Excellent job of demonstrating features of those mowers. I have a 2008 Super Recycler with the Briggs engine. It still cranks on 1st or 2nd pull, does not smoke or use oil to speak of. IMO Toro makes the best mower for the homeowner hands down. I have to believe their commercial mowers are also extremely high quality. New subscriber.

I've been debating gas vs electric and Honda vs Toro... I'm comfortable with small engine maintenance and my grass gets unruly so I decided on the Toro SR with a 190cc B&S, aluminum deck, updated curved handle and electric start. Coming from an older Honda HRR model, I never knew how good self-propel could be. The cut is excellent and I love the personal pace!

That's awesome. Thank you for sharing. Both the TORO and Honda mowers are industry leaders for push mowers. We totally understand how hard that decision might be. Good choice, though. The self=propel is definitely a deal sealer.

Great review!!!!! I have zero issue with no side discharge. I mulch 100% of the time. Additionally, the deck where the side discharge is cut out weakens the deck. Many instances where the deck cracks in that area causing the deck to flex and making the blade srtike the deck, very unsafe. It can be welded, but it's expensive. Shde discharge??? A solution to a problem that doesn't exist. Too busy to mow every week, have a brush hog standing by, not a "push" mower.

I'm not a fan of chute blockers on push mowers. Better off with a mulch plug. Yes it's more money, takes a few seconds more to install and you can lose them, but the cut quality is way better with the plug. I find with the chute block door grass sits on the little ledge in front of it. Each time i turn around it drops a clump of grass on the ground. Don't have that problem with the mulch plug as it is moulded to the curve of the deck.

I think a properly designed mulch plug will almost always provide a better airflow under the deck as it is built to mimic the existing contour of the underside of the deck. Most systems that use a built in handle are nothing more than a flat flap that opens and closes and gives up the benefit of the smooth airflow under the deck. Yes, the plug is a bit of an inconvenience but notice it's on a mower that is designed for people who want a nicer cut to their lawn ( better mulching , less clumps, etc).
@robbiegolding1831

@@mellowjammer I have both a Honda with built in and the Super Recycler with plug. The Hondas actually slides from the side and is curved to the shape of the deck just built in. I find the cut quality and suction in the Honda superior. The Toro built-in plug is in fact a lazily designed flat flap as u describe.

I was ready to buy the new black super recycler 21565 but noticed the front left wheel wasn't leveled properly. It would spin freely when all set at the same level and also some reviews mention the back wheels splitting after a few uses. That kinda threw me off and went Honda instead. Too bad as i had my mind set on the Toro as i do think the cut quality is one of the best. That said, love the Honda!
@mellowjammer
@mellowjammer 2 жыл бұрын
@@robbiegolding1831 Yes, Honda did the flap the right way as far as maintaining the deck shape for airflow. The only gripe I have about the Honda design is that even when the flap is closed (for mulching), grass still gets past it and packs up in the area behind it (on my HRX17, anyway).

I’ve been a Honda owner for 20 years and just went to a Toro Super Recycler. I did get the all black Super Recycler with the Honda 160 engine. My opinion the Super Recycler does a better job cutting than the HRX 217 plus the S.R. Is a much lighter machine and less cumbersome to maneuver.

Nice video... we are looking at [this] same brand lawn mower (big wheels in back, etc).. it's the FWD 160cc... but not sure about fwd or rwd... the terrain is uneven (bumpy) in some parts... other is about 20-degree incline/decline... any suggestion on fwd or rwd? We are *not* using a grass catcher... need more "maneuverability" over speed etc. We have/had a lawn boy ... has (before it went out) a rwd... but grass always got wrapped around that rear axel (no guard from keeping grass from getting on that axel -- and it would bog down the self-propelled mechanism); also, we were *not* using a bag on that lawn boy as well.

Comments about my Recycler mower: I hate the curved auto-drive system. It introduces friction and makes for a bit of an unnatural wrist twisting motion if you are trying to get the mower to move quicker. The old linear action personal pace was a better design. While the new wide square-edge wheels look really cool, the very square edges make gradual turns in the grass (where you are not lifting the front of the mower off the ground) more difficult than a rounded edge wheel because the squared edge is more "grabby" when it rubs sideways against the long blades of grass in front where it hasn't been cut yet. The back wheels are fine with this profile as they don't affect turning much and actually put more wheel surface on the ground to dissipate the weight of the mower over a larger area. This can help reduce some rutting in soggier conditions. The new "Vortex" system may help with lower cutting as you said but on my cool season tall fescue/bluegrass lawn that gets cut between 3"- 4", it doesn't seem to make any difference. Other than that it is a good mower though!

