I never was a Honda fan. But I purchased a 07 TL Type-S manual and it made me believe you don't need a RWD or AWD car to have a great handling sports feel. I can see why the Civic Type R may be the most engaging drivers car out of all of them. Especially being the lightest of them all with special Honda racing tech.

TheRossdlf isn't that what people are suppose to do? Compare cars to see which one they prefer? If you're in the market for one of these cars, you'd be crazy not to test drive them, granted they let you. The only reason one wouldn't do so is if they have their mind set on one specific car :)

Thanks for the honest comparison. The type r seems like a blast to drive, especially on the track. Too many people are so quick to call it a rice car. These are all boy racer cars, who cares. They are fun!

John's S2K I agree! People are quick to judge this car because it's a HONDA. If the RS looked ridiculous people would be saying it's because it's suppose to be aggressive and bold! The type R's styling is a little dramatic but I'd buy the car in a heartbeat. You can't go wrong with either of the other cars though

thank you for having the Integrity to jump immediately to your conclusion for the viewers that only wanted it, and then at all the supporting information afterwards. In this day and age of everyone fighting for our attention via ads or games or movies it's so frustrating in these KZbin videos when it's obvious that someone's trying to drag you along for both the time viewed stat in KZbin as well as the adview money. WRX STI handles about as good as Evo X already, now Civic Type R does too, and they all don't have bare-bones interiors from 10 years ago like the Evo does. It's a shame, but it's just not competitive anymore unless you don't care about a decent interior at all.

I think he got it wrong on STI reliability. The advancement of engine tuning makes an engine reliable. A lot of people that fix up STI's that blow on them, are exceeding the potential of an engine's internal. My shit is reliable, tuned, on E85. Only problems I've had is clutch slippage (too much tq), and leaking radiator. That's regular upkeep for an '08 STI model

I had a 2011 STI and loved that car to death, it was my dream car. Sadly it came to a tragic end and I miss it everyday. That being said it was quite reliable and had few of mods on it. From after market N1 exhaust and catted DP, a 44mm Tial WG that vented to air, and a few other things here and there it lasted well into 90k+ miles. That being said... the EJ engine has gotten way to long in the tooth and I wish Subaru would finally bring the JDM engine to the states. If they did I would happily compare it to the Type R for which we ordered. Now, for the record, I am fan of Subaru, Honda, and Mitsubishi (in that order). The EvoX is now gone, and with Subaru lacking behind in many areas and their new STI looking more like a sedated sedan, with a small boot, an ok rear seat leg room (we do alot of trips with friends), and horrible gas mileage (seriously if your getting 24 mpg in 2017), the Type R just hit every check box. I am glad Honda is back in the game and I cant wait to see what comes out of Subaru in the future to combat it.

Matt, I couldn't have said it better myself. I owned an RS for 9 months and had to sell it because the ride quality was sooooo horrible. The RS beats the crap out of you every time you drive it, and what's the point of owning a car when you get no enjoyment from it? I test drove the Type R and was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable the ride quality was in comfort mode, but the car still felt sporty and really fun to drive. The Type R even in +R mode did not beat the crap out of you like the Focus RS did in normal mode. Plus the engines in the RS are blowing themselves up on a weekly basis. Plan on purchasing a 2019 Sonic Grey Type R in the new year when they go on sale in Canada.

I drive an 07 Si all year and I think its acceptable in the snow with snow tires but not great. Maybe because my previous car was an awd Subaru. I also had an old Toyota Tercel that was great in the snow compared to the Si. Fyi, the way the LSD functions in the Si basically makes it useless during slippery conditions. The differential just acts like an open differential in the snow.

