Loved the video my man - I’m still a huge fan of CCD sensors for this reason. Higher resolution and a larger sensor doesn’t mean your images are better looking; it just means you have a larger sensor and higher resolution lol. The colors that come out of your M8 are always amazing.

Time to dust off my M8 and stop thinking the grass is always greener with the "latest" and the "greatest". And Dee as you said larger sensor, more megapixels does not make the image better. on the other hand, high megapixels does equal more detail, and, MORE NOISE....
@lensman57622 жыл бұрын
@@maze400 I have been screaming what you just said for years. In 90% of the shots, theolder CCD sensor produced more exotic colours and more pleasing to the eye. The manufacturers, particularly those who manufacture sensors like Sony, Canon, Fuji in the main, need us to constantly upgrade, to keep their lines going. Hand on my heart, with the exception of IBIS and some improvements in autofocus accuarcy due to better processors within the camera for sports or wildlife photography, digital photography technology has not realy moved that much during the last 12 years or so. Yes, they are now able to cram more pixels on sensors and make them larger, but the improvements if any have been incremental. Yet, they do need our cash, hence the apparent built in obsolensce even with the help of software manuacturers.

M8 wins hands down against the M10, M8 have a richness, especially in the high lights that it is almost like seeing the difference between shooting 135 and 120 film also pictures come out so much more film like. The only thing that the M8 lacks in is in the reds and, depending on the light, sometimes on the skin tones. Also loved very much how the color balance takes the warmth or the coldness of the light, very much like a film would do. Great job, now I am going to go look for an M8 for sale.

Interesting video. I bought my M8 s/h back in 2010 (I p/ex'd my M7 for it, which with hindsight wasn't the best idea financially 😳). I used it for a bit but really was more into film so bought an MP and haven't used the M8 much since. I also bought a Sony a7ii for digital work, which can take M lenses with an adaptor so I've not seen the need for a newer digital M. I was looking back through some old photos and started to notice that I really liked the ones that I'd taken on the M8, then seeing your video and a couple of other KZbin M8 videos rekindled my interest in it. I got it out of the cupboard, treated it to a brand new £120 Leica battery (a rip-off but it is much better than the cheap one I had for it) and I'm loving it and kicking myself for not using it more over the past decade.

To be perfectly honest, I don't usually watch this genre of photography, but you have done very well with the photography, and what a place to do it at? Congratulations. Did you also know that the M8 was lambasted on launch by all the so called 'aficionados', due to its slighly IR leaky sensor. It is that leaky IR that is giving the M8 files, the sought after look and that it is a CCD sensor so it produces colours more like film does. It does have a much more analogue look than a CMOS sensor. My old Nikon D70, and D200 also had CCD sensors and I always prefrred their colours to my later CMOS cameras.

But obviously dependent on any processing. It would be interesting for you to also share the raw files from each? I chose the M8 about 3/4 of the times. When I didn’t it was because the M10 photo seemed better exposed. It was interesting then to hear you mention problems with the M8 as they related to exactly those M10 winners. I also wonder if auto white balance differences were at play? But, pleased to find another video where someone likes the colour and rendition of the M8. I saw the failed photos from the M8 and thought if you have tried underexposing the images and editing in post? CCD pixels can somehow bleed the whole row. I have the same problem in my M Monochrom (CCD), where either dropping ISO or underexposing fixes the issue. It's good until around ISO 1000 or so. After that, I may get these vertical pixel rows with different exposure. Most of the time, however, these won't appear, and I can shoot ISO 10000 without problems. I have set up the camera to underexpose either 1/3 or 2/3 stops all the time, which is helpful also for protecting the highlights, which I cannot recover like I can with a colour camera.