Nice review on the difference between the 2 mowers, Chip. I just bought a new model 21565 Super Recycler last Friday. It replaced my 12 YO Super Recycler with the Kohler engine. I haven't used it yet but plan on mowing on Wednesday for the first time. Quick question for you, Chip. How do you get the stupid mulching plug out? My old mower had a steel locking lever that you turned to release the plug. My new one has two plastic tabs and some type of clip. I've tried push in on the clip to see if that will release the plug. I've tried pulling on the 2 tabs. I've tried reaching in & pulling on the entire plug. Nothing seems to work and I don't want to pull any harder for fear of breaking the plug. The instructions (What a joke...) just say to remove the plug in order to bag. What am I doing wrong?

There is a release button to press down on the top left side of the plug, it does take a bit of pressure, especially if there is some grass clippings lodged around it

Great review and comparison , I love looking at new mowers for when the day comes . I still run my 2007 SR , Brigss 190cc , been flawless all these years , wish it would quit to give me an excuse to get a new one !!!! LOL The one thing that I have been eyeing on the Honda HRX217 is the ability to do both , mulch and bag at the same time , I wish Toro would have done something like this . If I use my bag , I'm emptying it every 5-6 passes on my lawn , so I full bore mulch now , but wish it was a 50/50 like the Honda . But most likely to get another Toro SR as I am so used to the personal pace .

Have a 2012 toro 3 in 1 and that year there were 2 options: Honda engine or $100 less Briggs with cast from China. I got the cheaper one and it has run great BUT the deck is not level from the wheel settings. I had to add different amounts duct tape to each wheel to get it level. Then it cut great but should not have to do that. Otherwise, I’m very pleased with overall cut. Only wish it cut .75” if desired. The Honda did but $100 more for .5” wasn’t worth it back then.

Great video. I have a 2013 Toro 22" with the Kohler 6.5. The problem is oil running is out of the casting after the engine gets warmed up on the lower-right-front of the engine block, ~1/2" behind and above the head gasket which has been replaced, and it is dust-dry above that. I don't want to deal with it anymore and will be traveling a lot. I want those at home to have something easy to start and use as this one has been. My issues with the new Toro mowers are: 1. No spin stop on the electric start models. Nobody wants to shut off the mower every time they pick up a stick or empty a bag, electric start or not. What happens in other than online videos is people sew a Velcro loop around the handle to keep the engine running while they pick up sticks and empty bags. 2. The Vortex seems like it would benefit mulching and reduce the effectiveness of bagging. 3. The Super Recycler with its kick-down baffles would seem to benefit mulching at the expense of bagging effectiveness. Bagging and bringing to the city yard waste is our game now after a couple years of seeing what mulching does to our grass. 4. No alternator to keep electric start batteries charged. There is a spinning flywheel with a magnet on it for ignition already. To add a low-output alternator with a controlled bleed circuit to control voltage would be trivial, inexpensive, and trouble-free. 5. Dropping the clean-out port. The alternative is flipping the mower and scraping and gouging up the bottom of the deck. Currently, we conveniently set it to mulch, hook up the the hose to a clean-out port, and let it run with the blade engaged for ~4 minutes after mowing, which removes all of the built up grass in all areas. *Attempting to find a slightly older Toro in good shape on Craigslist is nearly impossible.

