All I can say is that I still have my 06 Toro recycler personal pace mower, Tecunseh engine, rear wheel drive, and to this day starts on the 1st pull every time. Original deck very minor rust, original carburetor, wheels and cablesI. I did have to replace the RWD transmission last year. Every year the oil is changed, new filter and plug. Blade is sharpened /balanced about 5 or 6 times each growing season . Fuel is always treated with an ethanol fuel treatment. The underside is water port washed after each use and is run 5 minutes or more to dry the underside and stored out of the weather in a shed. You take care of your mower and it will give you years of loyal service.

My newest is a 1999, front wheel drive, big rear wheels ( 12"). The two older ones have aluminum decks (no rusting 😊). All three have been trouble free, except for wearing out drive wheels. I change oil, and air filter yearly. So, Toro seems to be a quality mower! Why three??? One mower for my back drainage area (rocks). One for my nice lawn and one at my mom's house.

While I like the aggressive look of the newer wheels with their wider, squared-off edges, I find that the rounded edges of the older wheels makes initiating a gradual turn in the lawn much easier. Like going around a big tree ring or a curved landscape bed edge. The kind of turns where you are not lifting the front end off the ground. The rubbery squared-off edge of the new wheels is a bit "grabby" when trying to turn and move the wheel sideways against the grass. I think that's why most mower wheels are still made in a rounded off profile. Years ago, Lawn Boy even featured a wide but very rounded-edge wheel with a special tread pattern and called them "Easy-Turn" wheels! I have replaced all of the front wheels on my newer Recyclers and Super Recyclers with ball bearing rounded-edge wheels from older Super Recyclers. If you don't have to make these kinds of turns in your landscape it probably doesn't matter to you, but I have lots of these. To me, function is more important than looks!

Update: ((optional add on) Toro part number 144-6377 traction assist handle kit) does fit all new Toro mowers that have the new baby carriage curved shape. IMO you could make your own Toro's BTAH (Black Traction Assist Handle) from 2 pieces of wood in ((L) shape) and some bolts and washers. Toro's BTAH converts Toro's PPM (Personal Pace Mowers) (which requires a person to push Toro's heavy mower forward before the self-propelled drive kicks in) to ((easily without effort) controlling Toro's self-propelled drive with just your fingers and hands without moving forward). This is needed on steep hills where you need the Toro mower to pull you and this powerful mower up the hill without any effort on your part. The powerful Toro mower can do this only with BTAH and not by Toro's PPM (extra exercise mode). Without BTAH you end up pushing this heavy Toro mower up the hill. Thank you for your help and understanding on this Toro (back breaking) mower issue.

The wheel drive design has changed from the older style with the clutched gears. If the General Transmission design is like the one shown in this (attached) video, you can see how it would require the mower to move forward a bit in order for the 2 black cogged gear wheels to disengage, allowing free backward movement. This sucks for using the mower in tight areas where some quick forward & back mower motions are required to get a small area of grass cut. It also would require letting off the PP handle and letting the mower roll a bit before attempting to turn. In my thick lawn the mower doesn't roll much when I let off the handle so when I pivot the mower 180 degrees and try to start the next pass I often have to deal with the &*#%ing lockup issue again. I have tried adding a spring to the transmission to remove any belt tension when letting go of the handle but it does not cure the issue. Looking at the video I am convinced that it has to be a technique thing which is going to be hard for me to get used to after using the older style PP transmission that worked almost 100% flawlessly for me for the past 12 years! kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5TKiZqLdsx8qac

I actually just picked up one of those older toros with the Kohler engine free in my town in real good shape. Needs a new auto choke thing already ordered and I think the carburetor needs cleaned. I have a like/hate relationship with the Kohler engines these have. Easy and quiet but they have a fair share of issues as well. Eventually I might swap a older honda engine onto it if the Kohler doesn't last.

@@iowafox2206 nice iowafox! Like the idea of the older Honda engine! I would go for it and make it unstoppable!

@@GarageGear I got my first Toro Recycler today, I've been rocking the Craftsman M230 for 4 years which my purchased of FB marketplace for $150 and the thing was brand new, the guy I purchased it from delivered it in it's original box on open. Unfortunately the Craftsman M230 can't be stored vertically. I love the 163cc for my yard but I need the storage space. Watching your video convinced me to make this move. First mow of the recycler will be tomorrow morning here in Dallas, TX and my grass is ready for it. Would love to have the supper recycler but that thing looks way too bulky and a little flimsy, I did not like the feel. Let's see how this new Toro of mine hold up tomorrow morning.

Vortex, ASS discharge, and washout ports are three biggest gimmicks going. TORO has shit the bed with the DIY community IMO. Even their TRX snow blower that was supposed to be the competitor to the Ariens RapidTrack was a bigger joke than Biden vs Trump on Thursday. TORO will never get one cent of my money ever again.

@@GarageGear Being statuesque isn't the answer. You make the videos, look at back at them and tell me you don't overly talk with your hands and I'll believe you. You post the videos, you should be open to feedback. You have great content that is really informative but you talk so much with your hands you make the videos unwatchable.