Why does everyone think the K20C1 motor is new, it's been around for 4 years now
@cybercityoedo808
@cybercityoedo808 4 жыл бұрын
It simply feels and performs newer for the following: direct injection, no lag, pulls hard in every gear from low rpm to redline... Makes the Civic capable of spinning the tires even in 3rd gear, they actually possibly underrated the power levels from the factory. I recently bought a 19 Type R and loving it, it is superior to my STI in everyway except for off the line and rain/snow traction.

phijef89 I agree. Not sure where he gets his info from, but I know alot of people around here who have modified their STi with no issues. Now the engine design is OLD and Subaru deserves a lashing for not having a successor by now. Interesting how people criticize the STi's engine, but all these cars with "newer" engines have pretty much the same performance as the STi with its 14 year old engine design.

Type-Rfan, it's Ok. Don't worry about what people would say, like when you said that you wouldn't like an STI as a daily driver. However, coming from a WRXfan from prior generations your transformation is magnificent. Soon you are going to be enjoying the Prius V, because it's big and quiet. It's called aging well and fast.

I get why you put the STI in the mix, for the price point really... but I think a more fair comparison in the Subaru lineup would be the '15+ WRX. I know it may not come with as much HP/TQ off the shelf as the other guys, but the engine really is so good. It's more up to date and reliable than the old EJ's and it's plenty capable of keeping up with the rest of these guys.

I know it's not quite the same class but for a car with reasonable storage and similar price range why not consider a BMW 228i? It offers a similar 0-60 time and is RWD. Plus it's more luxurious and doesn't have all the crazy styling enhancements. I feel like a lot of these non-luxury cars have shot up in price that it doesn't make much sense to buy them anymore. I would love a Golf R given it's more subdued appearance but I just don't feel like spending $40k+ on a Golf.

My past few cars were a 07 fg2 si, a stage 2 widebody wrx hatch, and now a Golf R. I've yet to see a type r but as for the others mentioned in the video in my opinion no interior comes close to the refinement and overall feel of the Golf R. It was one of the main reasons I went for it at this time last year, especially with the Apple Carplay and really nice bolstered leather POWER seats. Having owned a couple of hondas, the overall quality just like with Subaru does not match a German car, its not even close in my opinion. Eventually the seats will wear, the plastics will scuff easy, and the cheap honda paint will chip like they all do because at the end of the day its just a honda. Obviously where it ranks supreme and as the video said what some people will only care about is the motor and handling, but for near 40k I need more than that. Plus every car in this comparison handles great. Having owned jap cars for over 10 years and having been in numerous loaded infinitys owned by my mom when I was a kid that cheaper quality and overall feel has been my experience with them all, and dont get me started with the rattles. The Golf R is on another level in this regard and as soon as you sit in one you will recognize that. I'm sure the type r feels similar, but I'll take the leather over bright red cloth personally. I laugh at people who try to mention the focus rs though, when I had a rental focus the dash and trim was nearly the exact same as in the Rs. People are paying over 40k for that? No thank you, and I know the golf r is like a gti but again its German quality so I really do feel as if I got my moneys worth instead of feeling like I'm driving a rental car. Anyways, having said that, while extremely quick the Golf R is a snoozefest to drive, I miss the drama of my turboback tomei exhaust on my wrx. But, unless I can get a Type R for msrp I think I may get another Golf R this time with dsg, flash it, and blow the doors off almost everything on the road. I would never buy a focus and I've pretty much given up on Subaru with their wrxs that look like Camry inspired boats, I want an updated widebody hatch with a new mod friendly motor.

Just out of curiosity, when did you last drive the RS? Might be a more fair comparison if you drove them back to back. Although the interior stuff hasn't changed. I'd really like to drive a type R. Good points, although I have to say, the Type R (IMHO) is the worst looking of the bunch. My pick would be a 3 door GTI 6 speed with the sports package. You can't beat VW/Audi products for cheap horsepower and those DSG boxes really open up to 80% of the buying market who want a stupid fast compact without a clutch. The STI isn't much of a looker, but the harsh ride is really unnecessary and the my brother has already experienced the 'ringland' failure (makes my E39 timing chain guides look less of a problem). The RS is amazing, and isn't too bad of a ride, also you don't have to have the hardcore Recaro seat option. The RS ticks most of the boxes for me, but the interior is something you have to get used to. My picks would be 1. Focus RS 2. Golf R (6MT), 3. STI and 4. Type R. All wonderful cars, but the Golf R is a monster when tuned within APR. reliability would be an issue with all of these cars at some point, honestly !

