Maybe not a pure photo editing app, but I think Prequel (I'd love to hear your opinion on that app) does a good job simulating film, vhs effects, rgb shifts, good looking noise/grain/dust. Been missing something like this for the desktop - of course it's achievable in photoshop but not in a one-click manner like in prequel, unless you buy a ton of expensive actions.

Agree that the Apple Exposure is weird, along with several other controls. However, I normally start with the the Magic Wand Slider, find it gives good results, which I may touch up using highlights, shadows, and a bit of contrast or brightness. The more I use the Magic Wand slider, the more impressed I get with it, if I stay in the +- 50% range. I don’t know how to describe its behavior, but you can see the other sliders moving when adjusting the Magic Wand Slider. I have been a big Lightroom fan for many years, but have decided to see if I could get good results with Apple Photos. My first observation, was as yours, their controls don’t at all work like Lightroom. (Think Different) But the Magic Wand Slider was a positive surprise. Would appreciate if you perhaps could do a review of it, and explore if it is useful for you or not. It is important to forget the normal expectations to give it a chance.

In Snapseed defence, I would say the main filters and grain effects are under grainy film and not under the looks tab. And another thing I like about Snapseed is, it allows you to create your own filters and save it to the looks tab so you can easily access it

Note on the Apple Photos app (especially now, with iOS 16) that might make it more useful! I’ve created a few filters using the default Apple filters, setting them to 30-50%, hitting auto, and then adjusting slightly according to taste (e.g., lowering “blacks” while raising “definition,” adjusting temperature when needed to compensate for some of the weird filters, etc.). I save the edits to a certain photo and put that photo in an album called “Films,” which I can then use to copy and paste edits to my recent photos and videos now that iOS 16 allows for that. The reason I like Apple Photos over the others is because it allows me to edit my videos and photos all with the same looks, and even the loop/bounce gifs from Live Photos.

as a darkroom & lightroom user, completely agree with your take. Darkroom has great tools that work well, but its greatest weakness is the poor built-in filters. I would also say that their "Shadows" and "Blacks" sliders don't work very well either in my experience, Lightroom is better for bringing up the shadows.

Do you use Lightroom Classic or the new cloud-based version on your desktop? I've been using Classic for years, but I miss having all my images with me on the go. I've tried Apple Photos several times, but each time it just disappoints. Highlight and shadow recovery is awful and almost useless. I'm thinking about changing my Adobe-subscription to the Lightroom cloud version, but it just seems like a much worse deal than the Classic subscription. Yes, you get 1TB of cloud storage, but you loose Photoshop (on both desktop and iPad) and several other smaller apps. I do have Affinity Photo, so I could probably live without Photoshop though.

Yikes, I love your videos, but you kind of screwed up out of the gate. On Apple photos, exposure and brightness are two different things thus you’re not giving and apples to apples comparison when you can move brightness on one app, but exposure on another. Also, not every preset on Lightroom desktop works on Lightroom mobile. Well, it seems like this review represents to me is it you have your favorite tools and now your criteria is I like this tool so it seems like a circular loop to me. I don’t see you really diving in like I would love to see somebody do, but that may make for a boring video I admit.
@stalman2 жыл бұрын
Definitely not as deep of a dive as the apps deserve, but regarding the Apple brightness/exposure, neither creates a desirable result. Plus, neither of the words provide any clarity in terms of how they will behave. In camera, "exposure" means you'll get a very specific tone response and if software titles a slider "exposure" it should attempt to emulate that variable.

The title of the video, best editing apps for iPhone, somehow led you to believe it macOS focused? FWIW, as he alluded to with Lightroom, in many ways the iOS version is much more advanced than the desktop. They've used the ML stuff that's been built into the A series chips and iOS for a while now to do things you can't do on desktop without time consuming manual effort. I'm sure that will be changing with the M series in Macs now, but it's amazing to knock out an incredibly accurate, complex selection with a single click on the phone, when the same selection, even in full Photoshop, on the desktop takes a lot of manual refinement work to match.
