Great to see some love and appreciation for the underdog. I shoot mine like my film M-A, except in reverse latitude. So instead of overexposing for film, I allow myself for up to 4 stops of underexposure @ iso 160 (shooting all manual, sunny 16 like the M-A, of course!) DNG and just boost exposure in lightroom. Looks amazing, can get portra 400 like colours and has a nice grain with the boost in exposure. Give it a go! I think you'll really enjoy it.

I have two CCD sensor Leicas: an M9 P which gives about the same color rendering, and an S2. I am in love with both. The results are almost painterly, providing a surreal view of the world which not everyone likes, but has me enthralled. And definitely I prefer the green tint to the magentas of digital CMOS sensors

Wonderful review. I bought the M8 when it first hit the market and it always produced my most gratifying images. Eventually I sold it to purchase the M9 Monochrom and now it’s back in my camera bag. I am as thrilled with the images as I was when I had my original M8. The images it generates (with its Kodak CCD sensor) is what I call the sweet spot between analog and digital. They have a beautiful organic classic quality I absolutely love!

Wonderful video on what is for me a lifelong companion camera. I've been shooting my m8.2 for about 12 years now! I literally shoot it every week and it's been around the whole world about 5 times. Bonkers when I think about it. @2:50 So there was not an MP version of the m8 but I think you can consider the M8.2 the MP of the time. Logo is back instead of the red dot. It has a slightly quieter shutter than the stock M8 and of course it comes in the black paint on brace. Mine's naturally braced after all the travel even though I do look after it. Enjoy the camera and I just subscribed. Cheers from Ireland.

Video @ 13:05 "I can't see the value of my shutter speed" - Well, in case folks got the wrong impression, the speeds are in the viewfinder when it's used on the AUTO setting (big & bright digital numbers ! ) - Plus, the same 'meter' that sets the Auto also provides the manual 'match-needle' readings. Also, the partial depress of the release button also locks your Auto readings (indicated inside the viewfinder). With this locking, you can keep the Auto readings exactly where you want, or, transfer quickly to the manual speed via the large top-plate dial. - Finally, I use a wonderful COMPACT flash which is a bounce sideways, bounce ceiling or tip-down macro flash. The Nikon Speedlight SB-15, I use this virtually perfect flash with multiple cameras...

I've had my M8.2 for three years, with three ASPH Leica lens (Summicron 28, Summilux 50, Summicron APO 90 and 15mm Voightlander Super Helix) and I also have Canon L lens and a 5DS 50meg Canon. I absolutely love my Leica M8.2 more than my Canon cameras. Canon is great for nature and sports images with long zoom lens, but for me when it comes to all other modes I use my M8.2 and have fun with it, and absolutely love the colors and accurate detailed images. Black and white images are incredible. Simplicity is a strength with this camera. Portraits with the 50mm or 90mm come out with a depth and color rendition I cannot replicate with Canon, the Bokeh is amazing. I have thought about upgrading to a M10 or M240, but I continue to ask myself what is the problem, I love using the M8.2 camera and its output is amazing, so why change! So I don't! Also, its small and easy to carry three spare lens in my case just switching out lens when needed. I process my Canon's 70mega pixel files and hate that space hog, with the M8.2 it is really only 10megs and easy to manage, even using my iPhone with light room! I just printed a lot of M8.2 images on 8 x 12 prints, beautiful ,clean, perfect images! I think the question should always be "does my camera satisfy my needs and do I love its output?"t, if the answer is yes then don't look for another, its unnecessary to follow the gear acquisition piped piper.

Leica sensor tech in general! The M8 is phenomenal, The last of the Kodak CCDs for Leica. The M9 was also, but it was a tad different and updated. The biggest problem with the CCD sensors for Leica was/is the corrosion. The M8 and S2.S006 largely was saved from this. The M8's black issue is actually a plus, as the camera can be easily converted into an infrared camera because of it. But I digress,,, needless to say, I like this review. I also think anyone interested in the M8 should take a look at the full frame M9, the original (CCD) Monochrom or even the M10 to M10R. Leica in general is another level!

What a glorious, trailblazing camera, and what gorgeous tonality. Love the shots. Plus that Leica manual focus rangefinder shooting experience has to be just pure joy. From what I understand, Leica hot shoes will trigger Nikon-compatible flashes, probably not with TTL but definitely with manual flash and it sounds like some semi-auto modes work, too. (Just searched some old DPReview and L-Camera Forum posts to confirm, but also sort of speaking from experience with my Leica T). As long as it’s not the vintage flashes with high trigger voltage that can damage digital cams, it should work, AFAIK. Excited for some Fine, Fine Fuji Pix coming up!

The silver chrome M8 and the silver chrome M9-P are my daily cameras. Even for macro work with the Visoflex III and telephoto (135mm). Just love everything on these bodies. At the same time I had an Xpro3 and their 35/1.4 I sold them all and pushed my chips into an M240 because I wanted something Leica but also modern and I shot with that for a year. But I got frustrated with missing focus on moving targets (kids) and the heavy handed colors in RAW (muddy warm and magenta). In retrospect I should have kept the Xpro3/M8 combo. XP3 was modern fast AF for kid'tography and the M8 was great for contemplative shooting experience. And yeah, the sensor.

Loved the review. Oozing with passion. "shit gets boring when it's super clean" should be made into a t-shirt or sticker for M8 shooters!

Awesome review! The M8 does not have an MP version, but they have an M8.2 version... difference is just some upgraded saphire display glass, quieter shutter (but loses 8000 speed), slower flash sync... and some other stuff that's not really worth mentioning. Keep up the great work... would love to see more of your M8 captures.

