I really appreciate your doing this. Woul very much appreciate you doing a similar test working on stitching two 1.2mm-1.8mm glued together. A more practical application.

My take? All the results are great, no matter the iron or thread. Anyone would be proud to achieve that level of quality. And the good news is they can! Buy decent tools and thread, learn the proper technique and then practice. I would have liked to see the reverse side for comparison. Some irons tend to provide a better look on the backside, but it can also be impacted by either casting or not casting. Casting is not always a good thing, but in the right circumstances can help improve the aesthetics of the stitching.

Buyers should keep in mind that KS, Crimson Hides, make French-style irons like Vergez Blanchard, not just diamond bladed irons. I don't think most eyes could see the difference between Vergez Blanchard, which is a pure pricking iron, compared to KS Blades, Crimson Hides, Kevin Lee, or the Sinabroks irons. The biggest issue is how wide, how thick do the individual blades get as you move up toward usable depth? That is why you can NOT use Vergez as a stitching iron, but you can use the other 3 I mentioned, eliminating almost all awl use.

I actually preferred all of them to the Crimson Hides. Which is disappointing, as I was all set to buy a few of theirs next. But I think it’ll come down to more Vergez Blanchards or KS Blades for my next set. Of course I have not looked into the Kevin Lee irons yet.

@@flyflung It seems you are more inclined to the "old school" pricking irons rather than the French style irons that can be used as stitching irons. If so that is fine. One thing that should be considered is how thick is the leather. If you are doing wallets, he used the Vergez irons as stitching irons. Secondly is a choice of thread thickness. The thread used on the Crimson Hides irons was totally not appropriate. Lastly, the stitching should have been taped down before comparison. But I think one should not lead the rookies astray since there is a huge difference. I would not use KS Blades as a stitching iron because of the viable cutting depth. Vergez Blanchards has a viable cutting depth of 1.5mm; KS Blades has a viable cutting depth of 4mm according to Nigel Armitage; Kevin Lee 7mm; Sinabroks 8mm; Crimson Hides 9mm. Sinabroks is basically the same idea as KS Blades, and has thinner teeth and better cutting depth. It seems KS Blades might better be used as a pricking iron, or the size of the hole doesn't matter to you. I have used neither KS Blades or Sinabroks. I can only go by facts no opinion. And considering measurements meticulously taken by Nigel Armitage, exercised in a very scientific manner, I have to adjust my thinking between KS blades and Sinabroks. I do think there is some advantage to the tooth replacement issue of the KS and Sinabrok irons.

@@mountainlight9411 Thank you, but I did make one mistake that I corrected about Vergez Blanchard. For me the 3 most viable brands for "stitching irons" are: Crimson Irons, Sinabroks, and Kevin Lee. For reviews see www.armitageleather.com/ Go to the bottom of the page for "PRICKING IRON REVIEWS" and "EDGE BEVELER REVIEWS"

Thanks for sharing. I prefer Crimson Hides because the direction of the seams seems more straight , and a straight line gives me a correct mental image of an handmade seam. The slightly diagonal lines seem to me made with a sewing machine

Today I got my KS-Blade and previously I had Vergez Blanchard Crimson Hides(french and Japanese) Kyoshinelle bought decades ago when I made my own stuff, also have 4Z(two sets), Since Leather 2 sets and another Chinese high quality(150$ for a pair), 3-4 sets cheap Chinese. all they work well and only need accurate hands to punch the holes. I'm not satisfied until I tested the best in the market. Maybe keep 3 sets for the future, rest of them are resold as I did in the past.

Kyoshin Elle are not thought for this use. Are more to mark the holes amd make them with am awl. I used this brand and other similar for years! Are really good to me as beginner. I bought now the KS only because I wanted to save time to make the holes.

Can you do a video on Sinabrok VS KS blade if you have them? I’ve been doing a lot of research, and the two brands are know as the top contender these days. I want to buy a few sets in different sizes and shapes, but they’re pretty expensive. And you cannot return them either. But as I step up my game, I’m learning that good pro quality pricking irons are a must. If possible I want to keep the brand names on my pricking irons consistent, as I want to keep my stitchings consistent on all of my projects. I appreciate your in-depth videos.

PRICKING IRON 1. Vergez Blanchard- expensive(many use as just light marking, then use Awl to stitch 2. Ks Blade- the similar price of Vergez or little less. fine teeth and many liked 3. Crimson Hides- Most popular and robust teeth(Japanese style- less angle, but easy for new craftsmen) and French-style- need some experience to get a good stitch and you have to know what thickness thread you will use 4. Kyoshinelle- 20$ costs 5 teeth and maybe 6-7 dollars for the 2 teeth. Easy to work and less angle and called Japanese Iron. I have one and broken on the tooth. I have both crimsons and others. Buying more and then resell which is not good for me(lose some money, but have my fav. one).

The Vergez Blanchard stitching would look better if you used it the way it’s meant to be used, with an awl in the traditional style.

I choose a pricking iron, I always wanted to see the stitching of them. Now I collected some pricking irons, so I would like to show the stitching to people who are interested in the tools. The title is not "comparing tools and technic", the title is "comparing the stitching of the tools" but thank you for your opinion. have a good day.