Here's my tip. Do not EVER buy a mower without a discharge option. It just plain doesn't work in less than perfect conditions. I had a 12 year old Toro that was rusted out, beat up and still cut through tall gas like butter. We moved to a bigger property (2 acres), and I wanted a bigger deck. I mainly use it to trim around the house and then use my riding mower for the rest of the property. I bought this mower last Fall and just used it for the first time last weekend for my first Spring cut. The grass was a little taller than usual, and this thing bogged down constantly and kept dying trying to chew threw and mulch the grass. I'm INCREDIBLY disappointed with my purchase, but it's too late for a return to the big orange store I bought it from. Toro really made a stupid mistake removing the side discharge option. Did they really think no one would ever need to cut tall grass? It's mind-numbingly stupid, and now I'm stuck with a $500 machine that won't do what my 12-year old beater could do. And to make matters even more frustrating, Toro apparently doesn't even offer a rear discharge chute as an after-market accessory like other brands. So I'm just stuck. This will be the last Toro I buy. So dumb.
@McScott76
@McScott76 2 жыл бұрын
UPDATE: I found a post from Toro on another video where they explained that a free rear discharge chute is offered to customers who register their mower. I just did that and ordered the chute. It says it will take 3-4 weeks to arrive. So I'm basically stuck with a stalling mower for most of the Spring mowing season. Their explanation for not including the chute in the box is that they're promoting mulching for the benefit of your lawn. Uh... yeah. Sure. Also, they make more profit by not shipping with the chute, and they figure most people won't bother registering. Profit over customers. Got it. I'll think twice before buying another Toro.

We don’t recommend the “no oil change”thing. We’ve seen for years little engines like these go totally neglected for a decade or so without an oil change and not have a problem. Briggs and Stratton is just the first manufacturer to promote it. It will consume a very small amount of oil, just like all the others, so as long as you are topping it off everything will be okay for awhile. We recommend changing your oil every year, even with this engine

Toro still makes a Great mower but I prefer the older Toros made back in the 80's with the aluminum decks (steel decks rust too easy). Both my 35 year old aluminum deck Toros with the Suzuki motors still run Great and never let me down. Only parts that were changed was the worn out wheels. Maintenance is just change oil in the 4 stroke one, ( other is a 2 stroke) and clean the grass clippings from underneath.

It's unfortunate that the presenter constantly refers to the mowers as push mowers. They are not. These mowers are self-propelled, stand behind mowers. The push mower has no propulsion system other than the person walking behind the bar who must push it. Pushing the mower is the propulsion system. Where as the self-propelled mower has rear wheel or front wheel drive Wheels which propel the mower forward. Personal pace refers to how quickly the drive wheels turn thereby speeding up or slowing down the mower. Other than referring to the mowers incorrectly as push mowers, the reviewer actually did a fairly good job explaining the benefits and the features of the new mowers. I have owned Toro mowers for over 12 years and like the way that they cut the grass in terms of evenness, but the mower itself is filled with plastic parts that break. I like the ergonomics on the toro mowers as well. But Honda clearly has them beat with build quality and parts quality; many less plastic parts to break on a Honda mower.

We agree with the semantics, but you can hardly find a push mower without a self propel system anymore, this is really just the vernacular. @@mainstreetmower what do you mean when you say, "... You can hardly find a push mower without a self propelled system anymore, this is really just the vernacular.". I think you're out in left field somewhere. You can buy a push mower anywhere without any self-propelled system whatsoever. Walmart, home Depot, Lowe's, and online just about at any store that sells lawn equipment. They're everywhere, common push mowers. There should be a third screw, holding the top cover on, it may be under a sticker. However, every hour meter on the market that I’m aware of picks up the electronic pulse of the engine and only has to be close by so it will work the same if you just attach it to the plastic.

Curt is 100% correct...the John Deere 14SB/JX75 were the best mowers ever built and 20yrs later out perform and will likely outlast that Toro SR. What makes them so superior? 1. Engine: Kawasaki 150cc pressurized oil (oil filter capable) OHV (5-6hp depending on yr). Powerful, reliable, fuel efficient, manual choke/throttle, light weight 2. 5 speed tuff-torque transmission - way beefier than homeowner Toro's. Simple bail system to operate - Personal Pace too much plastic, one only has to look at the top Exmark/Toro commercial units-they don't rely on PP, if it was better/more durable they would - they use the simple, rugged bail handle 3. Commercial quality Blade Brake Clutch, mower stays running while blade stops 4. Thick cast aluminum deck with excellent vacuum 5. Grease nipples on rear drive wheels 6. Standardized wheels that are interchangeable with drive gear allows you to rotate front to back and replace more easily (note: IMHO plastic wheels are the weak spot of this mower-even still they have bearings) 7. Dual bolted on heavy duty blade. This blade is easily 1.5x the heft of lesser 'homeowner' units. Lots of material to sharpen yr after yr, plus eats up branches and not easily damaged while giving THE BEST cut I have experienced 8. Large capacity bag that has a sturdy frame, allows great airflow, stays attached when using easily unhooked when emptying 9. Mulch plug or side discharge chute available as options to bagging 10. I have 4 units ranging between 20 & 30yrs old still going strong and outperforming $1000 homeowner and $3000 commercial Toro/Exmark units - which are the only other mower I would consider after the JD's...Honda a distant 3rd (not a fan of Honda small engines) There's a very strong following and community for these old Deere's...just don't fall for the later Big Box steel deck units...ONLY buy the aluminum deck models with the 14SB and early JX75/JX85 being the very best units IMO...cheers!

