Ruanda was really horrible considering it lasted for days, not years, and yet it was enough to kill almost a million people. Also the Mexican Drug War despite not being considered formally a civil war, it was an internal armed conflict that left about 300 thousand deaths. I was expecting to see it here.

I think almost every transition war between dynasties in China should be on the list. My understanding is when the population of ancient Chinese dynasties reaches 50 million or above (except Qing Dynasty), the conflict between population and food becomes more severe, as limited arable land cannot feed them all. Also, follow the time goes by, more and more lands are owned by landlords. They are mostly officials or prestigious squires, and they usually have a lot of tax benefits or even tax/labour exemptions. Therefore, the central government receives less and less income and then has to force tenant farmers, labours, and merchants to pay more tax, making them harder to live. Eventually, when bad weather or even disaster comes, famine comes as well, people from the disaster area flee to another area, making another area becomes scarcity of food as well. Then the snowball effect starts and the dynasty starts to collapse. In the end, when the new dynasty establishes, the estimation of the population usually to be around 10 million.
@kshitizsrivastava9429
@kshitizsrivastava9429 2 жыл бұрын
But how do they 50 million in first place.. Like you said that there was scarcity of food and land... Then how did 50 million people even survived... And dont forget about deaths due to diseases which is nothing to us right now.. It is like they reproduce constantly whenever they have time...
@jiyan4800
@jiyan4800 2 жыл бұрын
@@kshitizsrivastava9429 First, ancient China had large amounts of arable land to feed millions of people. (eg, As early as 2 C.E. during the Han dynasty, China had a population of some 60 million) Then, as you said, the population infinitely grew but land and agricultural production were limited. At a level, all arable lands were being planted but the population still grew. From that time, the average amount of daily food per person started to decrease. Also, the government received fewer and fewer taxes due to the reason I mentioned above, so the government increased tax rates for farmers, labours, and merchants. making the problem more severe. The transition period between each dynasty can last 50 years or longer. it all started with the storage of food due to natural disasters. Then rebellions, and then the entire country was in chaos. During the dynasty transition period, it might have included hundreds of wars that at least made thousands of casualties. Those untreated corpses can cause a plague. Also, Insurgents without military discipline always massacre or rob civilians, and destroy infrastructures and farmlands. I think deaths caused by the above issues should also be considered as war casualties. You can also check this link for the population estimate of each dynasty. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Population_history_of_China). I am sure these estimates are not accurate because each ancient dynasty had a few groups of people not calculated into the population. (like monks and nuns, Taoist priests, slaves and servants)

80 years war worldwide? I think putting it as the Low Countries would work better, no? (Or the dutch republic, or current BeNeLux, or at least western europe?) also historiographically this is a bit of a debate because it wasn’t as much a war of two countries against each other as it was a civil war and a revolt, which is why many Dutch historians nowadays prefer to call it the Dutch War of Independence (“De Opstand”) instead of the Eighty Years War! Love this video though, it’s well made! Really makes you realise the scale of some of these wars you’ve learned about. I for example never realised how many lives the Reconquista of the Iberian peninsula took. Really puts things into perspective.

It's called "worldwide" because the Dutch attacked Portugal (then in a personal union with Spain) in various locations, like Brazil, Formosa (now Taiwan), Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), and the Moluccas. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch%E2%80%93Portuguese_War; this is considered an extension of the Eighty Years War. For High Middle Ages we have mainly the Crusades (4:19) which it's one of the reasons why Middle Ages are considered so dark in comparison to the following enlightened periods. And the Hundred Years War for (very) Late Middle Ages. Overall not so much compared to what came after (if you consider that in 20th century we had 2 almost 3 world wars in 100 years). Just remember this when someone uses the expression "returning to the Middle Ages" or, worse, to the "Dark Ages".

An interesting video would be percentage of people killed compared to the world population at the time. That truly would show the devastation in my opinion

Now you have to adjust these numbers to the ammount of people that were alive during that time. For example during three kingdoms war the world population was only about 250 million

How inflated are the numbers, the Aztec empire did not even exceed 10 million inhabitants and you tell me that all of Mexico died with that war? Because if so, you are not correct at all, besides, how can 400 Spaniards kill so much population? 5:33

@@yosueth Sure, but it wouldn't be inaccurate to say that 4/5 of the Aztec population would die in the war. I don't know what the number of Aztecs there were, but I know the war was absolutely brutal and it was as bad or even worse than events such as The Black Death.

i mean no wonder most of the deadliest ones are in China, China always had more people than most of the world, so it isn't surprising to see them, but of course WW2 was the deadliest, one of the main reasons being: ITS A WORLD WAR, also people had deadlier weapons then and of course the population up until then was very big

One atomic bomb killed more people than a complete war in the medieval time. And: In China a human live is nothing worth. Mao is a much more Mass-Killer than everyone else. And of course its a big difference to kill 25 enemys with a gun or by sword
