In this video, three different weeping red lace leaf Japanese maples are compared:
1. Tamukeyama: Known for its later leafing, which helps it avoid late frosts. It has a good color retention throughout the season, offering a maroon hue and bright fall colors. It grows to about 6 feet tall and wide in 10 years and is heat tolerant, making it suitable for various conditions.
2. Crimson Queen: This cultivar has a lower, spreading habit and is ideal for shaded locations, thriving in morning sun and afternoon shade. It grows to about 3-4 feet tall and 5-6 feet wide in 10 years. It’s known for its vivid crimson fall color and is good for smaller gardens or container planting.
3. Inaba Shidare: Distinguished by its cascading growth, this maple is highly heat tolerant and has unique lavender-purple spring colors that can turn red-maroon. It grows about 5.5 feet tall and 9 feet wide and is noted for its impressive fall color and traditional weeping form.
The video emphasizes that while all three are excellent choices, the best one for your garden will depend on specific conditions and preferences.

I have a serpentine trained tamukeyama. I didn’t know one from the other when I purchased and planted it. I am in coastal NC and have been told Japanese maples are not suited to our conditions. But I love pushing boundaries so decided to give it a try. Two years in and all is well.

According to the Japanese Maple book fourth edition by J D Vertrees and Peter Gregory, Inaba means “leaf like a rice plant”. The Japanese observed that in the rain this plant looked liked ine (a rice plant), an old form that turned crimson in the fall. Love your videos. I placed my first Mr Maple order a couple weeks ago. It arrived very well packed and quickly. I ordered ‘Shaina’. She looks lovely in her new home.

Hi! Love your channel and all the knowledge you share. I have a Q? I love the weeping laceleafs red or purple, no greens. I live in zone 9b texas gulf coast. (Galveston County) high humidity and heat index upto triple digits. Would you recommend a small laceleaf for my area and how would I care for it? Pot or in ground. I would greatly appreciate your recommendation. Thank you in advance.