I owned the exact same Leica M8 as yours - silver with the grip, except I had a Voigtlander 50mm F1.1. I sold it to buy an M9 - I love my M9, but the sensor is not as special as the M8. I was sorry that I sold it. But, I could not justify keeping both an M9 and an M8. Thanks for another great video.

I can luckily justify shooting my silver chrome M8 side by side with the silver chrome M9-P and I must say that the files out of the M8 still outperform those of the M9 in terms of overall ease of edit. Sure, you can almost get the same results out of a M9 but the DNGs of the M8 are much more pleasing to the eye out of the box.

Sony 14mp CCD DSLRs with video in some of their later cameras were quite incredible - especially with the native Zeiss glass. The Canon APSH pro dslrs that the press used were amazing also. Even the old 400D had a great sensor (basically a cropped down 5D classic). Nikon D700 and D4 I always thought were actually a CCD sensor although never officially confirmed.

Thank you for the recommendation! I just picked up a Sony a350 thanks to you.

Nikon designed the D700 sensor in house. I believe 12/20mp is the sweet spot for digital cameras.

I already had a bunch of Sandisk Extreme Pro 32GB SD cards when I got my M8. Used them in the M8 and never had any problems.

Seem to recall that that add-on IR block filter created another problem: reflections, especially in darker situations (with lights and such).
@OneMonthTwoCameras2 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I haven't noticed that occurring in my shooting experience.

Kodak Color Science over decades was awesome, that's why i still like my Olympus FT E-1 still much. (5 MP Sensor) Images are Film-esque, the same is when shooting with the old Fujifilm X-Series....

curious what you have to say about the M8 in 2024? Still a good choice? Great video 👍🏼

It depends. Classics will always be worth it if you want to own and use a classic.

I’ve been thinking so much about the Leica M8’s recently, and now watching this? You are killing me 🤣 It was a lot cheaper when you sold me on the XZ-1, haha!

What a great video. I myself have an upgrade M8 (M8u) which has the same shutter as the m8.2. Regarding high ISO, I think when shooting in black & white, high ISO gives a very film-like quality. Specially in daylight, my god I have taken some beautiful photos at ISO 1250 and 2500 when the settings with the light is good. Of course, when it is dark, the noise is not so nice. Overall a amazing camera. I have owned mine now since beginning of april this year, and I could never ever choose another brand except Leica. I have managed to score a great lens, Summarit 35mm 2.5mm and it is really the most perfect match. Would like to try the Summarit 75mm as well to get super close to my objects. Many thanks for this great video, and Hi from Sweden!

Nice overview. You got me to value my m8 even more. I was on the brink of selling it and now with the aspects you are liftning here i just can’t. You mention that you wish that you could see the shutter speed. I usually shoot in aperture priority mode. In aperture priority mode you can see the shutter speed in your viewfinder.

I thoroughly enjoyed this review or should I say love confession 😆 as this is exactly how I feel about my M8, there's something magical about this sensor. The only thing I would add is the capability to shoot in (not so) discreet mode, but at least it allows the user to break that loudish (compared to film Leicas) shutter 'clonk' in 2 parts so he can be less obtrusive, cheers.

are you reading my mind?? I have been working my way up the vintage CCD and early CMOS route myself trying to avoid buying an m8 (or worse, m9 (can’t really afford now)) and lolllllll you talked me into an m8, thank you. i’m sure i will be glad for it (after the money’s been forgotten).

Like a inmate and Fuji S5 for the two most filmic cameras ever made the S5 has two different sized photo diodes at each site allowing it to represent how film grains work

...the M8 is by far my sharpest one- like the old Kodachrome 64 film- but take care to shoot over 320 - (I'm still working with Fuji and newer Leica for newspaper and magazines)

I loved this camera as soon as I took it out of the box…it was amazing to hold, even better to shoot. And “very capable of taking a hit”? Yep it is! I accidentally dropped mine from 1 meter on a concrete-paved road, where it bounced hard a couple times. I watched horrified as the scene unfolded, thinking I had just lost my camera. I picked it up and there wasn’t even a scratch, not to mention a dent. This thing is made of unobtanium ;) On it the M8 had the Summicron-c 40mm f/2 (another legend, my all time favorite), and even that one come out unscathed. This (along my slightly-corroded-sensor M9 I bought after the M8 because it was a screaming deal) will be the cameras they will have pry from my dead cold hands. Saluti dal sud dell'Italia!

Great video! The M8 really reminds me of my old M6, but I too have since moved on from film, and my camera of choice bar my Olympus is the Ricoh GRD4 which also contains a 10.1mp CCD. A lot is down to quality of light and I imagine in the States it’s different to here in the United Kingdom which can be very dull light-wise. But the GRD is capable of very sweet results. I’d love to try it out in somewhere a little more continental. Have you tried one?

You can fix the horizontal rangefinder alignment yourself with a 2mm Allen Key. It’s located on the focus wheel of the mechanism that the lens moves in the body. I’ve had to do this and it was super simple to do but just took several attempts to get right as to check it’s best to look at the sample images on a computer and not the LCD. Also Leica will clean the sensor for you for free twice a year - this is true of any digital M. It takes 32Gb cards. I use a Sandisk Ultra 32 in mine and it’s never let me down. I’m finding it difficult to get third party UV/IR Cut filters in the UK unfortunately as I want a 39 and 43mm to try this out on.
