation based on his traits as a teenager. All of the defining elements you cite are rightly parts of his personality _when he was a teenager_ , specifically during the first few years of his published stories. You haven't really taken into account that Parker evolved over time. There were a few comics that were published after Lee left the series, after all!
@commanderspyder54323 жыл бұрын
Most of those personality traits carried over to now though. The only major difference modern comic Peter and the original is that he's not really a jerk anymore, which we see in these movies; Peter's a dick in most of TASM1, but is much more like the friendly neighborhood hero we're used to in the sequel.
@MarcelLWalker3 жыл бұрын
I'm going to respectfully disagree that most of those personality traits carried over to his present. Sure, Peter's still funny and flirty and smart...but him not being a jerk is due more to him not having an identity as a _victim_ anymore. Somewhere 5-10 years along on his timeline, Peter's lived some real life and come through it, and as Spider-Man, he's highly regarded and respected by his peers. In ways, he's even seen as a veteran hero and a role model to younger heroes. His detractors are in the minority, and even Jameson isn't taken seriously. I find it telling of the character's fans, and MARVEL, that they're so reluctant to allow the character to be an adult. Do we prefer Spidey as a jerk? If so, it's not really his fault that he's got such perpetual bad luck. That's on us!
@commanderspyder54323 жыл бұрын
@@MarcelLWalker Did you read all of my comment? I literally say that Peter is no longer a jerk, because he's a fully grown adult, not a hormonal, angsty teenager. I never said I want him to go back to that (I hate when Marvel tried to reverse all his development with One More Day), I'm just explaining that he was a lot less likeable when he was a teenager, and we see that in these movies; after all, when is Peter a jerk in TASM2?

The thing is, Raimi focused on the tragic side of spider-man and built on that alone. Still created a masterpiece and we still got the spider-man feel. This is why my favorite movies are the raimi movies but my favorite individual spider-man will always be Andrew. Watch the spectacular spider-man and the ps4 spider-man and you'll realize Andrew is by far the most similar to them, he matches their charm, wit and fighting style. Even as a fighter, Andrew was the most "spidery" cause he showed the springy, quick movements and actually properly used his webs in combat. he truly fought like a spider. Tobey was more like a brawler. As for Tom....hes Ironman JR...im kidding., Tom got the naive and rookie spider-man down to the dot but his major major flaw as a character was that it felt like he always wanted to get out of ironman's shadow, which is annoying because Spider-man was literally the first teenager to not be in the shadow of another older hero.

This is why I adore Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man, he put through all of his heart and soul into the role and defines him what makes Spider-Man special and relatable in our lives.

I really hope we get to see Andrew return as his Spider-Man in No Way Home, as well as Tobey of course, that'd be phenomenal, and its crazy to think that we might get to see them again as both Spider-Man in less than 2 months from now

I don't particularly care for for ASM movies, but their portrayal of Spider-Man himself was on the money. I still think Spectacular Spider-Man represents the best interpretation of the character in non-comic form. He goes through all of the growth that Peter does in the ASM comics, but in a very streamlined but satisfying manner. The only one that compares is Spider-Man PS4. He doesn't quite have the megative impulses, but it's clearly still there since Otto, someone who is arrogant, petty and angry, serves as a direct foil for Peter, what Peter would be had he made the wrong choices, and you still see that conflict between self-sacrifice and his selfish desires toward the end of the game. It more reflects Peter further along in his growth (8 years specifically). I hope we see a little more personal stories for future Tom Holland films more in line with Homecoming, but less innocent Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Allow his character flaws to reveal themselves as a young adult in college.

I didn't expect the original comics to hot so close to home, I remember when i was bullied but a few years later I got a growth spurt and while the people I had a grudge with had already went elsewhere, the anger from that time never went away so whenever someone gave me a reason I would push back harder than what was reasonable and pretty much liked it.

I definitely forget myself sometimes, that Peter Parker is actually a bully. Beneath the jokes and low blows, he genuinely is a jerk to people he doesn’t like or if he’s in a crap mood. He still gets stepped over and he lashes out when things don’t go his way. We’ve seen it in almost all Spider-Man comics. One example from Ultimate is when Wolverine and Peter switched bodies but when he got his own body back not only did peter cuss out Wolverine, but began to make almost even racist remarks towards the whole of X-men. Ik the Ultimate universe in itself is Edgy, but Ultimate Spider-Man was a lot of people’s introduction and was a huge hit as well.

I'm so glad I'm able to watch the video. Ever since a traumatic experience in my life, my life and the way I see it has been very different. I'd say for the most part I've healed from it but now I'm looking for my identity and the one question that plagues me to this day is whether I'm still me if I'm playing a character I want to be. Very weird question. This channel and many like it have helped me find more of myself and helps me build that person to this day. I guess I realized that I didn't really know myself at all, and now I'm in the middle of finally being able to build my personality. That's where it's getting complicated for me because I'm to earnest to really feel good about the act because I feel like I'm lying. Anyway, this video helped with that question.