I have 3 1996 14SB's that are still going strong. I really like the sturdiness. Everything about these mowers are well designed and built to last. Excellent engines. Quick governor. Very smooth. Adjustable throttle and manual choke. They handle well too. Nice and compact. Nice adjustable handle bars. Heavy aluminum deck. Self propel is smooth and disengages instantly for backing up quickly. Bagging is the best I've seen. Mulching is good but not anything special with the stock blade. I almost feel sorry for anyone who hasn't operated one of these. I honestly don't know what to replace one with. Maybe a Toro 22298? Although I haven't seen the drive system in those yet.

The super recycler is 21” because that deck size has near perfect suction/cut. If you pass into 24 or 26 you need a much larger engine or double blades, and in either case a much heavier duty frame. All of these changes will double the cost, most people want more than 3” for double the price. Toro has competition and if it made sense it would exist. If 21” is too small, you have a killer option…. 30” TimeMaster, thank you Toro for giving this option to the world!

Chip. I have one of the vintage Snapper Hi-Vac push mowers that I always thought had a very awesome cut quality until my sister decided to purchase a Toro 20339 ReCycler which totally made a believer out of me regarding the Toro mowers. Really I guess what I am leading into would be maybe a video suggestion of a comparison between the Toro ReCycler and a Snapper Hi-Vac with maybe even a Toro Super ReCycler thrown into the comparison comparing the Snapper Hi-Vac mower deck design vs the Toro mower deck design with even maybe a actual mowing demonstration. Isn’t the current Snapper Commercial 21 inch basically the same exact mower deck as the vintage Snapper Hi-Vac mowers of the 1970s? I will say that I have experimented with different mower blades on my Snapper and found that the standard blade performed probably the best as you would probably not be surprised to hear. One blade that I decided to try was the Gator/Predator blade on my Snapper Hi-Vac which would maybe be comparable to the Atomic blade for the Toro ReCycler. My only complaint against the Gator/Predator style mower blades would be that the serrated area of the blade gets pretty clogged with grass clippings in wet conditions as would be experienced more in early spring which sort of defeats the purpose of the design where the standard blade would be the way to go. With that said, I think that the Atomic blades fared better with the wet conditions than the Gator/Predator mower blades seemed to do. My vintage Snapper Hi-Vac allows me to achieve more RPMs as needed with the throttle cable whereas the newer design mowers have the fixed engine speed. Thanks as Always For Your Great Videos.

@@mainstreetmower Chip. I wish that I wasn’t so far away from you or I would loan you my old Snapper Hi-Vac that actually has the Gator/Predator blade that I was mentioning. One unique fact about the Snapper blades was the fact that they were made like a channel that the blade adapter fit into which pretty much assured that the blade would not spin on the blade adapter, But you would know pretty quickly if your did not have the blade channel placed correctly onto the blade adapter. One additional experiment that I tried with the Snapper blade was to purchase a blade with the pre-drilled holes in the top portion of the blade and to install the “Wings” that Snapper offered for even additional lift of the grass to be cut. This option was mostly utilized also for bagging in which the clippings were blown in the bag with more forceful action than the standard blade. The flatbread Briggs&Stratton engine was slightly underpowered in taller grass for this blade configuration to be totally effective. The newer Snapper Commercial Hi-Vac should have the exact same 21 inch mower deck with a larger engine than my 3.5 hp flathead Briggs&Stratton engine. The original engines for the vintage Snapper Hi-Vac mowers were painted white with white wheels against the red mower deck - Much like Toro in that regard. Honda push mowers with their unique blades seems to me as a knock off of the Snapper Ninja blades that have been around for a while. Okay Chip, I will leave you alone now.