Bottom line: If you want something with more class and sophistication then go with the Golf R. If you prefer high-strung (and gaudy-imho) get the Civic Type R. Want to stay domestic then Focus RS. The STI, well it's so outdated that I don't know why you'd want a current version. That one has me stumped. This is quite a perplexing conundrum, especially if you favor one manufacturer over another. Personally, I say 'None of the Above'. No self-respecting successful person will take you seriously if you drive any of these though. The Golf R is your best bet if you must choose. Side note - I have not driven any of these _current_ models so my opinion is merely subjective. Lastly, the majority of Golf R owners I see and meet out here are in their 40's. That says something right there.. Keep up the good work my friends.

Either way the Type R is the fastest on track or a canyon road. It's only slower than the others from a dig but from about a 30 roll it only loses to the Focus RS. The Type R Nürburgring time is 7:43 and the Focus RS did 8:06

I've always been a Honda fan but the looks have changed very very much over the years. I own a GTI and plan on the getting the new Golf R. the golf r just feels more mature and the civic looks to high school days for me. Honda added to much rice to this civic type r . but we all have our own taste and get whatever floats your boat

This was a pretty good comparison. If I was buying one, I would not know what to get honestly. But the Golf R would be my last choice, it does seem like the boring one out of the bunch. Unless my main focus was straight line speed. VW tuning is crazy good. Some fast Golf R's out here. I think I'd choose between the Type R & STi. 3rd place) Focus RS, 4th) Golf R. The styling on both are exciting to me. Those Type R seats are looking perfect tho, looks tempting. The Subaru engines blowing up so often might make me not go that route. But the soundd is just heaven, I'd love to drive around with a Subaru rumble daily. I'd need to hear the Type R with some exhausts before I made that purchase. :) One again great Type R review, and nice comparison vid.

why are we all of a sudden comparing a FWD car to other AWD cars? Does that help you downplay the R?

Type R is one of the few "Fail Wheel Drive" vehicles I would actually consider owning...Except...It's a little too garishly designed for my taste. Maybe if I was 10 years younger. The WRX/STI have just the right amount of immaturity for me, but I think I'll wait for that new engine and platform in a few years.

What torpedo's the Focus RS for me is Fords Recaro seats. They CRUSH my ribcage so I can't breathe. This is nothing to do with being fat as I have a low body fat percentage, I'm just stocky and there is no fat at the ribcage/midriff bolster area. (My hips and thighs are fine) With a jacket on I can't breathe properly in Ford Recaro seats. I bought an ST3 and had to take it back after 2 days, it was that bad. I drove a Megane RS CUP with Recaro seats which were fine weirdly and that's supposed to be more hardcore. I'd be interested to try the seats in the Type-R, as I love Hondas, if not I'd have a Megane RS with low milage for half the money of these. Honestly whoever designed the Focus Recaro seats needs to be done in the wrong'un by an enraged mountain gorilla, please make your bolsters adjustable.

For me: 1. Type R - fwd is so good you don't need awd and interior is arguably the best. 2. STI - for no reason honestly... the body is the worst style we've seen yet and the engine is old and the tech is old but the car is just badass. 3. Golf R - a lot of car packed into the smallest package with premium feel. 4. Focus RS - the interior is HORRIBLE, I hate the bulky plastic and cheap materials, looks just like a 2012 base fiesta interior... but the rest of the car is awesome.

The interior upgrades will probably give it the best interior of the bunch but it'll still drive the same and that's really the main thing that isn't as exciting as the competitors.

type R needs an AWD option, and the styling is way over the top. RS is very cool, but the interior sucks and is overpriced. WRX STI is perfect. VW Golf R is pretty quick but looks girly.