I think her skin looks way more natural shot on the M10. On the M8 her skin looks a bit too red. This could be because the M8's colors get a little funky with less exposure. This is similar to my experience of shooting with the M8 way back, sometimes skin tones were good, sometimes they were too red especially in darker shots. I do see more of a color shift going on in the shadows of the M8 which can be a good look or frustrating depending on the situation and might be part of what people like about the CCD look. Also, failure is not a small thing! For me it's pretty much a deal breaker. Not being able to trust a camera means I probably won't take it on a trip or a big job. So then what's the point? I think you could easily match the richness you like from the M8 files by boosting exposure, contrast, and/or saturation on the M10 files that you think are lacking. The difference on the pancake shot was about 1/3 stop of exposure and a bit of saturation. It's much harder to remove a color cast than it is to add one in post just like it's easier to reduce DR in post than it is to add it back when it's not really in the raw file. I had an M8 many moons ago and while there was a lot I loved about it, ultimately I found all the little quirks (IR filters, crop factor (having to use a 28/2.8 instead of a 35/2.0 or a 35/2.0 instead of a 50/1.4) lots of noise at iso 1600, small buffer so frustrating for portraits!) had me looking elsewhere for a more flexible camera with better user experience. I also went through phase of thinking that I could get a cool look by shooting with a CCD sensor Nikon D200 but after comparing the shots with my D750, I ultimately thought the colors from the D750 felt more natural (despite really wanting to love the d200).

It would be more adequate to use the LEICA M9 and M10 , instead of M8, to me. If you consider the LEICA M9 as the M8, but with full frame, ... it would be much better and closer comparisson between those two cameras. Basically: We have the two FF sensors of the such opposite breed but also with similar resolution.

cant argue with that. m9 is pound for pound a better camera than the m8

Hi Marcus, Hello, I just bought the m8 and the voigtlander after seeing this video! So inspiring. However, what filter do you use? A big thanks !

It’s the uv/ir cut filter

I believe that the more advance cameras get, like the M10, the more we tend to admire the less advanced look such as of the M8. The M10 hat more details but I prefer the artistic look of the M8
@MarcusLloyd2 жыл бұрын
You said it best right here
@marcgabor96902 жыл бұрын
The artistic look comes from your "printing" or post processing skills. Even when shooting film, your work in the darkroom or the type of printing press used largely determines the look of the image. Marcus used the same preset for two completely different file types so the comparison just shows how each file takes to his preset.
@j.k56542 жыл бұрын
@@marcgabor9690 I disagree. The artistic look comes from the medium (mp, lens, film type) and it can be enhanced in post. You said it your self… how each file takes to his preset… shouldn’t they look the same then? So you telling me that a picture from my pin hole camera will look the same as from my m10 if only I give both the same post process???? Nope
@marcgabor96902 жыл бұрын
@@j.k5654 Not at all. first of all comparing different lens effects is different than manipulating tonality. I am not suggesting that you can create the look of a particular lens in post nor am I suggesting that you can create the tonality of a large sensor from a small sensor. If I apply my (RAW) presets for Nikon to a Canon or Fuji file, they will look very different. But if I take the time, I can get the image from one to look like the other by using my eyes as I subtlety make adjustments. I've worked as a DIT, retoucher, and I spent years working in the darkroom, and I can tell you that great photographers are all either great printers or they employ great printers. You want a warm natural look, it's not about picking the right camera, it's about manipulating the color balance, then adjusting the hue/sat of individual color channels to keep the skin tones looking natural, bringing down highlights, dodging and burning, etc.. When you get it right it looks natural, like it just came out that way. The more information you have to work with the better (which is why a lot of commercial photography is shot on med format, it's not the resolution, it's the flexibility you are afforded by having more dynamic range and color depth).

Beautiful pictures from that M8, but that CCD corrosion is a bi***... On the other hand, you are lucky enoughh that camera still works at all. My Olympus C5050 died all of the sudden and there was nothing I could do to save it 😭
@woutdezeeuw16042 жыл бұрын
M8 sensor doesn't corrode, it's something in the CCD getting overloaded temporarily. Corrosion would show up as the same in every shot. The M9 sensor did corrode (technically the sensor glass).