This is a very interesting version of Spider-man and, as I look back at the comics, absolutely how he was portrayed. But, personally, I think that the other version (if you simplify it, Raimi's version) holds up as well. It's just a massive shame that main stream media has leaned away from actually depicting this version of Spiderman. At least make him a different Spider-man in the multiverse in the comics. Give us another rendition of a movie Spider-man like that.

Damn, I always knew my boi Garfield-man was the best. had the first one on DVD as a wee lad, watched it almost constantly. I could recite the script by heart. While I can agree that holland may be objectively the best, he never really stuck with me like Andrew did. Andy Gorfeeld will always have a special, spider-man shaped place in my heart, not only as the first spider-man I grew up with, but as hero in general that I grew up with. 😊

THANK YOU FOR UNDERSTANDING PETER PARKER - I get so annoyed with how they portray Peter now because it isn't him Andrew Garfield truly was the closest movie version. Ultimate spider-man comics did a great job of portraying Peter's angst. I remember reading those comics as an angsty teenager and there is a line where Nick Fury tells him he gets it, he is a teen and has raging hormones and doesn't even now why he's blowing up... made me realize I was doing the same. All in all- love your videos man. Been watching for awhile but don't comment. Keep it up.

These Spidey essays are DOPE. So many are Raimi shills. Raimi made GREAT films with a GREAT character - he’s just not the definitive Spider-Man. I’ve always loved Garfield, and The Amazing Spider-Man is one of my favorite Spider-Man movies for all the reasons that you stated here.

It's cause the Raimi films over emphasized Peter as a pathetic love struck geek instead of an every man who grows beyond his nerd phase. The crux of Peter Parker's character that modern writers struggle with is that Peter's journey is about growth and not being a bullied teen or remaining a teenager. Peter Parker is the first superhero that actually grows up throughout his comics. But the films, especially Raimi's trilogy don't let him grow beyond being a geek. That's why Spider-Man 3 didn't work. The symbiote story was about Peter embracing his dark side and him having to grow beyond the darkness.

I feel like if Sony didn’t mess with TASM2 (like they did with Spider-Man 3), we could have had one of the best super hero trilogy ever. I’m the first movie, he’s a kid out for blood basically and just scratches the surface of being a hero at the end. Say his development is very similar to TASM2, by the end, he would truly become a person we could label as a super hero, really entraining what his character uncle taught him. And 3 could have potentially been about him at his ‘prime’ and basically being tested to his limit, to see if he can stick to his uncle’s teachings and when’s dad. Basically a coming of age for a super hero.

Wow, you actually made me reconsider TASM; thank you. I think the Parker Triangle is also exhibited nicely in the 1994 Cartoon; the Peter Parker I grew up with was such a loveable asshole haha. Thing is though, Maguire seems better represented in the games than in the films. He complains more, he quips more, he seems more on point with the triangle, if only a little. Ironically, I found the best display of his irreverence was in the Spider-Man 3 game, where he converses with characters like DeWolff: A far-cry from the dork in the respective film.

The Amazing films are still my favourite of the live action Spider-Man movies. None of them are perfect; the Raimi films got me into Spider-Man but after expanding into reading the comics, watching the shows, and playing the games, I was left wanting more. The Webb movies brought a more accurate Spider-Man in personality and visual aesthetics but the infighting of the studio and filmmakers is very evident and the overall narrative suffered. But not as much as I thought, thanks to your wonderful analysis. MCU Spidey brought him into the wider marvel universe but they became so concerned with that side of things, they forgot many aspects of Peter himself. Basically:- Raimi - Best Narrative Webb - Best Spider-Man MCU - Best Worldbuilding? I wish more people would take the time to see what each one brings as opposed to putting the others down in favor of their own. And whilst I will often say Andrew does so the most; they're all only a part of the whole character

1. Well, this is a pleasant surprise Andrew Garfield himself must see; in any case, I guess Sony wasn't lying when they said that Webb's films were bringing Peter Parker back to basics. 2. I think something we forget is that, though Raimi tried and failed to walk the line of preserving Stan Lee's vision and having his own vision incorporated, everything since the Raimi trilogy has fallen into its shadow because Raimi had a vision that rivaled and drowned out Stan Lee's lest the true villain is in fact the tests of time.

Wow!! You nailed why I loved and enjoyed Andrew's Spiderman so much but could get it off my chest with words, I've read Spiderman comics to an extent and I would always relate to Andrew's version its because andrew and mark web and creators of the movie wanted to showcase a comic version of Spiderman with he building his own web shooters, the tragedy gwen dying at the end just like in comics, its soo unfair people just straight aways trash about andrew because of some stupid nostalgia of raimi films.
